This week, we welcome Dr. Michael Jerrett, an esteemed professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, to The Hamilton Review Podcast. It's been just over a month since the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. In the span of one day, thousands of people lost their homes, thousands were displaced indefinitely and the cities of Altadena and Pacific Palisades were burned to the ground. The toxins in the air are heavy and the question on everyone's mind is: "How does the air quality impact our health and how do we navigate through this challenging time to keep ourselves and our children safe?" Dr. Jerrett is an expert in his field and we are honored to have him on the show. Dr. Michael Jerrett is an internationally recognized expert in Geographic Information Science for Exposure Assessment and Spatial Epidemiology. He is a professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the Jonathan Fielding Chair in Climate Change and Public Health. Dr. Jerrett earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto (Canada). For the past 22 years, Dr. Jerrett has researched how to characterize population exposures to air pollution and built environmental variables, how to understand the social distribution of these exposures among different groups (e.g., poor vs. wealthy), and how to assess the health effects from environmental exposures. Over the last decade, Dr. Jerrett has also studied the contribution of the built and natural environment to physical activity, obesity, and several health outcomes. In 2009, the United States National Academy of Science appointed Dr. Jerrett to the Committee on “Future of Human and Environmental Exposure Science in the 21st Century.” The committee recently concluded its task with the publication of a report entitled "Exposure Science in the 21st Century: A Vision and a Strategy." In 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency appointed Dr. Jerrett to the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Sub-Committee for Nitrogen Oxides. She holds a Ph.D. and an MA in Personality and Social Psychology from the University of California, Davis, and a BA in Psychology from Grove City College.  Dr. Sarah Schnitker studies virtue and character development in adolescents and emerging adults, with a focus on the role of spirituality and religion in virtue formation. She specializes in the study of patience, self-control, gratitude, generosity, and thrift.  Schnitker has published more than 75 peer-review articles and edited chapters, and she has procured more than $10 million in funding as a principal investigator on multiple research grants. Schnitker is an Associate Editor for Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, an Editorial Board member for the Journal of Research in Personality, and a co-editor of the forthcoming Handbook of Positive Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality. She is a dedicated mentor, having served as dissertation advisor for more than 20 doctoral students, whom she helps to cultivate intellectual virtues alongside scientific competencies. This week, we are honored to welcome renowned classical music announcer, Rich Capparela to The Hamilton Review! Without hesitation he replied, "A classical music radio announcer!" Today Rich is one of the best-known classical music radio personalities in the United States. He joined Los Angeles classical radio station KUSC-FM in 1980 as the morning host. He's also known for his airwork at Southern California classical radio stations KMZT-FM and KFAC-FM. Nowadays he can be heard once again on KUSC-FM. His recording company, Cardiff Studios, produces commercials and programming for U.S. arts organizations, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony. He's appeared as narrator at Carnegie Hall in music by Benjamin Britten and has performed in Southern California with the Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart, narrating The Night Before Christmas. In 2009 he began an association with the Metropolitan Opera when he started hosting the Met's prestigious Western Region Finals competition. Since 1995 Capparela has hosted live radio broadcast concerts by the Pacific Symphony. In December of 2001 as part of Los Angeles Music Week, Capparela was honored in chamber by the Los Angeles City Council for his contributions to the city's music community. In 2002 Capparela provided program notes for the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's Grammy nominated album LAGQ: Latin. Rich continued his association with the Grammys in February of 2004 when he presented the year's classical Grammys in Los Angeles. In January 2010 Capparela hosted the Grammy Salute to Classical Music honoring Placido Domingo. He is active as a lead singer and guitarist with a three-piece cover rock band, Otherwise Normal. Previously, I was an Associate Professor of philosophy at the University of South Carolina, where I was also a Peter and Bonnie McCausland faculty fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am also a faculty fellow at the Institute for Human Ecology at the Catholic University of America, and a Newbigin Interfaith Fellow with The Carver Project. Prior to coming to the University of South Carolina, I was a Collegiate Assistant Professor the Humanities at the University