Some people keep promises. Some people watch good movies. I did neither this week and let my intrusive thoughts convince me to watch Desert Monster (China, 2022) on Hi-Yah, a self-important monster flick that tries to deny it's B-movie bonnafides. Thankfully, Grady watched a good movie, Oddity (Ireland, 2024) on Shudder, a chilling blend of creepy house and Jewish folklore. We mourn the impromptu passing of Melissa, who was abducted and devoured by flying meatballs. Also, was Little Nicky a good movie or a great movie?

This is the 4th Article club with Brendan SueSee, Michael Davies, and Dave Robinson. The article they discussed was:Sarah Metz, Benjamin Zander & Ina Hunger (09 May 2024): The suffering of students in physical education. Unsettling experiences and situational conditions, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, DOI: 10.1080/17408989.2024.2352825 This paper captured a wide range of unsettling PE experiences by taking different perspectives of 677 physical education students. It used a social constructivist approach to address two questions: (1) What kind of experiences are interpreted as unsettling by students in PE? (2) Which situational conditions are associated with students' unsettling PE experiences? We speak about some of the challenges for PE teachers whilst at the same time considering that the issues raised are not uniquely ‘PE' problems but also problems of society.

Cosmological Readings of Contemporary Australian Literature: Unsettling the Anthropocene (Routledge, 2024) presents an innovative and imaginative reading of contemporary Australian literature in the context of unprecedented ecological crisis. The Australian continent has seen significant, rapid changes to its cultures and land-use from the impact of British colonial rule, yet there is a rich history of Indigenous land-ethics and cosmological thought. By using the age-old idea of 'cosmos'--the order of the world--to foreground ideas of a good order and chaos, reciprocity and more-than-human agency, this book interrogates the Anthropocene in Australia, focusing on notions of colonisation, farming, mining, bioethics, technology, environmental justice and sovereignty. It offers 'cosmological readings' of a diverse range of authors--Indigenous and non-Indigenous--as a challenge to the Anthropocene's decline-narrative. As a result, it reactivates 'cosmos' as an ethical vision and a transculturally important counter-concept to the Anthropocene. Kathrin Bartha-Mitchell argues that the arts can help us envision radical cosmologies of being in and with the planet, and to address the very real social and environmental problems of our era. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Ecocriticism, Environmental Humanities, and postcolonial, transcultural and Indigenous studies, with a primary focus on Australian, New Zealand, Oceanic and Pacific area studies. Most of us have probably experienced betrayal in some form or another during the course of our lives. Unlike the trauma of the death of a loved one or a natural disaster, betrayal feels extremely personal, which is why the healing process differs. Unfortunately, many people get stuck in the early stages of dealing with betrayal which often has a detrimental impact on their mental and physical health for many years, sometimes even a lifetime. In today's episode, I am joined by Dr. Debi Silber, founder of the Post Betrayal Transformation (PBT) Institute, whose own experiences of betrayal led her to discover 3 fundamental truths about betrayal and subsequently develop a 5 stage healing process that helps people who are struggling with post-betrayal syndrome radically alter their lives for the better.Debi is a holistic psychologist, health mindset and personal development expert, and the author of 3 books that explore different elements of betrayal. Whether you have recently been through a betrayal, or have been stuck in an unhealthy pattern of betrayal-related trauma for many years, this episode will show you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and as long as you have the will to heal, you will get there!  What you'll learn about in this episode:Introducing today's guest, holistic psychologist, personal development expert, and author Dr. Debi Silber.Debi shares an overview of the journey that led to her deep exploration of the psychology of betrayal. The trauma of betrayal. Why betrayal is different from other kinds of trauma (such as the death of a loved one or a natural disaster).Healing from betrayal; the 5 stages. Why so many people get stuck in Stage 3. Unsettling feelings that accompany growth. The two options that you have for rebuilding after a betrayal.Physical and mental symptoms that are commonly experienced after a betrayal. Why avoiding the healing process is likely to invite more betrayal into your life. Resources offered by the Post-Betrayal Institute.Books that Debi has written on the subject of betrayal.Who the Rebuild program at the Post-Betrayal Institute is aimed at.Transcript: HereAdditional Resources:Website: https://thepbtinstitute.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/debisilber/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/debisilber/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InspireEmpowerTransform YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClpiRrwk1mPjMYEEcn42BdgSharon Spano:Website: sharonspano.comFacebook: facebook.com/SharonSpanoPHDInstagram: instagram.com/drsharonspano/LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/sharonspano/Book: thetimemoneybook.comContact: sharon@sharonspano.comSubstack: substack.com/@drsharonThe Other Side of Potential Podcast: sharonspano.com/podcast/

