Since the last time we caught up with comedian Hari Kondabolu in October of 2019, so much has happened — both in the world and in his life.
In this episode of Your Mama's Kitchen, comedian, writer and TV host Hari Kondabolu talks about growing up in Queens, New York City, where his mother brought her native South India to the dinner table with an unforgettable peanut chutney. Hari Kondabolu is a comedian, writer, TV host, and podcaster based in Brooklyn, New York. His comedy covers subjects including race, inequity, and Indian stereotypes. The latter was the basis of Kondabolu's 2017 documentary, “The Problem with Apu,” a cultural critique of The Simpsons' character, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. His 2018 Netflix special “Warn Your Relatives” was named in several Best Of Year lists including Time, Paste, and Cosmopolitan. He is a former writer and correspondent on the FX show “Totally Biased with W. We reminisce about our internships: Vanessa's time at the Oxygen network and Sesame Street, Hari's time as a "Clintern" for Hilary Clinton and Jonah's days interning in the music department at the production company behind this week's topic: MTV's THE REAL WORLD! Together, the three of us reminisce about the groundbreaking reality show, our favorite memories from the early seasons, how the show mirrored our culture—and Jonah gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse about working the front desk of Bunim/Murray Productions in fear of an appearance by Puck! Finally we play a round of LEGIT MOAN OR UNNECESSARY GROAN where we debate the difference between bedspreads and quilts, the trend of false advertising when it comes to fast food commercials and why there aren't enough greeting cards for super specific events. Hari Kondabolu is a very funny stand-up comic, an astute observer on race and racial politics, a writer and filmmaker, a Brooklynite and, most recently a dad. His latest special is out this week on YouTube. Filmed right here in Gowanus at the Bell House, “Vacation Baby” is some of his more personal work to date. In it, he discusses the surreal nature of having a baby in the middle of a global pandemic. Filmed days after Roe v Wade was overturned, though, he leaves nothing on the table in terms of his biting political wit.
