How and When to Start Your Mac in Safe Mode

AppleVis Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2024

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to start your Mac in safe mode and explains in what situations this may be useful.Safe mode is a feature of macOS that disables login items, third-party drivers, and legacy system extensions at startup, useful if an incompatible item in one of these groups is causing a problem with your Mac. In addition, system caches are cleared, and a light check of your startup disk is performed when starting up in safe mode, which can identify possible issues that could be causing slower than expected performance. To start up in safe mode, start up the Mac while holding down the Power button, and interact with your startup disk (usually called Macintosh HD) in the grid that appears. Focus on the Continue button and route the mouse pointer to it by pressing VO-Command-F5, (or VO-Command-Globe-5 if you're using a Mac with a Touch Bar) hold down the Shift key, and click the mouse. Maintenance tasks are completed once the Mac has finished starting; restart your Mac to exit this mode.If you're trying to isolate a particular issue, attempt to reproduce it when in safe mode, and again once you leave this mode. If the issue no longer occurs, it was likely resolved by the maintenance tasks that macOS performed. If it doesn't occur when in safe mode but returns once you leave this mode, you may want to remove login items for third-party apps, update, remove, or reinstall any third-party drivers or legacy system extensions, or contact their developers for assistance. For more information, check out the Apple Support article “Use safe mode on your Mac”Note: VoiceOver only works in safe mode on Macs with Apple Silicon.

Much of that come from a switch from a 5nm production process to a 3nm one. Shrinking the chip's components allows them to work faster while generating less waste heat. 3 new M3 MacBook Pro models promise blazing speed The basic new MacBook Pro is a 14-inch model with the M3 chip. “Perfect for aspiring creatives, students, and entrepreneurs, it now starts at $1,599,” Apple said. Orders start Monday for all the new laptops, with shipping starting November 7, Apple said. The base M3 MacBook Pro at $1,599 ($1,499 for education). M3 Pro starts at $1,999 ($1,849 for education). M3 Max starts at $2,499 ($2,299 for education). Good riddance: 13-inch MacBook Pro discontinued Apple has discontinued the 13-inch MacBook Pro. It was the last MacBook in the company's lineup with a Touch Bar, a thin, customizable OLED strip at the top of the keyboard that replaced the usual row of function keys. M1 vs. M3 24-inch iMac comparison: What's changed? The biggest upgrade between the 2021 and 2023 24-inch iMac is the switch to the faster M3 chip. Apple claims its newest iMac delivers 2x faster performance. Fail: No USB-C update for Magic Mouse or Keyboard With the latest iPhones dropping the Lightning port in favor of USB-C, there was speculation (and hope) that Apple would release new versions of the Magic Mouse, Trackpad and Keyboard that also reject the Lightning port. Nope. How Apple's ‘Scary Fast' event was shot on iPhone [Updated] Apple shared a big surprise at the end of the scary fast event - the entire presentation was recorded using an iPhone. This is the first time Apple has used only one of its handsets to film an entire product launch event. Next-gen Apple Watch could offer limited blood pressure monitoring The 2024 edition of Apple Watch might finally include a feature that been a bit of a holy grail for the wearable: blood pressure monitoring. But a new report says the feature will be limited at first. The CultCast “Scary Fast” Predictions results Results from the prediction game we played on the show last week!

Maybe the 13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is like that weird blood orange flavor of San Pellegrino. I mean, someone has to be buying it otherwise they wouldn't keep making it? This week: bottle service, volcano bread, and generally accepted Kabletown accounting practices.

As we see, not just one but two new tech events this week, as Double Tap Canada returns to see what top tech gadgets Steven will be rushing out to buy next. Apple unveiled the next step in their M1 processor range with new MacBook Pros powered by the M1 Pro or M1 Pro Max CPUs. While there's no denying the incredible performance these chips offer, Shaun can't help feeling that when it comes to Apple re-introducing features such as the HDMI port, SD card reader, MagSafe charging and throwing away the Touch Bar, Apple were trying to correct some of the bad design decisions they have made in the past without actually admitting it. When it comes to the Google event, it was all about the Pixel 6 smartphone. With its new design, including a camera bar and in-screen fingerprint sensor and it's new Google in-house processor, it had some impressive features. The only problem was that it had all been leaked weeks before the event. Not only that, the leaks were from Google themselves. But was there anything here to tempt Steven away from the iPhone? All this plus your feedback, and why Shaun has fallen out with Amazon, only on Double Tap Canada.
