Phil is joined by Jan Keck to explore innovative approaches to group facilitation, risk-taking, and designing impactful activities. Jan shares practical frameworks like the 'campfire method' and 'risk ramp' to help facilitators create safer, more engaging spaces that encourage authentic participation. The campfire analogy for reflection and learning Replacing traditional icebreakers with meaningful activities The concept of a 'risk ramp' to gradually increase participant comfort The importance of setting clear promises and expectations Strategies for effective time management in facilitation Pre-order the book here - https://www.jankeck.com/campfire-campaign/ Contact the podcast - podcast@high5adventure.org Support the podcast - verticalplaypen.org Little Green Straw Activity - Group Size: 8–30 participants Time: 10–15 minutes Materials: A small object (traditionally a green straw/pen, but any small item works) Setup: Have the group stand or sit in a circle. One person (or the facilitator) secretly "hides" the pen somewhere on or near themselves while others close their eyes or look away. Challenge: Participants open their eyes and try to find the "hidden" pen—without anyone moving or obviously revealing it. Once someone spots it, they do not announce it. Instead, they quietly sit down (or give a subtle signal) indicating they've found it. The round ends when most of the group has found the object. Progression: Run multiple rounds, increasing difficulty: Start with moderately hidden Move to more obvious-but-overlooked placements Final round: place the pen in plain sight (e.g., behind the facilitator's ear, on their shoulder, or clipped visibly) This usually produces the "aha" moment—participants realize they were overthinking or searching too hard. Debrief Questions: What strategies did you use to find the pen? When did you feel most/least successful? What made the final round difficult, even though it was more visible? How did your assumptions affect what you were looking for? Where do we miss "obvious" things in real work or life?

Send Leanne a messageJan Keck is back on First Time Facilitator for a pop-up episode, and this one is for anyone who wants to create connection without making people cringe. Jan first appeared on the podcast in Episode 156, and in this conversation he shares the thinking behind his new book, The Campfire Method, plus what he's learned from three years of writing, testing, and refining his ideas in public. We talk about why Jan moved away from the old “icebreakers” framing, and how his work evolved into a bigger idea: creating the conditions that help people feel safe enough to connect, contribute, and take risks. He shares how small moments before a session even starts can shape the whole experience, from pre-event communication to what people see when they first enter the room. In this episode, Jan shares: why the best facilitators build a risk ramp, not a risk jump how to make space for quiet participants without putting them on the spot the five conditions that help “melt the ice”, including the importance of choice what happened when he asked 350 TEDx attendees to create secret handshakes with strangers how writing his book in public, with weekly community feedback, helped him stay consistent for three years why he now prefers facilitator promises over group agreements or rules If you work with groups, workshops, retreats, learning experiences, or team sessions, there's a lot in here for you.About Jan Keck Jan Keck is a facilitation trainer, TEDx speaker, and author of The Campfire Method. We rush through our lives, often unaware that a higher state of being is available to us—a state of peace, calm, and deep connection with all life. Dr. Keck will explore the faith of God, the difference between faith and belief, and the hiddenness of God. Through all the mistakes and missteps of religion—our attempts to grasp God—we ultimately learn to let God grasp us.
This week, Dr. Keck will unpack one of the most famous lines in scripture: “The love of money is the root of all evil.” The word radical comes from a root meaning “to get to the root of something,” so this line is literally radical. Luke 14 is the classic text used to describe the high cost of discipleship. It seems to say that if you truly want to follow Jesus, you must give up everything else. Sure, it sounds rousing to shout, “I'm ALL IN!”—but what does that really mean? And isn't it okay to dip a toe in the water first? Dr. Keck will suggest that Jesus would also welcome those who are just checking him out.

This weekend, Pastor Jim will hone in on BEAUTY as a key aspect of the faith. All beauty in our world harkens to the transcendent beauty of the divine. And to strive for a more just world is at the same time to strive for a more beautiful world. As a great theologian said “we must move people toward truth, goodness, and liberation through beauty. Frenetic and harried and labored activism won't shift people. We need to appeal to their dreams and hopes and sense of beauty.”
We discuss the Principles of Christian Entrepreneurship with Andreas Widmer.
