Today, our guest is Jon Rettinger. Jon is a regular face in the tech world as a commentator on CNBC and Fox Business and a contributing writer to Wireless Week. As President and Editorial Director of TechnoBuffalo, he brings consumer electronic news to over 21 million viewers per month. He ranked in the top 5% globally in social media influence and was one of OC Metro's top 40 under 40 for 2011. Today, Jon talks about his past experiences and aspects of his life where he made some erroneous actions, the journey that has molded him into someone in the content creator community, and how one could build a highly effective and efficient team. Content Creator Space [07:35] Content creators are divided into artists and business creators. For John, his reputation is crucial. You must have a sense of urgency in fulfilling deadlines and providing material to establish that reputation. Brands have traditionally sought to collaborate with creators who would deliver on schedule. Fantastic Working Space [10:44] Being in a good relationship with your coworkers is essential because things tend to fall apart when there is a lapse in communication. It allows for simultaneous brainstorming of ideas, but it also makes it simpler to pitch new ideas when the people around you are receptive and open to them. Irreplaceability [12:33] You should know you can be replaced. Non-compliance will result in dismissal, and your input can be burdensome or dilute your unique voice. Your work is vital, but far more significant persons are leading the way. Hiring Process [19:09] Hire only when necessary. You must decide if the employee can earn enough money to sustain their wage. Now is the moment to hire if you know what they will do and how it will assist your bottom line. It is not the moment to hire for your peace of mind or display your hiring skills by recruiting someone. Widen your Circles [26:49] It is sometimes perceived as lonesome to be a content creator, especially if you do it yourself. But keep in mind that expanding your circle of friends through acquaintances is not only a game changer in that sector, but it will also provide you with support from people who are specialists in their respective fields. Mentor [36:56] John got a sincere and polite offer from John Morrison, now of DLD, to film his studios for a while and see how they worked, their creative processes, when he was an old techno bull. For John, that line of action re-ignited a lot of things. He is continually working to create a work environment where he feels fully integrated. We feature ethical hacker Dr. Timothy Summers, President of Summers & Company, a cyber strategy and organizational design consulting firm, who discuses the recent DDoS attack on DynDNS, which resulted in the slowdown or loss of access to such large sites as Netflix and PayPal. According to Dr. Summers, this attack came from botnets that were assembled by hacking home devices that connect to the Internet, such as web cams, and he provided advice on how you can protect your gear so it resists such attacks. He also talked about what changes might come when Donald Trump becomes President of the United States. Will he attempt to reverse the spin-off of ICANN, the non-profit corporation that manages Internet names? What about net neutrality and other FCC actions? Dr. Summers also speculates about three potential cyber threats. You'll also hear from editor Sean Aune, director of operations for TechnoBuffalo, an online blog and gadget review site. He'll talk about Internet bandwidth caps, the hot tickets for holiday gear, the controversy over the MacBook Pro and its various new features. So did Apple make a mistake not to support 32GB of RAM? What about the Touch Bar, and can it become a key tool in boosting productivity, particularly from creatives? What about the impact of the price hikes for the new models? Sean will also discuss the latest gear from Microsoft, including the Surface Book and the Surface Studio all-in-one desktop. And does the current generation of 2-in-1 PC notebooks with touchscreens make sense from a usability standpoint?
Featured on this episode is columnist and podcaster Kirk McElhearn, also known as Macworld's "iTunes Guy." Gene and Kirk dissect the good, bad and ugly points in Apple's media presentation where the main focus was to introduce a new MacBook Pro line. But what about the tentpole feature of the refreshed notebooks, the Touch Bar. Does it offer enough advanced features, as a context sensitive OLED-based control strip, to justify price increase of between $300-$400? More to the point, does Kirk plan to buy one? And what about the missing hardware, such as the three-year-old Mac Pro? It's still available from Apple, but does it have a future? You'll also hear from tech editor Sean Aune, director of operations for TechnoBuffalo, an online blog and gadget review site. He starts the discussion with his observations about the new hardware from Microsoft, introduced the day before Apple's event, where costly Surface Books and the Studio all-in-one computer were introduced. Did Microsoft take the wrong approach to actually exceed Apple's prices on their new gear. Gene and Sean also talk about the MacBook Pro and the pricey new models with Touch Bar and Touch ID. The discussion moves to questions about the planned merger between AT&T and Time Warner. A match made in heaven — or that other place? And what about the DDoS attacks against DynDNS, which, for hours recently, nearly brought down a large portion of the Internet.
