"It's not what happens. It's the story you tell yourself about what's happening." -Antonio Michael Downing On this episode of Turmeric & Tequila™, Kristen Olson sits down with critically acclaimed author, speaker, and musician Antonio Michael Downing for a deeply personal conversation about identity, resilience, creativity, reinvention, belonging, and the power of storytelling. Antonio Michael Downing is the author of the acclaimed memoir Saga Boy, the novel Black Cherokee, and Stars in My Crown, and he creates music under his alter ego John Orpheus. His work explores identity, transformation, belonging, and what it takes to change the way we see ourselves. But this conversation goes far beyond books. Kristen and Antonio unpack the question so many of us eventually face: Who am I—and who am I becoming? Antonio shares how his childhood in Trinidad, his grandmother, music, sports, mentors, and the different identities he created throughout his life ultimately helped him understand himself more deeply. They talk about the experience of "trying on" different versions of yourself, what happens when those versions no longer fit, and why making peace with your past can be necessary before you can confidently choose your future. Antonio also explains how writing Saga Boy became part of his own process of coming back to himself, including conducting hundreds of hours of interviews with people from his life to reconstruct his story. The conversation then moves into one of the most powerful ideas of the episode: You have the ability to rewrite the story. Antonio explains that the events of our lives aren't necessarily the thing that defines us—the meaning and narrative we attach to those events can profoundly influence how we move forward. You'll also hear about: Finding your identity Coming home to yourself The power of your childhood self Reinvention and personal transformation The role of sports and coaches in shaping identity Creativity as a pathway to self-discovery Antonio's musical alter ego, John Orpheus Saga Boy and the journey of becoming Black Cherokee and questions of belonging Storytelling and personal narrative Journaling and grounding Breathwork and reconnecting with yourself How problems and adversity reveal character Why identity matters in an increasingly noisy world How to consciously reshape the story you tell yourself Antonio's own mission is beautifully aligned with this conversation: "the story you tell defines you," and he believes great stories are rooted in authenticity, empathy, and integrity. This is a conversation about identity, self-discovery, resilience, and the courage to become the person you were always capable of being. What if luck plays a bigger role in fund success than anyone wants to admit? Simon Evan-Cook isn't just throwing that idea out there. He's lived it. He spent years on the allocator side, vetting fund managers and learning what really sticks (hint: it's not just your track record). Now that he's a fund manager himself, he's pulling back the curtain on the truth no one wants to say out loud… Yes, being good at what you do matters, but so does luck, timing, and learning how to stack the odds in your favor. In this Episode, Simon and Stacy dig into: Why some of the most skilled fund managers don't always win 13 ways emerging managers can make their own luck What allocators actually remember after your pitch And why being honest, even when it's uncomfortable, is the real differentiator This is Billion Dollar Backstory: Encore, because some conversations are just too good not to bring back.About Simon Evan-Cook: Simon Evan-Cook is an award-winning multi-asset fund manager. In 2022 he joined Downing to set up and manage the Downing Fox range of funds. Before that he built his reputation at Premier Asset Management from 2006, where he was a senior member of their highly successful multi-asset team. He began his career with Fidelity in the late 90s, before joining Rothschild Asset Management and then Gartmore. Simon also writes on investment (and beyond), including a monthly column for Citywire Magazine and his investment blog on Medium.com. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and dog, devouring movies and books, and superficially damaging European golf courses. ---Running a fund is hard enough.Ops shouldn't be.Meet the team that makes it easier. | billiondollarbackstory.com/ultimus

Links Your Mission Aligned, nonprofit coaching services Discover Identity, nonprofit retreats Watch the video and share your thoughts in the Zion Lab community Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights Alan and Marianne Downing discuss the concept of identity and its significance in personal development and leadership within the Latter-day Saint community. They emphasize the importance of understanding one’s identity beyond roles and societal expectations, particularly during life transitions. Key Insights Identity Exploration: The fundamental question of “Who am I?” is central to personal growth. Identity is not static; it evolves through life experiences and transitions, such as changes in church callings or family dynamics. Deeper Understanding: True identity goes beyond titles like “mother” or “bishop.” It involves