This is an encore presentation of a program originally aired in November of 2024. In this program, two novelists who've created visions of a future after significant climate change...talk about whether their fiction can help shape reality. Across his life, Richard Powers has been driven by an insatiable curiosity for humans and the world around us. This has led him from budding scientist to award-winning author, from Bangkok to the Netherlands, and has helped him win a Pulitzer Prize and a Macarthur Genius Grant. Powers is best known for his novels, including The Gold Bug Variations, named a Time Book of the Year, The Echo Maker, which received a National Book Award, and The Overstory, which received a Pulitzer Prize. Powers' fourteenth novel, Playground delves into the lives of artists, scientists, and teachers who choose to start seastedding - living on floating cities. On October 30, 2024, Richard Powers came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco for an onstage conversation with fellow novelist Kim Stanley Robinson, author of The Ministry for the Future.
It's back to the Potions classroom this week, as Ron pays the price for sloppy chopping and Draco milks his "injured arm." Snape's just trying his best to be happy, can you blame him for wanting to teach Ron a lesson? (Alice and Martha can). It's the most inanimate time of the year! Kicking off our new Anthology series - Movies Set at Christmas, That Aren't Christmas Movies - the boys revisit one of their all-time favourites: In Bruges (2008). Tommy's been watching Diddy: The Reckoning (it's… a lot), while DL's juggling The Wheel of Time: Book 2 andTrue Grit the OG, both highly recommended. Then it's time to check into Belgium's darkest fairy tale, where the snow is festive, but the mood is not.Timecodes:(00:00) Intro(06:50) What Have You Been Up To?(20:50) MAIN TOPIC: In Bruges (2013)(22:00) Stupid Plot Summary(25:40) Plot(29:30) One human, the rest are Muppets?(30:38) Acclaim vs Success(40:40) Characters(45:30) Direction(50:31) Four Oscar Nominees...(51:53) TRIVIA: Fake or Not Fake?(57:17) Miscellaneous Notes(59:19) Tones & Themes(1:03:35) 3 Best & 3 Worst(1:08:17) Critical Reception(1:08:26) Better or Worse than Aquaman (2018)?(1:09:17) Better or Worse than Aquaman (2018)?(1:10:01) Trivia True or False(1:14:09) Wrapping UpMain Topic:In Bruges is Martin McDonagh's pitch-black comedy about guilt, purgatory, and accidentally kicking a dwarf. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson shine as two hitmen laying low after a job gone wrong, while Ralph Fiennes turns up to scream about principles. It's foul-mouthed, funny, and somehow heartfelt, like Home Alone if Kevin had PTSD and a Browning. DL calls it a masterpiece. Tommy would probably fight someone over that opinion. Everyone agrees: this is not a Christmas movie—but it kind of is.Is In Bruges the best anti-Christmas Christmas movie ever made? Let us know at thepodcastassemble@gmail.com or hit us up on socials. Alice and Martha return to the fourth book as Harry prepares for the third task. A sweet moment from Ced, a not-so-sweet moment from Amos, and an almost non-existent moment from Mrs. Diggory take up the first half of the page, while Mrs. Weasley's reminiscing about the good ol' days of Ogg and Bill simply being cool take up the second half.