of Chicago, where I was also a member of the Society for the Liberal Arts. I earned my Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, where I studied under John McDowell and Michael Thompson, and my B.A. in Philosophy and Medieval Studies (with a Classics minor) at Indiana University-Bloomington. My academic research is primarily in moral psychology and virtue. I've co-edited a volume titled Self-Transcendence and Virtue with my former colleague Candace Vogler, and I am finishing up a volume titled Practical Truth with my husband and colleague, Christopher Frey. A third volume, titled Practical Wisdom, is under contract with Oxford University Press. In 2015, I was awarded a multi-million dollar grant from the John Templeton Foundation, titled “Virtue, Happiness, and the Meaning of Life.” I frequently write more popular essays and book reviews in places like Breaking Ground, First Things, Image, and The Point. I felt truly happy and blessed having twins, but I also felt extremely left out. Not only was I trying to navigate a twin pregnancy and what it was like to have two babies, but I also was left feeling very alone in the #boymom and #girlmom era. Out of these growing pains formed the idea for Boy Girl Mom (BGM.) I loved that “boy girl mom dot com” rhymed - no joke, I was sitting on the couch feeding my babies when they were about 6 months old and the idea just came to me. I checked to see if anyone had the website and some short minutes later, the domain BoyGirlMom.com was mine. Of course it took me a year to do something with it, but I saw I need for this kind of content and I'm committed to bringing it to you. I want to create a community where I can share tips and thoughts from my parenting journey. I plan on sharing real time lessons I'm learning, products I'm loving, time-hack tips and more. There are also some tricks I have up my sleeve that I can't announce yet (!!!) This week we welcome pediatric infectious disease specialist, Dr. Santhosh Nadipuram to The Hamilton Review Podcast! Why do parents feel hesitant about giving their children vaccines in the modern era, especially post pandemic? Medical professionals like Dr. Nadipuram want to help parents understand why vaccinations are important for their children and all the good that it does to help save children's lives. Enjoy this valuable conversation! Santhosh Nadipuram, MD, is a pediatric infectious diseases specialist and a physician-scientist. After completing his clinical fellowship in 2013, Nadipuram joined the lab of Peter J. Bradley, PhD, at UCLA, as a postdoctoral fellow. There, Nadipuram studied the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, focusing on the organism's secreted proteins and their roles in pathogenesis. He used genetic and protein purification techniques to identify and characterize several of these secreted proteins and discovered the role of these proteins in the parasite's survival and metabolism. Nadipuram joined Cedars-Sinai in 2018 and studies in the Arditi Lab with the goal of understanding the host response to Toxoplasma infection, specifically in immune-privileged compartments, such as the brain and the eye (chorioretinitis), using experimental mouse models of acute and chronic toxoplasmosis. Nadipuram received the Cedars-Sinai Clinical Scholars Award in July 2019. Dr. Nadipuram is an active clinician, caring for children in the hospital and outpatient clinic settings. In his spare time, Nadipuram co-publishes a podcast called Travel Medicine Podcast, discussing current medical topics as well as medical trivia and history. He also loves to rock climb with his two daughters. This week we are honored to welcome pediatrician Dr. Daniel Ganjian to The Hamilton Review Podcast! It is Passover week and Dr. Ganjian shares the history of Passover, the important lessons that we can apply to our life and so much more. Enjoy this special episode!   Daniel Ganjian M.D. was only six years old when he knew that he wanted to help people through science. He received a Bachelor's degree with highest honors from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. He completed training in Pediatrics with an emphasis in obesity at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in New York. The patient comments that show up most often for Dr. Ganjian are “very caring” and “listens”. He states that what he loves most about his practice is: “As a pediatrician, I love being able to decipher what is wrong with babies without them telling me. I am a detective and mind reader.” He makes certain that each patient leaves their office visit with a personalized prescription for good health. He has a special interest in fighting childhood obesity with his pediatric expertise and as a certified personal trainer. During every sick or well visit in his practice in Santa Monica, he evaluates patients for risk of obesity and diabetes. He also works with local schools speaking to teenagers to encourage them to take control of their physical health. Through Providence St. Joseph Health Southern California's wellness program, Dr. Ganjian has also been found in the aisles of local grocery stores educating shoppers on making healthier choices. Dr. Ganjian is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society; a designation given to just 10 percent of American physicians.