understanding personal values, beliefs, and what makes each individual unique. Belonging vs. Fitting In: There is a distinction between belonging (sharing core beliefs) and fitting in (conforming to external expectations). Leaders should encourage individuality within the community to enhance unity. Risk and Growth: Personal growth often requires taking risks and stepping outside comfort zones. Experiences, such as retreats, can facilitate deeper understanding and wisdom. Mature vs. Immature Identity: Immature identity relies on external validation, while mature identity is anchored in self-awareness and allows for flexibility and growth. Leadership Applications Encourage Individuality: Leaders can foster an environment where members feel safe to express their unique identities, which can enhance community strength and diversity. Facilitate Experiences: Organizing smaller group discussions or experiential learning opportunities can help members explore their identities and support each other through personal challenges. Model Vulnerability: Leaders should be open about their own identity journeys, demonstrating that it is acceptable to question and explore one’s faith and personal growth, thereby creating a culture of openness and support. 00:05:07 – The Concept of Identity 00:06:40 – Exploring Identity Beyond Roles 00:08:07 – The Depth of Identity in the Gospel 00:09:32 – The Paradox of Identity and Individuality 00:10:29 – Navigating Group Identity vs. Individual Identity 00:12:28 – Personal Experiences with Identity 00:15:00 – The Downings’ Journey into Identity Work 00:18:01 – The Importance of Self-Discovery 00:20:40 – The Role of Experience in Identity Formation 00:24:40 – The Balance of Self and God's Expectations 00:26:41 – Mature vs. Immature Identity 00:30:12 – The Role of Risk in Growth 00:32:15 – Experiential Learning and Retreats 00:34:22 – The Need for Community in Personal Growth 00:36:47 – The Importance of Anchors in Identity 00:39:14 – Embracing the Journey of Identity The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints’ mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. Senior director of social media and digital host for the Ravens Garrett Downing joined the show to discuss his takeaways from Ravens training camp so far.
AI governance is becoming essential as businesses automate more decisions and connect artificial intelligence to sensitive corporate data. Nicky Downing, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Guideline BizTech, explains why organisations must build trust, ethics, and accountability into AI systems from the beginning. She introduces RUBIQ Hub, an AI-first digital trust platform designed to help enterprises adopt AI responsibly, securely, and at scale. The discussion examines why many AI projects fail when they begin as isolated technology initiatives without sufficient business context. Downing explains the importance of governance, risk management, compliance, clear objectives, and ethical frameworks before automation is introduced. She also argues that people must remain accountable for AI-supported decisions. The human-in-the-loop model can allow businesses to automate repetitive work while reskilling employees for oversight, communication, and higher-value roles. For South African companies, the episode offers practical guidance on protecting confidential information, avoiding uncontrolled public AI tools, and ensuring that AI agents operate within defined responsibilities. 0:00 Intro 1:02 Nicky Downing's governance journey 4:19 Building trustworthy enterprise AI 11:49 Why trust matters in AI 17:33 The biggest AI adoption risks 25:21 Keeping humans in the loop 28:32 How the Ethos governance layer works Follow MyBroadband: X - https://twitter.com/mybroadband Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mybroadband Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mybroadband/ Website - https://mybroadband.co.za/news/ #AIGovernance #ResponsibleAI #ArtificialIntelligence
A cemetery at the end of a one-road village in Trinidad, a grandmother who couldn't read without help. This is where author, speaker, and musician Antonio Michael Downing learned that creativity isn't a talent, it's a survival tool.Antonio joins Real Things Living to share how his grandmother in Trinidad taught him to read and sing, not as hobbies, but as ways to cope with a hard life. It's the lessons that carried him through an unstable teenage years, a corporate tech career, and into becoming a published author (Saga Boy, Black Cherokee) and musician. The conversation explores creativity as a mindset, not just an output, and how art helps us process difficulty, find authenticity, and connect with others.3 Takeaways:(1) Creativity isn't reserved for artists — it's a life skill for coping, problem-solving, and reframing your story.(2) Art gives us practice for real life, helping us sit with ambiguity and hard emotions before we face them directly.(3) What connects people is more powerful than what divides them, and that connection builds resilience.Follow Antonio Michael Downing on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter/X @AntonioMichaelDowning, and pick up "Saga Boy" and "Black Cherokee" wherever books are sold.