We present Josh Centers, Managing Editor for TidBITS, and author of "Take Control of Apple TV" and other titles. The topics include speculation about iPhone 7 sales in light of reports of heavy preorders and sellouts, particularly for the iPhone 7 Plus. As author of "iOS 10: A Take Control Crash Course," Josh details some of the best features of the new OS, and discusses the download glitch that, for an hour, gave Apple customers a defective version that bricked some devices until they could be restored, usually via iTunes. You'll also hear from tech editor Sean Aune, director of operations for TechnoBuffalo, an online blog and gadget review site. Gene begins the discussion with his tale of woe about a Brother HL-5450DN printer that keeps tripping the circuit breaker in his home office, and surprising solution from the manufacturer. Gene and Sean go back and forth about Apple's "courageous" decision to remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, the possible reasons and the impact to customers. Sean will also discuss an Apple poll of Mac notebook owners reportedly circulating in which they are asked whether they ever use the headphone jack. The discussion also focuses on Samsung's quality control problems with the Galaxy Note 7 that has been recalled due to episodes of the battery bursting into flames or exploding.
We present tech journalist Sean Aune, director of operations for TechnoBuffalo, an online blog and gadget review site. He'll focus mainly on what's expected from Apple during the September 7th media event in San Francisco. The predictions mainly cover an iPhone 7, but Sean will also discuss the possibilities for introducing an Apple Watch 2, and Apple's skirmish with the European Commission over a $14.5 billion tax bill. You'll also hear from security expert and ethical hacker Dr. Timothy Summers, President of Summers & Company, a cyber strategy and organizational design consulting firm, who will discuss the latest hacks impacting the Democratic National Committee and other Democratic facilities. Are the hackers strictly focusing on one political party? And what about those recent security fixes from Apple? The final half of the show will feature John Martellaro, Senior Editor, Analysis & Reviews for The Mac Observer. His bill of fare includes such topics as "Blood in the Macintosh Water," why "There Ain't No Such Thing as Free TV," "Is There Anything Apple Can't Do? That's Now a Problem," and how "Autonomous Vehicles Might Develop Superior Judgement." Gene wonders whether the day might come in the next few years where he will have to give up the keys to his car and surrender to a self-driving vehicle.
You'll also hear from Sean Aune, director of operations for TechnoBuffalo, an online blog and gadget review site, who will also talk at length about the lack of Mac updates. Is it about Intel's chips, new designs, the fall arrival of macOS Sierra? Or has Apple necome less interested in keeping the Mac up to date? Sean will also give positive reviews on his experiences with a pair of Chromebooks. He'll also talk about their growing presence in school systems in the U.S. You'll also hear advice on what to do if one of your accounts, bank, credit card or services, is hacked, as Sean recounts the occasion when someone from the UK hacked his Netflix account and was watching movies and TV shows day and night.
We focus almost entirely on Apple's WWDC, coming the week of June 13. The most significant predictions will be highlighted, including the possibility that the Mac operating system will be renamed "macOS" to conform to the style of the other operating systems, such as iOS. You'll also hear about the possibilities that a souped-up version of Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, will be launched along with its initial appearance on the Mac. What about updates for iOS, watch OS and tvOS? Is there room for Apple to introduce new hardware at what is usually a software-related event for developers? Note: We fully expect that some of this material may be outdated after the WWDC keynote, but it'll be a fascinating episode regardless due to all the fascinating background information. Our guests include columnist Jonny Evans, Computerworld's "Apple Holic," and Sean Aune, director of operations for TechnoBuffalo, an online blog and gadget review site. Jonny will also discuss the sudden departure of Tony Fadell, the "father" of the iPod and CEO of Google's Nest division, which builds intelligent thermostats and smoke detectors. Gene will express his skepticism about "Internet of Things" gear.
