What drives people to perform at their highest level? Contrary to popular belief, it's rarely money or status. During this thought-provoking solo episode, I reflect on my transformative conversation with Dan Johnson, who built a non-profit organization with over 10,000 dedicated volunteers. His powerful insight? When you lead with genuine humility and humanity, people will walk through fire for you.At the heart of true motivation lie three fundamental pillars: purpose, ownership, and mastery. Purpose goes beyond lofty organizational visions to connect daily tasks with meaningful outcomes. Ownership transforms people from passive task-completers into active co-creators who drive results. Mastery addresses our innate desire for growth and skill development in areas that matter.Yet beneath these pillars runs something even more profound – our deeply human need to feel seen, heard, valued, and connected to something larger than ourselves. As leaders, we have the privilege of satisfying these needs through simple but powerful daily actions: giving the gift of purpose through context and meaning, presence through undivided attention, trust through empowerment, and growth through development opportunities. This approach aligns perfectly with established psychological frameworks like William Glasser's Choice Theory and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, confirming that true leadership isn't about control but connection. When we prioritize people before processes, purpose before policies, and meaning before metrics, we don't just get good work – we inspire extraordinary performance. What gift will you give your people today? In this powerful conclusion to my conversation with Hussein Paymozd, we continue exploring his transformational leadership journey. Hussein shares how he evolved from a more authoritarian, top-down style to a leader committed to helping his team meet their basic psychological needs at work.He explains how his communication shifted when he adopted an internal control mindset, moving away from external motivators like rewards and punishments and toward a more inclusive, inspiring approach. Hussein also reflects on the profound impact of translating my book, Mental Freedom, into Farsi—both personally and professionally. For leaders still relying on control-based tactics, Hussein offers wise advice—and leaves us with a memorable quote that sums up his philosophy: "Even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat." In this episode we explore the research behind Choice Theory! Developed by psychiatrist William Glasser, Choice Theory emphasizes that people's behavior is driven by their desire to fulfill five basic needs. These needs include: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun. By understanding these needs, you can empower teachers by recognizing that their behaviors stem from these needs, allowing educators to address the root cause rather than just the behavior itself. Most history books explain the details of events and provide well-researched context to these events. But history isn't just about what happened, it's often about why. The root of any social change is often complex, human emotions. In his new book, France before 1789, Jon Elster explores the circumstances leading up to the French Revolution and the limits of rational choice theory in explaining collective action. In this episode of unSILOed, Greg and Jon talk about how human emotions like fear, anger, jealousy, and hope can motivate entire populations of people to change history.Jon Elster is a professor at Columbia University and the author of a wide range of books exploring Marxism, Social Science, Choice Theory, Constitutions, and Addiction.Episode Quotes:What can we still learn about Aristotle about emotions?35:04: Many social scientists, even today, talk about emotions as if it were one great category, but emotions do their work by virtue of their specificity, that is, by their cognitive antecedents and action tendencies that are also very specific or different from the different emotions. So if you are angry, you want to make the other person suffer. If you hate, then you want other person to disappear from the face of the earth.11:43: Emotions have a short half-life and various other features that don't actually form a formal model but form a complex of features that we can find in many situations where emotions are at work.Self-interest and rationality are not the same thing10:04: Self-interest and rationality are not the same thing, but people act against their rational self-interest under the influence of emotions with respect to vengeance, revenge is often a pointless, sterile act, but it's undertaken under the impulse of very strong emotions. What's the problem with studying leadership?13:55: The problem about studying leadership is that you can identify good leaders only by their results. There's no way of identifying good leaders ex ante to pick them. That would be good. Of course, if we could, but we can't.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Rebellion FrancaiseGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Columbia UniversityHis Work:Jon Elster on Google ScholarAmerica Before 1787: The Unraveling of a Colonial RegimeFrance before 1789: The Unraveling of an Absolutist RegimeSour Grapes: Studies in the Subversion of Rationality (Cambridge Philosophy Classics) Reissue EditionSecurities Against Misrule: Juries, Assemblies, ElectionsReason and RationalityUlysses Unbound: Studies in Rationality, Precommitment, and ConstraintsStrong Feelings: Emotion, Addiction, and Human Behavior (Jean Nicod Lectures)Alchemies of the Mind: Rationality and the EmotionsNuts and Bolts for the Social SciencesExplaining Social Behavior: More Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences

As the subtitle How Generals, Weapons Manufacturers, and Foreign Governments Shape American Foreign Policy suggests, American foreign policy is driven by special interest groups, which results in millions of deaths for no good reason.

What, if any, theory of international relations best explains U.S. foreign policy outcomes? Why, for example, did President Biden withdraw American forces from Afghanistan, re-engage Iran on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, impose harsher than expected sanctions on Russia, and give more than expected support to Ukraine following the Russian invasion? Jack Goldsmith sat down with Richard Hanania, the president of the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, whose new book, “Public Choice Theory and the Illusion of Grand Strategy,” seeks to provide answers to these types of questions. They discussed Hanania's view that academic theories about American grand strategy cannot explain important U.S. foreign policy outcomes, and his argument that these outcomes are better explained by public choice theory, especially by the dominant influences on the presidency of government contractors, the national security bureaucracy, and foreign governments. They also discussed whether realistic complaints about these influences are consistent with realistic premises about how to discern the national interest and the value, if any, of international relations theorizing.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. The Leadership Project

Have you considered the difference between a “leader” and a “manager”? There is a lot of debate on LinkedIn where leadership is put on a pedestal and managers are the poor cousins that are sometimes the target of derision. We are joined by our very first returning guest on the show.  We are honoured to be joined again by Irial O'Farrell, the founder and principal of Evolution Consulting and the bestselling author of 3 books, “The Manager's Dilemma”; “Smart Objective Setting for Managers”; and “Values: Their Not Just for the Office Wall Plaque”. Management is about the process of understanding what needs to be done, developing a plan and ensuring the right work is done at the right time with the right resources and at the right cost.A leader is more looking into the future and consider whether the business and team are working towards a great vision. A leader is looking up and out into the future and has a vision to create a new world.  A manager tends to look down at the immediate to decide what needs to be done right now.The truth is that we need both. Leaders without managers will result in a great vision that is never executed and is just a dream.  A manager without a great leader will get things done but will not necessarily have clear vision and direction that will change the world. It is possible for a single person to be both a leader and manager but it does require different skillsets and mindsets. There is an argument that high performance teams and organisations could get these important bases covered by different people working in unison.Being a great leader does not automatically mean that you will be a great manager and being a great manager does not automatically mean that you will be a great leader.Where some of the debate comes in where managers can get a bad wrap is in the leadership and management styles that some people embody.  If someone has an aggressive or directive style as a manager they are unlikely to be inspirational and give people a great work environment.  People want a work environment where they have purpose and meaning in what they do; where they feel valued; where they feel motivated; and where they feel like they matter.  Rooted in the science of Glasser's Choice Theory people have a psychological need for freedom including freedom of choice and freedom from oppression.  When a manager does not have a good understanding of this and gets into a mode of just “telling” people what to do then they will start to have an impact on people around them. So, in summary, we need both.  We need leaders; we need managers.  Managers do get a bad wrap in the leaders vs managers debate.  The issue of good and bad managers is a matter of style and approach and ensuring the right style at the right time for the right reason. The debate should be about great leaders and managers vs horrible bosses rather than leaders vs managers. You can purchase a copy of the book "You're a Leader, Now What?" as an ebook or paperback at Amazon- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09ZBKK8XVThe Leadership Project:Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/theleadershipprojFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProjInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/mickspiers.officialWebsite - www.mickspiers.comYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab