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall.*Inniu an t-ochtú lá déag de mhí Iúil. Is mise Eoin Ó Seachnasaigh.I ndiaidh cúpla seachtain dhrámatúil i bpolaitíocht na Breataine, tá an Feisire Parlaiminte nuathofa do Makerfield, Andy Burnham,ar tí seilbh a ghlacadh ar Uimhir 10 Sráid Downing. Cé go bhfuair Burnham, a bheidh ina sheachtú Príomh-Aire ar an mBreatain le deich mbliana anuas, ainmniúcháin ó 322 de na 403 Feisire de chuid Pháirtí an Lucht Oibre, tá dúshláin go leor roimhe anois, agus gan ach trí bliana fágtha den téarma rialtais. Beidh na fadhbanna tromchúiseacha ba chúis le titim a réamhtheachtaí, Sir Keir Starmer, faoi chúram iar-Mhéara Mhanchain go luath, lena n-áirítear míshástacht an phobail leis an rialtas, na géarchéimeanna leanúnacha sa Mheánoirthear agus an brú atá ag teacht ó ghrúpaí éagsúla chun caiteachas cosanta a mhéadú gan cáin ioncaim a ardú. Ní hé Burnham an t-aon pholaiteoir mór le rá sa Bhreatain atá i gcruachás faoi láthair, áfach. Tá ceisteanna crua le freagairt ag a phríomh-iomaitheoir, Nigel Farage, ceannaire an pháirtí Reform UK, tar éis teacht chun solais gur ghlac Farage le cúig mhilliún punt ó bhilliúnaí criptea-airgeadra. I measc ábhair imní gur sciúradh airgid a bhí ar siúl, tá an síntiús á fhiosrú anois ag an National Crime Agency, agus idir an dá linn, tá Farage tar éis éirí as a phost mar Fheisire Parlaiminte do Clacton, agus é ag súil go léireodh fothoghchán úr tacaíocht an phobail dó féin agus don mhaíomh gur íospartach den chóras oifigiúil é. Mar fhreagra, tá sé fógartha ag Páirtí an LuchtOibre, na Coimeádaigh, na Glasaigh agus na Daonlathaithe Liobrálacha nach mbeidh siad ag seasamh san fhothoghchán, agus is cosúil gurb é cuairteoir ón spás amuigh, darb ainm Count Binface, a bheidh ina phríomh-iomaitheoir do Farage.Dea-scéala do lucht leanúna an cheoil Éireannaigh a nascann an traidisiún leis an turgnamh, tá Trá Pháidín ar ais le halbam nua, go gairid i ndiaidh An A24 ón mbliain seo caite. Tarraingíonn an t-albam nua, Cloch ‘s Claí, inspioráid ón úrscéal aoiriúil cáiliúil le Myles na gCopaleen, An Béal Bocht, agus pléann sé an gaol idir an Ghaeltacht agus an chuid eile d'Éirinn chomhaimseartha, agus béim ar leith á cur ar chúrsaí tithíochta, ar fhadhbannaeacnamaíocha agus ar cheisteanna féiniúlachta. Is é seo an chéad eisiúint ag an ngrúpa ar an lipéad World of Echo, atá lonnaithe i Londain, agus a dhíolann ceirníní ó cheoltóirí ceannródaíocha ar fud an domhain, agus mar thoradh air sin, tabharfaidh sé deis do lucht éisteachta idirnáisiúnta aithne a chur ar an dream as Conamara. Tar éis 102 cluiche agus breis agus mí a bhí lán de scileanna iontacha, botúin thubaisteacha, taispeántais laochúla, moilleanna de bharr VAR agus conspóid pholaitiúil, tá Corn an Domhain ag druidim chun deiridh. Cé gurb iad an Spáinn rogha na coitiantachta, tar éis dóibh an Fhrainc a shárú in Dallas oíche Dé Máirt, le cúil ó Mikel Oyarzabal agus Pedro Porro, beidh neart le déanamh acu chun an lámh in uachtar a fháil ar an Airgintín, atá ag filleadh ar an gcluiche ceannais mar seaimpíní gan chloí tar éis bua cáiliúil i gcoinne Shasana ag Staid Atlanta oíche Dé Céadaoin. Níos cóngaraí don bhaile, ar lá spóirt lán le haicsean, fillfidh Gaillimh ar Chluiche Ceannais Iomána na hÉireann den chéad uair ó 2018, agus iad ag tabhairt aghaidh ar fhoireann Luimnigh atá sa tóir ar a séú theideal in ocht mbliana. Beidh Gaillimh ag súil go mbeidh an tosaí Rory Burke i mbarr a réime arís tar éis an gortú a d'fhulaing sé i gcluiche ceannais Laighean, agus tá faoiseamh ar fhir na Mumhan go bhfuil a gcaptaen, Cian Lynch, réidh le himirt tar éis dó a bheith as láthair ón mbua ar Chontae an Chláir. *GLUAISréamhtheachtaí - predecessorspás amuigh - outer spaceturgnamh - experimentaoiriúil - satiricalrogha na coitiantachta - the favourite to win i mbarr a réime - at the top of his game

