NOTE: To get the full effect of who Tom was 10 years ago when he first started the station, listen to this episode with Tom at the very beginning of RFB: May 15, 2015— Dr. Lisa psychoanalyzes RFB co-founder Tom Tenney Tom Tenney, the station co-founder, (along with Rob Pritchard), was my first guest patient when I began my show on May 15, 2015 and this session with Tom is exactly 10 years later, this time Tom is my 10th anniversary guest patient so we have plenty to reflect on as well as looking forward. Tom's entire life was Radio Free Brooklyn for many years in an obsessive way, which as a fake shrink is why he was able to make something so major into an organization that currently thrives with other capable people now leading the charge.Tom's life has evolved during the last 10 years: from Bushwick to Washington Heights, new psych meds, from being single for a very long time, to a successful thriving relationship with a wonderful woman who he lives with in a nice place and a job in retail while he continues to evolve his new ideas. Radio Free Brooklyn had changed so many lives over the last 10 years, but possibly no one more than Toms.Tom's show:Previous May 15, 2015— Dr. Lisa psychoanalyzes RFB co-founder Tom Tenney May 14, 2020— Tom Tenney, Radio Free Brooklyn's Executive Director return's to Dr. Lisa's couch in honor of RFB's 5th anniversary and it's on his birthday too! Tom Tenney joined me for an interesting show mostly about drugs!
Tom Tenney is the co-founder and executive director of Radio Free Brooklyn. He is also an actor, a community organizer, and a professor. In our episode, Tom discusses his bipolar diagnosis and how treatment has changed his life. He talks about growing up as kind of an outcast as a punk kid and a theater kid in conservative early '80s Catholic Massachusetts and how that shaped his worldview. Tom is gifted with candor and a level of honesty that makes him a great fit for Detoxicity.
Clifford Owens is late so Dr. Lisa continues her discussion with station direct Tom Tenney about the effect working on the show has had on her life and they exchange tips on local thrift stores. Clifford Owens comes in and we hear about his childhood and about his directly and indirectly sexual, intimate performance video and photography work. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifford_Owens
Radio Free Brooklyn co-founder and executive director Tom Tenney tries his first ever tabletop role playing game, and, well...it's best if you just listen to him play a 90s teen. The game, Mall Kids, was created by Matthew Gravelyn. In case you live in a part of the world with no news coverage, on October 3, 2020, Radio Free Brooklyn erected the “Wall of Lies,” a 50-foot by 10-foot outdoor mural with the 20,000+ lies told by Donald Trump (so far) while in office, documented and fact-checked by The Washington Post. The project was conceived and executed by RFB Executive Director Tom Tenney and Bushwick artist Phil Buehler. I know Tom Tenney (our RFB station Executive Director) and Phil Buehler (my very own husband) all too well, so when I did this session with them to unpack the process of them collaborating together and how they felt/managed the global coverage, positive results, and just the logistics of this extraordinary project, I was personally invested in finding out how they seemingly worked so well together. Turns out they really were a well-matched team that worked well without any of the friction I've experienced working with each of them separately. So the common denominator there is me-hmmm.
Dr. Lisa delves into Tom's childhood and found out why Tom is driven to do something as crazy as start a new internet station. We find out all about Tom's family and his growing up.
Tom is the architect and main man behind Radio Free Brooklyn-he pretty much knows all 100+ of us. He is loved, respected and occasionally feared. This session was a great opportunity to look back on the past 5 years to dig into how Radio Free Brooklyn has changed his life (and many people's lives, including his co-director and RFB Board President, Rob Pritchard). I know Tom pretty well, but there was a lot of learning here. We talked about his way of relating with us has changed and why. And I really enjoyed what he said about how being of service is a fundamental value/talent that runs in his family which include nurses and teachers. If you really want a deep dive into the head of Tom Tenney and what kind of person starts a non-profit radio station, listen to Episode #001 of Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit from May 13 2015. It was also the first Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit show ever! Tom hosts Frequency Theory on RFB every Thursday, 8-10pm. If you want to give Tom a birthday gift, you can do so HERE. BIO: Tom Tenney (Executive Director) was the founder and Director of the annual RE/Mixed Media Festival in NYC. His sound pieces have been heard on PRX Remix Radio, GMFE Sound Experience, Deep Wireless Festival and Streaming Festival 6. Tom got his M.A. in Media Studies from the New School and his B.F.A. AKA The Ghost Episode! In June of 2018, David Piccolomini returned as a guest on the show, but the recording came out, in a word, dreadful. It took a year, but after some work and time put in by the very kind Tom Tenney, RFB's station manager and a previous guest of L&R, the audio was *mostly* repaired! Listen in if you dare, for a lot of talk about the early days of online relationships and dating, plus Elann gets his old MySpace profile deconstructed by David! Later, Pickles goes for 3 for 3 (again) on obscure children's stage show clips.
Frankie Z co-hosts in Greg's absence. We learn that Scooter Pie is a pee shy pro and Tom Tenney is Cocky. Hosted by some nerd?

In the Studio Audience is Julia Schachter, Shane Gail, and Lesley Ware. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
