Evidence-based practices and high-quality curriculum are important, but they aren't the ONLY things school leaders need to think about. We can't effectively serve students unless we understand their community, which means we have to think beyond the classroom or therapy room. That's why I invited Edward Gordon, II, former principal and CEO of Gordon Leadership Academy, LLC to the De Facto Leaders podcast to talk about school turnaround and coaching within the education system. Edward W. Gordon, II is a native of Montclair, New Jersey. He is the proud father of Edward W. Gordon, III. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of South Carolina in 1998. Edward also earned a Master's in Music Education from New Jersey City University in 2002, and a Master's in Educational Leadership in 2003. He is a Certified Principal for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.Mr. Gordon has over 20 years of experience in education and has led staff and students from preschool through high school. He was one of three graduates of the PhillyPLUS School Turnaround Program, a selective residency program focused on serving underperforming schools.Edward hosts a weekly broadcast entitled The Principal's Office where he highlights educational stakeholders who are making a difference in their lives, the lives of others and with others. He is the CEO of Gordon Leadership Academy, LLC, a company that coaches and mentors aspiring and current school leaders globally. His motto is, “If I can help somebody, then my living shall not be in vain.”In this conversation, we discuss: ✅What's really behind school attendance issues, and what happens when the school vision doesn't align with the student body and community.✅What's the difference between coaching, mentoring, therapy, and consulting? How can people in education and healthcare both deliver and use these services to lead fulfilling careers? ✅Why and how educators, leaders, and therapists can form partnerships with local businesses and community organizations to better serve students. You can connect with Edward on LinkedIn here and on Facebook here. Tom Ryan is a writer, director, and producer who was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. He studied the media arts for two years at New Jersey City University (formally Jersey City State College).Since his early childhood Tom has had a great passion for genre films, particularly horror. He nurtured that passion by shooting movies on a VHS camera, drawing a slasher-comic series titled “Midnight”, and taking every opportunity he could to escape to the movies. With a handful of childhood friends that share in his love of terrifying stories, Tom founded an independent production company called “Theatre of Terror”. With a mission to make high-quality, low-budget independent horror, they launched their first short film “Day 9” in January of 2013.Tom then wrote, produced, directed and starred in his first feature film, “FACES”. Filming began in late 2013 and the production wrapped in August of 2014. The film premiered on October 10th at the Landmark Loews theater in Jersey City to an audience of over 350 people. A successful festival run resulted in an Audience Choice Best Feature, Best Soundtrack, and a Best Actor Award for Tom.This momentum inspired him to officially create Theatre of Terror LLC. He created a website and social media page to focus his marketing strategy. The production company successfully completed the four- film anthology “The Theatre of Terror” featuring the award-winning shorts: The Gift, The Bookworm, Abducted, and Endangered. The feature received distribution through Bayview Entertainment and led to the development and production of the sequel anthology, “Return to The Theatre of Terror”.Tom has worked as a director and actor on other productions outside of his own as well. He helmed the 2015 short film “RAPT” and the 2022 feature film “Ramsey”. Higher Calling is a project for everyone who decided to become a scholar because they believed in the mission of higher education, and specifically, for everyone who saw participating in and working for higher education as a way to turn the pursuit of justice into a career. It aims to help you understand how to better align a career in academia with your sense of purpose; how to recognize when your purposes are no longer served by academia; how to pursue scholarly purpose outside of an academic career; and when and how to fight back against the broken system which is higher education in the United States. At times, one may wonder if the compromises are too great, the labor conditions untenable, or the barriers to doing meaningful work too high. This project aims to help you navigate these moments alone and in community through essays, exercises, and rituals. You can download the workbook here. Join Haymarket and Spectre Journal for a launch of Kim Moody's new book, Breaking the Impasse. Unlike most countries, the US has no labor party, let alone a mass socialist party. In an effort to overcome this predicament, a new generation of militants hope to transform the Democratic Party or use its ballot to build forces inside it for an eventual “dirty break.” In his new book, Moody argues this electoral orientation is a trap and that socialists should instead build class and social struggle and galvanize a militant minority as the preconditions for the formation of a working class party. Get the book, Breaking the Impasse: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1873-breaking-the-impasse Speakers: Kim Moody was a founder of Labor Notes in the US and the author of several books on labour and politics including Breaking the Impasse: Electoral Politics, Mass Action & the New Socialist Movement in the United States (2022); Tramps & Trade Union Travelers: Internal Migration and Organized Labor in Gilded Age America (2017); and On New Terrain: How Capital Is Reshaping The Battleground Of Class War; all from Haymarket. He has a PhD from the University of Nottingham and is currently a Visiting Scholar at the University of Westminster in London. He is a member of the University and College Union and the National Union of Journalists. Joe Burns is a veteran union negotiator and labor lawyer with over 25 years experience negotiating labor agreements. He is currently the Director of Collective Bargaining for the Association of Flight Attendants, CWA. He graduated from the New York University School of Law. Prior to law school he worked in a public sector hospital and was president of his AFSCME Local. He is a co-founder and co-chair of the BMWED-IBT Rank & File United reform caucus. Liberato is a member of the Democratic Socialist of America where he served as a member of the National Political Committee from 2020-2021. Lois Weiner, Professor Emerita, New Jersey City University, is a career teacher, education researcher, and teacher union activist. Her new book, as yet untitled, takes up what the Left can learn about defending social justice and workers' rights by examining capitalism's latest project to deprofessionalize teaching, undercut teachers' labor activism, and destroy public education. You've heard of piano-vocal duos and guitar-vocal duos. But what about trombone-vocal duos? Vanessa Perea and husband Robert Edwards are trendsetting this unique instrumentation. They first showcased it on their album Home Life in 2021, which was a purely vocal and trombone album. Now their latest album, It Had To Be You, brings that same playful interaction — and adds guitarist Tony Davis and bassist Dylan Shamat. Vanessa and Robert first met during their undergrad years at New Jersey City University. A move across the river into New York City proved fruitful to both of their careers. Calls were coming in and their schedules stayed busy. That is, until the pandemic hit. With nothing but time to kill, Vanessa and Robert started exploring the idea of playing with what they had — a voice and a trombone — and spent hours working out arrangements (much to the chagrin of their downstairs neighbors). When social distancing restrictions were lifted, they were happy to add a few more band members to their project. It Had To Be You is a delightful offering of musicians pushing the boundaries of traditional instrumentation. Listen to this Bite-Size Jazz episode featuring Vanessa Perea to get to know a vocalist with a style all her own. She talks about learning to coordinate vocal-trombone performing, the process of recording the album, and her musical background. Resources: Learn more about Vanessa Perea on her website, Instagram, or Facebook. You can find It Had To Be You anywhere you stream music. It's also available for purchase on Amazon Music or Bandcamp. Enjoying Bite-Size Jazz? Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