In the U.K., the government developed a group tasked with “dreaming up psychological tricks to alter our behaviour” without the people being aware of it. The Behavioural Insights Team, known unofficially as the “Nudge Unit”, set the narrative for the COVID-19 fiasco. They were the team behind the infamous slogan, “Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives”, which was astroturfed into existence at the behest of 10 Downing. Thirty years earlier, Hollywood also “nudged” a generation of people to consume endlessly, seek disposable relationships, and build nothing during their time on Earth. The apathy of the Seinfeld characters towards premarital commitments prepped a generation to become a very comfortable, lonely, and sterile civilization. Social engineers seeking to lower population rates have continued to use television as a tool to adjust cultural norms and change behaviors without anyone noticing.---Macroaggressionswww.Macroaggressions.ioMerch StoreLink Tree Video ChannelsRumble | YouTube | BrighteonActivist PostNewsletter Sign UpAudiobooksHypocrazyThe Octopus of Global ControlSupport Our SponsorsReplace Your Mortgage: www.WipeOutYourMortgageNow.comGround Luxe Grounding MatsC60 Power | Promo Code: MACROChemical Free Body | Promo Code: MACROWise Wolf Gold & SilverLegalShield: www.DontGetPushedAround.comChristian Yordanov's Health ProgramThe Dollar VigilanteNesa's Hemp | Promo Code: MACROAugason Farms

In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, host John Scardena sits down with emergency management thought leader and Logista co-founder Drew Downing for a candid discussion on the future of emergency management, readiness, and disaster resilience. Known for his influential social media content and honest takes on the profession, Downing explores why the field struggles with credibility, burnout, and measuring true readiness. The conversation dives into prevention versus response, the limitations of traditional funding, and how communities can better measure readiness by focusing on resilience and self-sustainability rather than simply how quickly help arrives. Using examples from public health, wildfire response, and international emergency management models, the episode challenges conventional thinking about what it means to truly prepare communities for disasters. The discussion also tackles leadership, communication, and relationship-building within emergency management organizations. John and Drew examine why emergency managers need stronger storytelling and communication skills to build trust with elected officials and stakeholders. From the importance of “reading the room” to balancing data with emotional intelligence, the episode highlights how credibility and human connection often matter more than reports or metrics alone. The conversation also explores mitigation, recovery challenges, community vulnerability, and lessons learned from European civil preparedness models and modern conflict zones. Packed with practical insights and honest reflections, this episode offers emergency managers, public health professionals, and resilience leaders a fresh perspective on choosing “the right hard” in disaster management. #disastertough #EmergencyManagement #Readiness #Resilience #Leadership #Preparedness #DisasterResponse #PublicHealth #Mitigation #Recovery #RiskManagement #CommunityResilience

In the autumn of 1983 the world came very close to nuclear disaster without even knowing about it. US President Ronald Reagan would later recall the 'really scary' events of that year, which, as our guest Taylor Downing explains, were among the most dangerous of the Cold War Era. The nuclear scare of 1983 was generated by a series of factors that coalesced in terrifying style. There was the bellicose rhetoric of a new president, the paranoia of the aging political elite in the Kremlin and the disorienting pace of technological change. Downing guides us through the various elements of this frightening story in this episode, which climaxes with a moment of high drama in November 1983. The scenes, characters and storylines in this episode of Travels Through Time all feature in Taylor Downing's book, 1983: The World At The Brink. Show Notes Scene One: 23 March 1983. The White House Oval office; Reagan publicly announces on TV his Strategic Defense Initiative, known as his Star Wars policy. Scene Two: 26 Sept 1983; Serpukhov-15 Early Warning Satellite station 80 miles south of Moscow; Lt Col Stanislav Petrov takes a shift in what becomes a dramatic night. Scene Three: 9 November 1983; NATO Command HQ, Mons Belgium and Kuntsevo Clinic outside Moscow; Able Archer 83 reaches its climax. Memento: The Soviet situation board.
