Disputes between landlords and renters typically end up in front of judge and can result in an eviction. Instead of going to court, some landlords and renters are turning towards mediation to find a solution that will keep tenants in their homes while making sure property owners get paid. By design, mediation is a neutral experience that's not about one party or the other. Both sides are able to get it all out there, say how they feel and what they need. "My name is Joel Carroll, the author of the recently published book, The Book of Joel; Cunning, Baffling and Powerful. I'm a recovering drug addict and gang member who, after nineteen years of Hell, was locked in a psych ward for homicidal ideation with suicidal tendencies. Death, paranormal activity, and self-will run wild had me baffled to my core. Doing dope, sleeping with prostitutes, and committing acts of violence were three of the many vices I turned to, all while being married with children. I was in the military and was discharged for using. I was a chef at the Ritz Carlton in Marana, Arizona but walked away after getting a DUI while drunk as well as high on Methamphetamine. I was kidnapped in Virginia and during a separate altercation had a stroke due to gang violence outside Washington DC. Steve Joiner is the Dean of the College of Leadership and Public Service and Managing Director of the Institute for Conflict Management at Lipscomb University. Steve serves as Professor of Conflict Management. At Lipscomb, he teaches or has taught courses in Organizational Conflict, Conflict Systems Design, Religious Conflict and Negotiation. Steve is a respected consultant and trainer leading interventions and seminars nationally and internationally, including Brazil, Germany, Guatemala, Australia, Kenya, Canada and South Korea. Scott's Story I empower individuals and families to move forward past the crisis and onto the road of recovery. As founder of Second Chance, I worked to break the cycle of substance abuse, unemployment, poverty, and homelessness for 25,000 at-risk teens and adults going through the incarceration system. Today, I lead the team at Confidential Recovery, an intensive outpatient substance abuse recovery program. But that's not why you want to work with me. You want to work with me because I have been there. I've been through the fire and come out on the other side. Thirty years ago I was on the edge. Struggling from addiction, considering suicide, and feeling like things were unraveling. I was at rock bottom. The day after trying to kill myself, I flew home and immediately entered treatment. I lived the embarrassment, fear, and helplessness surrounding addiction. And I have come out the other side whole. Today I get to live life on life's terms and I get to give back. I am now 35 years sober, working to empower others on their journey.
