Spring is a season of rapid change inside the hive, and in this Bee Science segment, Dr. Dewey Caron walks through what drives colony expansion—and how beekeepers can respond effectively.   Dewey emphasizes that spring growth is fundamentally tied to pollen availability and favorable flying weather. Colonies in warmer climates may expand gradually, while northern colonies often experience a compressed and intense buildup. This variability makes local awareness and timing essential. Nutrition plays a central role. Research going back to Heather Mattila's 2006 work shows that colonies receiving pollen or protein supplements begin brood rearing earlier and build stronger populations. More recent work reinforces that locally sourced pollen may improve effectiveness, and emerging commercial feeds are showing measurable gains in overwinter survival and pollination strength. As colonies grow, so does the risk of swarming. Dewey underscores the importance of proactive management—providing adequate space, maintaining ventilation, and monitoring brood nest congestion. Once swarm preparation begins, options narrow quickly, making early intervention key. The episode also introduces the "Goldilocks effect" in evaluating colony strength. Colonies that are too weak struggle to build, while overly strong colonies risk swarming. The goal is finding that "just right" balance through regular inspection, brood assessment, and strategic frame movement. Health risks remain present during this expansion phase. Diseases like European foulbrood and chalkbrood, along with pesticide exposure and nutritional stress, can limit colony development. At the same time, brood expansion creates ideal conditions for varroa reproduction, reinforcing the need for integrated management. 2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the inaugural installment, from all the way back in 2018. It features a semi-standard intro and outro, and a standard mixtape - with the exception of the fact that every track is selected by the listeners (40 tracks - 18 contributors) - and that the intro and outro are guest-curated by a collage of 11 of those same 18 contributors. It was also, at the time, the longest non-retrospective episode in show history - and featured a long, glorious outtakes reel at the end! C1E99 will share a great many of these same attributes! It will feature 70 tracks, collectively selected by 8 listeners (6 of which also contributed to today's rerun (and 3 of which were also featured in vol 2). At just under 3.5hrs, it will also be the longest mixtape in non-retrospective Ch 1 history (even if this new record nearly doubles the [then] record which the 2018 episode set). And it will also feature a semi-standard intro and outro, largely guest-hosted by a collage of the contributing listeners. In fact, unlike today's rerun, this time every single track contributor also contribute their voices to the intro and outro (except for the one which prizes anonimity and requested a text-to-speech be used in his place). And I also anticipate 99 to feature a fairly decent outtakes reel - though not quite as robust and spectacular as today's rerun. So, where vol 2 is less a "sequel" to vol 1 per se, and more of an "omake" (or an "outtakes") of vol 1, the upcoming vol 3 will be the true sequel to today's rerun. The long-awaited "echo". The "let's do this exact same thing one more time". In fact, due to a joint failure of double-checking from both St. John and the contributing listener, C1E99 will even feature one track that was featured in today's rerun. So be on the look out for that and see if you can spot which one it is before the reveal! And yes, it even was the same contributing listener in both episodes! D'oh! :-) Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2018 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. If you are new, and this is your first exposure to NNR, and you enjoyed the content, but were put off by the production, either go back and listen to a recent episode, such as C1E98 or C1E96....or perhaps even better, keep your eyes peeled for C1E99, which is basically this all over again, but at 2025's far improved production quality standards! More than 100 Oregon students with both vision and hearing impairments are anticipating a decline in services in schools, as the federal government has suddenly cut a five-year grant for the Oregon DeafBlind Project. The program serves DeafBlind Oregonians from birth up until the age of 21 at no cost to families or school districts. The goal of the program is to provide training to local teachers and school staff to support students with DeafBlindness. Lisa McConachie is the director of the project. She joins us to share more on what these cuts will mean for students.  

