Identifying the Graduate Program for the Career You Want – Special Series Becoming a Therapist: An interview with Eden Lathem In this new series, Curt and Katie interview graduate students and will follow them on their journey to becoming a therapist. Our final interview is with Eden Lathem, a second-year Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) student at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. Eden shares her path from working in prison education and with individuals with disabilities to finding her passion for systemic thinking and family therapy. She candidly discusses the challenges of grad school, balancing internships, and navigating financial constraints while exploring her future career aspirations. She also talks through how she did due diligence to find the “right” graduate program. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode, we meet Eden Lathem, an aspiring therapist We continue our new series on becoming a therapist, with Eden Lathem, who is a first career professional who has done a lot of due diligence and strategic thinking to plan her trajectory as a therapist and professional.   Eden's Background and Path to Therapy Eden shares how her experiences in prison education and working with individuals with disabilities shaped her desire to support families and underserved populations. Initially hesitant about becoming a therapist, Eden found her passion for MFT through her commitment to systemic thinking and helping others. She highlights the unique role of MFT in addressing the needs of families with disabled members, a demographic often overlooked. Grad School Expectations vs. Reality Eden discusses her experience in an in-person, cohort-style program that meets weekly. She was surprised by the program's emphasis on self-awareness and the “self of the therapist” work, which has become a significant focus. While expecting more hands-on training, she found the program leaned heavily on didactic learning with limited opportunities for shadowing and hands-on therapy practice. Balancing Dual Internships and Financial Challenges Eden balances two internships: a paid position at a family therapy center and an unpaid internship, navigating the complexities of these experiences. She shares the financial struggles of grad school, reflecting on the challenges of unpaid internships and the economic realities of the helping professions. Eden highlights the need for strategic financial planning and managing responsibilities while pursuing a meaningful career. Advice for Prospective Therapy Students Eden encourages prospective students to thoroughly research programs by talking to professors and alumni. She stresses the importance of aligning program values with personal goals and considering the broader implications of the chosen education. Her advice emphasizes due diligence in selecting a program that supports future career aspirations. Skull Rock Podcast is powered by Riverside.fm. Click HERE and start making great podcasts today! Episode #213 features a chat about the new book, How Does Disney Do That? with authors James Warda and Imagineer Theron Skees. For many of us, why is every third photo at home from a Disney Park and every fifth kitchen towel covered in those famous ears? And what lies behind not only children, but adults, crying as Bambi looks for his mother or upon seeing Cinderella's Castle for the first time? Most of all, how does Disney make us feel this way? And why are these questions so important, especially now? Because, in answering them, in hearing from those who evoke these feelings through a powerful mixture of “method and magic,” we learn not only why we love Disney but why, if Disney didn't exist, we would need to create it. We also learn more about ourselves and each other along the way. How Does Disney Do That?: How Disney Makes Us Feel and Why It Matters will answer these questions, and more, through heartfelt and hopeful stories from Disney fans, and those who create the experiences. In August, Lipscomb University quietly added an anti-LGBTQ+ marriage statement to their website, sparking outrage in the campus community. Dr. Dana Chamblee Carpenter is a former Lipscomb professor who resigned due to a change in “attitudes” last spring; Rachel Randolph is a Lipscomb alum who realized she was gay while enrolled at the university. They sit down with executive producer Whitney Pastorek to explain why they're pushing back. (Lipscomb did not respond to our requests for comment.) Thanks to Tecovas, our Western wear faves, for being our exclusive launch sponsor!  You can find Rachel's petition to change Lipscomb's anti-LGBTQ+ statement here. Early voting is open now! GRAMMY-winning producer, artist, and songwriter Charlie Peacock defies categorization. Paul chats with him about everything from his early days on the Norther California jazz scene, to writing hits for the Christian music world, to producing everyone from the Civil Wars to Switchfoot. PART ONE:Scott and Paul talk about aging, the Rolling Stones concert Scott just saw, the centrality of energetic drummers, and other fun stuff. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Charlie PeacockABOUT CHARLIE PEACOCKFrom jazz to pop to rock to country, gospel, and Americana, Charlie Peacock is a Grammy-winning producer, artist, and songwriter who defies categorization. In addition to his own wide-ranging work as a recording artist, he has written well-known songs such “Every Heartbeat,” which was a major pop hit for Amy Grant, and “In the Light,” which is best known for the version recorded by DC Talk. He's responsible for developing and producing the Grammy Award-winning duo The Civil Wars and the Modern Rock band Switchfoot, including their multi-platinum Top 40 pop hit “Dare You to Move.” Peacock launched his career as an artist on the Northern California jazz scene before recording his debut album, Lie Down in the Grass, which was released by A&M Records in the mid-1980s. After a stint with Island Records, he moved to Nashville to work as an artist and producer. His 1990 album, The Secret of Time, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rock/Contemporary Gospel Album. In that decade, he produced nearly 50 albums for other artists, and was named the Gospel Music Association's Producer of the Year for three consecutive years. The long list of artists he has produced includes Nicole Nordeman, David Crowder, Holly Williams, The Lone Bellow, Al Green, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He has produced a wide range of music for film and television, including the Mandy Moore film A Walk To Remember, Chris Cornell's "Misery Chain" from the soundtrack of Twelve Years a Slave, and "Hush," the title theme to the AMC drama Turn: Washington's Spies, featuring Joy Williams and Matt Berninger of The National. As an artist, he returned to jazz with the Love Press Ex-Curio album in 2005 before embracing vocal music once again with his 2012 album No Man's Land. In late 2015, Peacock was appointed the Director of Contemporary Music and Industry Outreach at Lipscomb University's College of Arts and Entertainment in Nashville. An author of several books, his forthcoming memoir will explore his musical life, while  his latest album as an artist, Every Kind of Uh-Oh, will be released at the end of August.
