Deb Rogers' novel Florida Woman was published in July 2022 by Hanover Square Press, an imprint of HarperCollins. Called "a bewitching debut" by Publisher's Weekly, Florida Woman was featured as an Indie Next Pick by the American Booksellers Association. Deb has lived and traveled throughout Florida working as an educator, policymaker and victim advocate, and she now lives on the Atlantic side of the state in the very haunted and very beautiful town of St. Augustine. While she'd love to stumble upon hidden pirate treasure along the coast someday, her daily obsessions tend to be thriller and heist movies, word puzzles, licorice, Florida manatees, and, of course, monkeys. Follow her on Twitter and Instagram at @debontherocks, or learn more on her website debrogersauthor.com. Interviewer Kay Huggins is a creative, the owner of Aphelion Editing and Consulting, and the host of the Raindrop Corner Podcast. As a longtime resident of Jacksonville, Florida, they have sought to support local artistry, foster thought-provoking content, and aid in human rights advocacy. Kay is an English major with a concentration in psychology. For over a decade, their life has been dazzled with project management, technology industries, logistics, editing, writing, and production. Through the intersectionality of Kay's craft, they aim to champion the community by providing a platform to marginalized groups. Currently, Kay is writing their debut novel and enjoying leisure moments with their fur babies. READ Jamie is a Florida Woman. She grew up on the beach, thrives in humidity, has weathered more hurricanes than she can count, and now, after going viral for an outrageous crime she never meant to commit in the first place, she has the requisite headline to her name. But when the chance comes for her to escape viral infamy and imminent jail time by taking a community service placement at Atlas, a shelter for rescued monkeys, it seems like just the fresh start Jamie needs to finally get her life back on track — until it's not. Something sinister stirs in the palmetto woods surrounding her cabin, and secrets lurk among the three beguiling women who run the shelter and affectionately take Jamie under their wing for the summer.

Irrevocably tied to the Carolinas, Deadheading and Other Stories tells tales of the woebegone, their obsessions with decay, and the haunting ache of the region itself—the land of the dwindling pines, the isolation inherent in the mountains and foothills, and the loneliness of boomtowns. Predominantly working-class women challenge the status quo by rejecting any lingering expectations or romantic notions of Southern femininity. Small businesses are failing. Factories are closing. Money is tight. The threat of violence lingers for women and girls. Through their collective grief, heartache, and unsettling circumstances, many of these characters become feral and hell-bent on survival. Beth Gilstrap's prose teems with wildness and lyricism, showing the Southern gothic tradition of storytelling is alive and feverishly unwell in the twenty-first century.   Gilstrap is in conversation with author Steph Post. _______________________________________________   Produced by Maddie Gobbo, Lance Morgan, Natalie Freeman, & Michael Kowaleski. Theme: "I Love All My Friends," an unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. Visit https://www.skylightbooks.com/event for future offerings from the Skylight Books Events team.

On today’s episode, Steph Post, author of Holding Smoke, returns to NovelClass to discuss Kristin Valdez Quade’s debut novel The Five Wounds. The Five Wounds was published on March 30, 2021 by W. W. Norton & Company and is author Kristin Valdez Quade’s debut novel. Set in Las Penas, New Mexico in the late 2000s, The Five Wounds tells the story of Amadeo Padilla and his family. Amadeo, 33, unemployed, and living with his mother, has been recently inducted into a secret Catholic society within the community.  Amadeo is chosen by his great-uncle, the leader of the group, to reenact the passion of Christ during the community’s Good Friday procession. As Amadeo hopes the society and his new role will be a catalyst for a new lease on life, Angel, Amadeo’s16-year-old pregnant daughter, arrives at his door after fleeing from her mother’s home. Over the course of the next year, Amadeo, his daughter, and his mother will face a myriad of challenges and make countless sacrifices to keep their family and their faith intact. In a remarkable debut, Kirstin Valdez Quade crafts an incredible cast of characters who, despite their best efforts, continue sabotage their own lives. Set during a difficult period for many Americans, Quade’s narrative is a testament to the resilience of family and the America spirit. Today's episode is sponsored by Libro.fm.