2025 Rerun Notes: In commemoration of this month release of the last-ever Mishmash Monday on Channel 1, I thought I'd rerun the first two installments of the series - both from all the way back in 2017 (Season 1 of the show). Therefore, all the obvious caveats on "absolutely atrocious production quality" and blah blah blah (especially on C1E10, the earlier of the two releases). Though this rerun is "officially" and "canonically" the first "Mishmash Monday" (free play) episode in Nerd Noise Radio history, it is really "Mishmash Monday in name only" as it wasn't truly a free play. Instead, it was designed with a very specific purpose and with each track housing a very specific meaning. Though I explain and elaborate fully in a 2019 special expanded rebroadcast of this episode we called "Chandlerfest", which I'll link to below, for now, the tl;dr is that this mixtape was actually made in commemoration for a friend who died entirely too young in Dec 2016, and whose absence we still feel regularly from here in 2025. When I got the news, I left work, went home, and turned my grief into tortured energy, and made this mixtape, with the design philosophy being to use the tracks and the particular arch of the track order to tell the story of the emotions of those of us left behind in his wake as we processed the news of his departure. With this being a 2017 episode, all the obvious caveats on "absolutely atrocious production quality" (especially episodes from the first half of 2017, which were even worse than those from the second half.) But content-wise, this early outing remains one of the most important episodes of Nerd Noise Radio....ever. For decades, rural Oregon counties that contain large swaths of federally owned forest land have depended on a share of timber revenues from federal logging to fund schools, law enforcement and other essential public services. These payments were originally meant to offset the loss of property tax revenue that counties could not collect on federal lands. But when logging on these lands slowed drastically in the 1990s due to new environmental protections — like the Endangered Species Act — those payments plummeted.    In response, Congress stepped in with a temporary fix: the Secure Rural Schools Program. First passed in 2000, Congress reauthorized it multiple times over the years until it allowed it to expire in 2023. Congress which it enacted in 2000 and reauthorized multiple times until it expired in 2023. The lapse in the SRS reauthorization has triggered the default distribution of the significantly reduced timber revenue to counties.    The federal budget process has introduced new complications as well. President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which was signed into law in July, requires federal agencies to ramp up logging. But it also includes a provision redirecting all proceeds from timber sales on lands in counties to the federal government — threatening one of the last fiscal lifelines for rural governments to fund its core services.   With counties facing budgeting shortfalls that carry big consequences, questions about how to create a long-term sustainable path forward have taken on new urgency. Lane County Commissioner Heather Buch and Klamath County Commissioner Derrick DeGroot — whose counties receive the second- and third-highest federal payments in Oregon after Douglas County — join us, along with Mark Haggerty, a senior fellow at the liberal-leaning thinktank Center for American Progress to talk about the challenges Oregon’s rural counties face and what a stable funding model for these counties might look like.   Curry County Commissioner Jay Trost declined to participate in the conversation but provided OPB with a statement:  Curry County has the second lowest property tax rate in Oregon at .59 per thousand of assessed value and like most Oregon Counties, we have not been able to keep up with the inflation over the past 4 years.  We had to endure a 31% reduction in the county budget for the 24/25 fiscal year, we were able to maintain that with no further budget reductions in the 25/26 budget because of timber revenues that came in and covered the annual employee role up costs.  These O&C timber funds allowed us to remain fairly status quo in terms of service delivery.  Going forward if those funds are not made available to us, we will most likely see more reductions in county services.  We are working diligently to think outside the box, identify alternative solutions that will maximize each dollar and become more efficient. These efforts will help and are necessary, however the reality remains the same, if we don’t receive timber revenues, and or PILT (payment in lieu of taxes)  payments we will have to make cuts.  We remain confident that the federal legislature will correct the language needed to ensure that counties like ours that rely on natural resources revenue will not be negatively impacted.

2025 Show Notes Amendment: I love the setup we have here where on the first day of the month, we released our final ever TwoFer Tuesday, and now, here at the last day of the month, we re-release our first ever TwoFer Tuesday! It feels like a wonder twist on "bookends". As always when re-running early episodes, please excuse the atrocious production quality. One of my favorite things looking back on the early episodes of the show is how "different, yet the same" they are. From a sound quality perspective, the differences are night and day in every aspect. But in terms of show format and events, other than missing the now customary summary introduction, and the fact that they've gradually gotten longer over the years, it's the same darned show that it's always been. And what the early episodes lack in polish and finesse and technique and maturity, they somewhat make up for in youthful exuberance and wide-eyed optimism, and a simply innocent fun.
