Eli Reed, a renowned photographer, is a very special guest to the show. Paris emphasizes his impressive career and noting a previous show they did together featuring a photo of Tyra Banks and John Singleton. Reed joins the show while in Los Angeles for the Milken conference, where he participated in a panel with other photographers. Sharing stories from his career, including photographing Tupac Shakur. He recalled meeting Tupac on the set of "Poetic Justice," asking him for a personal portrait, and taking the iconic photo that now hangs in the Smithsonian. Reed also talked about his early life in New Jersey, his move to Texas, and his teaching stint at the University of Texas, where he was invited to speak and subsequently offered a teaching position. Reed discusses his experience at Magnum Photos, the prestigious photo agency, and how his work in Central America gained attention, leading to his association with Magnum. He emphasized the importance of critique in his work and his desire to understand different perspectives through his photography. The conversation also touches on societal changes, representation in media, and the impact of Reed's work on the photography world. Reminiscing about his time at the San Francisco Examiner in the late 1970s and early 1980s, describing the vibrant and sometimes chaotic environment. He recalls meeting the legendary photographer Jim Marshall and shares a story about Marshall trying to sell his equipment after his wife left him. Reed mentions his transition from still photography to film, recounting a project he did on gangs in Detroit, which won an award for Best Short Documentary from the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. He also talks about a recent assignment in New Orleans for Human Rights Watch, photographing the impact of industrial pollution on African American communities. During this assignment, a colleague was shot at but fortunately not injured. His work on the film "The Five Heartbeats" where he directed a part involving black and white still images. He also shares an incident where he was hit on the head by another photographer in New York, highlighting the competitiveness and sometimes aggressive nature of the profession. Looking ahead, Reed is working on a new book and planning to make a feature film. He speaks fondly of his teaching experience in Austin and expresses his appreciation for Lauren, who helps him manage his extensive archives. Reed concludes by mentioning some upcoming projects he can't discuss in detail but promises more exciting work in the future. Is the Bible just another religious book-- Has it been changed-- Is God still speaking to us-- All these questions and more, will be looked at in this message.
Why do so many churches and Christians make such a big deal of the Bible? Isn't it just an out-dated, irrelevant piece of ancient literature? Shouldn't we keep it on the shelf and use more modern books to teach us how to live? These are the questions we'll explore today.--The PursueGOD Truth podcast is the “easy button” for making disciples – whether you're looking for resources to lead a family devotional, a small group at church, or a one-on-one mentoring relationship. Email us at podcast@pursueGOD.org.Donate Now --before we examine the Bible, let's start with some fun trivia about all those other books on the shelf…10 notable best-selling books of all time:The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss - 10.5 millionThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain - 20 millionThe Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - 29 millionTo Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - 40 millionThe Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle - 43 millionPurpose Driven Life by Rick Warren - 50 millionThe Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis - over 85 millionHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling - 120 millionA Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens - Over 200 million Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes - Over 500 millionTop three best-selling books of all time:The Quran - Estimated 800 million copies sold and distributed.Quotations from the Works of Mao Tse-tung - Over 900 million copies sold. The Bible - Estimated 5 billion copies sold and distributed. So, back to the question we'll unbox today:Q. Is the Bible Just Another Book?Think about how all of those other books were written: All of those other books were the product of one or more clever mindsThey all followed a similar process:Come up with the conceptCreate a storyline, characters, etc.Do some research if needed for accuracy Write and re-writeMy favorite book on the topic: “On Writing Well” by William Zinsser“Simplify, simplify.”“There's no minimum length for a sentence that's acceptable in the eyes of God.”“Writers must constantly ask: what am I trying to say? Surprisingly often they don't know.”"Ultimately the product any writer has to sell is not the subject being written about, but who he or she is."But this is what separates the Bible from every other book: it is not the product of one person's ideas or creativity. Nobody had to dream up the storyline or characters, and no one had to read “On Writing Well” to turn out the best chapters and verses. The Bible, Christians believe, is unique because it alone was inspired by God. Here's how Paul explained it to Timothy:2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT) All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.See Where Did We Get...

It's back-to-school time so let's talk about books and online courses. Let's get serious about what they can and cannot do. In this episode, I invite you to take an honest look at what you're doing (and not doing) to intentionally create your dream tech career. And ask yourself: Are those books and online courses REALLY helping? Because they are NOT the key to career success. In this episode, I talk about what that key is. Enjoy!
We were flying at an altitude of about 35,000 feet. I had just picked up a book and started reading. Then I noticed that the bearded youth beside me was reading along with me. He had read the Oriental mystics, the philosophers of the ancient Middle East, and even a few college texts, but he had never seen anything quite like the book I was reading. His interest in my book amused me, but I said nothing and kept reading. Finally, he could stand it no longer and said, "What is this book you are reading?" I replied, "It is a commentary on the last book of the New Testament--the Book of Revelation. It is almost 2,000 years old. In this book God tells us of the future and what is going to happen." It is like history pre-recorded.
In this episode, Jordan and Daniel dive into a topic that holds immense significance—the Bible. They explore what sets it apart from any other book, why it is considered sacred, and how understanding its unique qualities should challenge us to take action. Today, I will be continuing the discussion on why I have decided to take a break from writing books. As a content creator, I have a natural talent for producing a vast amount of material with relative ease. However, my focus has shifted towards helping individuals achieve real transformation in their lives. I have come to the realization that a book, though informative, is not enough to facilitate this process. It's like getting lost in the act of "information masturbation." It feels good, but it's not actually taking you anywhere. Don't get me wrong, books can be an excellent source of knowledge and inspiration, and I still enjoy reading them. The point is, if you're ready to make a big transformation in your life, you don't need a book to get started. So, let's skip the "masturbation of information" and get straight to the real work of transforming our lives. Show notes: [5:54]#4 My focus is on helping people get a transformation. [10:20]#5 While I acknowledge the importance of books, it's vital to recognize that a $15 book is not the ultimate source of transformation. [13:45]#6 Most thought leaders write books as lead magnets to attract individuals to their larger and more extensive programs. Today's class, I will be discussing why I have decided not to write another book for the foreseeable future. Before we dive in, let me start by saying that I am glad that I have written the books that I have. They have helped me reach a wider audience, and have opened up new opportunities for me. However, if I knew then what I know now, I probably wouldn't have written as many books simply because there are other investments that provide a much higher return. Tomorrow, in part four of this two-part series, I will be discussing why I will not be writing another book for a considerable amount of time into the future, with an asterisk, barring any godfather business deals. Tune in now! Show notes: [8:19]#1 I'm glad that I've written the books that I had. [11:03]#2 The impact that my books have had on building my audience. [14:40]#3 It is essential to always evaluate your return on investment when considering your ventures. Most books about prayer either assume that I don't want to pray or that I don't know how. Neither is really the case. My problem lies elsewhere. I don't like the way God treats me when I pray.

For Marcia Reynolds, coaching evolved as a highly effective learning tool, discovered through her work training leaders in the corporate world. She is now a world-renowned expert on coaching ranked #5 on Global Gurus' list of coaching thought-leaders, has delivered programs and coached leaders in 41 countries, and has written four coaching books. She also turned 20 in jail and credits her transformation, at least in part, to the women she did time with. From the rabbit hole of drug abuse to achieving multiple master's degrees, her first ‘tough coach' was her cellmate who taught her to get out there and make a difference in the world.Marcia witnessed the rise in coaching ‘as a thing' first hand.