Tune in and find out! Dude decapitates dad's daughter and is damned to don a demonic deity derby! Family drama, or family trauma? Chomping on Chekhov's Nuts! Unsettling scenes and surrealist style! What makes sounds “religious”? How are communities shaped by the things they hear, play, or listen to? This book foregrounds connections between sounds, bodies, and media in the private and public life of communities beyond the Global North, analyzing diverse configurations of the category of sound and various sonic ontologies to usher in a more inclusive global anthro-history of religious sounds. Religious Sounds Beyond the Global North (Amsterdam University Press, 2024) implements a “sonic turn” in the study of religion by engaging with a diversity of auditory, musical, and embodied practices. Dislodging the Global North as the main point of reference for studies on religious sound, in this volume editors Carola E. Lorea and Rosalind I. J. Hackett propose an acoustemology of the post-secular with an emphasis on Asia as method. Unsettling and expanding existing discussions on senses, media, and power, the editors present religious sounds as co-creating subjectivities and collectivities that coalesce around audible aesthetic formations, demonstrating that religious sounds are not only produced by certain religious traditions but also produce communities, shaping the self and sensitivity of those who participate. Carola E. Lorea is Assistant Professor of Rethinking Global Religion at the University of Tübingen. After India achieved independence from the British in 1947, there remained five scattered territories governed by the French imperial state. It was not until 1962 that France fully relinquished control. Once decolonization took hold across the subcontinent, Western-led ashrams and utopian communities remained in and around the former French territory of Pondicherry—most notably the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the Auroville experimental township, which continue to thrive and draw tourists today. Unsettling Utopia: The Making and Unmaking of French India (Columbia UP, 2021) presents a new account of the history of twentieth-century French India to show how colonial projects persisted beyond formal decolonization. Through the experience of the French territories, Jessica Namakkal recasts the relationships among colonization, settlement, postcolonial sovereignty, utopianism, and liberation, considering questions of borders, exile, violence, and citizenship from the margins. She demonstrates how state-sponsored decolonization—the bureaucratic process of transferring governance from an imperial state to a postcolonial state—rarely aligned with local desires. Namakkal examines the colonial histories of the Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville, arguing that their continued success shows how decolonization paradoxically opened new spaces of settlement, perpetuating imperial power. Challenging conventional markers of the boundaries of the colonial era as well as nationalist narratives, Unsettling Utopia sheds new light on the legacies of colonialism and offers bold thinking on what decolonization might yet mean. Jessica Namakkal is assistant professor of the practice in international comparative studies at Duke University. Samee Siddiqui is a PhD Candidate at the Department of History, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His dissertation explores discussions relating to religion, race, and empire between South Asian and Japanese figures in Tokyo from 1905 until 1945. Learn more about your ad choices. As Democrats sift through the wreckage left behind by Donald Trump's victory, it's become clear the party needs a major rebuilding effort with the working class. A new analysis from The New York Times finds unnervingly large swings among working class voters during the Trump era, including among nonwhites. We talked to veteran strategist James Carville, who offers a deceptively simple diagnosis: The Democratic Party is simply “in the dark” about how many Americans, especially working class, young, and nonwhite voters, are getting their information right now, and getting to the bottom of this conundrum is urgent. Carville also unveils a new project he's pursuing that he hopes will begin to solve the problem. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
