In this episode of OutBüro Voices featuring LGBTQ professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders from around the world, host Dennis Velco chats with Ph.D. candidate Brison "Scholar Lee" Downing about his thesis project. Downing, a person of transgender experience himself knows all too well the adjustments, strains, and struggles family members can often experience when a child or loved one comes out as transgender and during the transitioning experience. As Downing expresses, family, loved ones, and friends are not the persons directly going through the physical changes, yet they too are going through the transition often experiencing emotions of loss of a loved one. These are normal feelings he explains. He explains there is a limited number of studies to date, yet the participant pool has been predominately US Caucasian families. Downing's study is to broaden the current research study pool striving to include underrepresented minority families. He states that to better serve all we need the perspective that different races, ethnically and cultural backgrounds bring to the learning and sharing conversations. Downing's goal is to publish his findings in hopes to be a resource for all parents, loved ones, and family members to cope with the emotions and retain as well as grow stronger loving relationships. The Supreme Court on January 27, asked the government to explain why a law meant to protect the transgender community requires a magistrate's certificate as a prior condition for the State to even identify a transperson. The court was responding to a petition filed by Swati Bidhan Baruah, an Assam-based advocate and transgender rights activist. As this story develops, here's our podcast on the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019, when it was made into law by Parliament in November last year. This podcast looks at which provisions in the Bill are problematic and why it was met by protests from activists and the transgender community, who said it showed a poor understanding of gender and sexual identity. Guest: Ramya Kannan, Chief of Bureau, T.N., The Hindu

The transgender/gender nonconforming (TGNC) community faces a variety of challenges including access to healthcare, societal stigma, and discrimination. As a profession, pharmacy is well-positioned to reduce and address the barriers to care faced by TGNC individuals and to provide them with positive experiences within the healthcare system. However, formal instruction about this patient population's social and medical needs is lacking in most pharmacy school curricula. Today's episode tackles the recent Supreme Court orders in the Trump ban on transgender service members. How did we get here and what's next? Listen and find out. We begin, however, with a brief Andrew Was Wrong segment regarding the history and modern politics of the State of the Union. After that, it's time for the main segment, which dives deeply into the history of trans service in the U.S. military, including a discussion of what it means to bring a case pursuant to the equal protection clause and what the future likely holds. Then, it's time for a rapid-fire round of questions about Trump's shutdown. Why is Congress still getting paid? Who can sue, and why haven't they? Find out the answers to these questions and more! The California HIV/AIDS Research Program (CHRP) is funding the largest demonstration project of its kind in the US, to determine the acceptability, utilization, adherence, and pharmacokinetics of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication among transgender persons to promote their health and protect their lives. As researchers, participants and healthcare providers explain here, the three CHRP-supported studies across the state use different techniques, such as providing PrEP and hormonal therapy together at a single clinic visit, offering in-depth pharmacokinetic analyses on how the two treatments interact, or creating a custom text messaging app to communicate with providers and offer peer support. Information on how to enroll in the University of California-affiliated studies is included. Series: "UCTV Prime" [Public Affairs] [Health and Medicine] [Show ID: 33176]
