In this episode of Your Mama's Kitchen, comedian, writer and TV host Hari Kondabolu talks about growing up in Queens, New York City, where his mother brought her native South India to the dinner table with an unforgettable peanut chutney. Hari also discusses his parents' quiet activism – and how, from his mother, Hari learned to use humor to confront the world's injustices. Hari Kondabolu is a comedian, writer, TV host, and podcaster based in Brooklyn, New York. His comedy covers subjects including race, inequity, and Indian stereotypes. The latter was the basis of Kondabolu's 2017 documentary, “The Problem with Apu,” a cultural critique of The Simpsons' character, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. His 2018 Netflix special “Warn Your Relatives” was named in several Best Of Year lists including Time, Paste, and Cosmopolitan. He is a former writer and correspondent on the FX show “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell” and regularly appears on NPR's “Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me” and WNYC's “Midday on WNYC.” Kondabolu attended both Bowdoin College and Wesleyan University and earned a Masters in Human Rights from the London School of Economics.Kondabolu's newest comedy special and album, “Vacation Baby”, is available worldwide free on YouTube. He previously released two chart-topping comedy albums, Waiting for 2042 and Mainstream American Comic. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Few things in this life make one rethink the state of the world quiet like parenthood. It's a subject Hari Kondabolu knows well. The comedian's dives into the topic on his latest standup album, Vacation Baby – though the subject of social consciousness is never too far behind. That's something that has permeated his career from the beginning, including Politically Re-Active, a podcast cohosted with W. Kamau Bell, and 2017's The Trouble With Apu. Kondabolu joins us to discuss his journey through comedy and politics. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week on Good One, host Jesse David Fox talks to comedian Hari Kondabolu! From his time as a writer/performer on Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell to his 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu to his 2018 Netflix special Warn Your Relatives, Kondabolu has been one of the foremost political comedians. His work brings to mind the question of what comedy actually can do to foster social progress. Now Kondabolu is back with a new YouTube special, Vacation Baby, which seems him heading in a more personal direction, talking about the birth of his son while keeping his socio-political bent. You can stream Vacation Baby on YouTube. N., Han, X., Mertz, J. Abstract: Voltage imaging with cellular specificity has been made possible by the tremendous advances in genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs). However, the kilohertz rates required for voltage imaging lead to weak signals. Moreover, out-of-focus fluorescence and tissue scattering produce background that both undermines signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and induces crosstalk between cells, making reliable in vivo imaging in densely labeled tissue highly challenging. We describe a microscope that combines the distinct advantages of targeted illumination and confocal gating, while also maximizing signal detection efficiency. The resulting benefits in SNR and crosstalk reduction are quantified experimentally and theoretically. Our microscope provides a versatile solution for enabling high-fidelity in vivo voltage imaging at large scales and penetration depths, which we demonstrate across a wide range of imaging conditions and different GEVI classes. The Kondabolu Brothers discuss the newest Kondabolu, TMS magnet therapy, the lost art of tailoring, ice cream, and the sport of football a.k.a soccer.
"The Simpsons" will no longer use White actors to voice non-White characters, according to the show's producers."Moving forward, The Simpsons will no longer have white actors voice non-white characters," Fox spokesman Les Eisner said in a statement Friday.Over the three decades since the animated sitcom began, it has used White actors to play a number of non-White characters including Harry Shearer as Dr. Julius Hibbert and Hank Azaria as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. In January, Azaria announced he would stop voicing Apu after 30 years playing the thickly accented Indian-American character. Azaria is not South Asian."All we know there is I won't be doing the voice anymore, unless there's some way to transition it or something," Azaria said, according to /Film, an industry news blog that reported it had asked the actor about the matter after a discussion panel. The decision to remove Azaria from voicing Apu was mutual, the actor said, according to /Film. "We all agreed on it," he said. "We all feel like it's the right thing and good about it."The comedian Hari Kondabolu -- whose 2017 documentary, "The Problem with Apu," thrust controversy over the character into the mainstream -- reacted on Twitter saying that he hoped "The Simpsons" kept Apu and lets "a very talented writing staff do something interesting with him.""My documentary 'The Problem with Apu' was not made to get rid of a dated cartoon character, but to discuss race, representation & my community (which I love very much)," Kondabolu wrote. "It was also about how you can love something (like the Simpsons) & still be critical about aspects of it (Apu)."In his doc, Kondabolu interviewed celebrities of South Asian descent, including Aziz Ansari and Kal Penn, to discuss how characterizations like Apu can be viewed as racism. The show responded in an April 2018 episode to the backlash over Apu, who runs the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in TV's longest-running prime-time scripted series. In the episode, the young Lisa Simpson said, "Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?" Lisa then glanced at a framed photograph of Apu inscribed with the message, "Don't have a cow."Azaria later that month told the host of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" that he'd be happy to step aside from Apu and disagreed with how the show handled the criticism."The idea that anybody -- young or old, past or present -- was bullied or teased based on the character of Apu, it just really makes me sad," said Azaria, who voices other characters on the show."It was certainly not my intention," he said. "I wanted to spread laughter and joy with this character, and the idea that it's brought pain and suffering in any way, that it was used to marginalize people, it's upsetting."Meanwhile, Mike Henry has stepped down from playing the character Cleveland on "Family Guy," the latest in a slew of White actors abdicating roles voicing animated characters of colour.Henry, who also voiced the character on the now-cancelled "The Cleveland Show," made the announcement Friday evening on Twitter, writing that it's been an honour to play the character for 20 years."I love this character, but persons of colour should play characters of colour," he said. "Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role."

For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'Seventeenth Summer' by Maureen Daly, a 1942 novel considered by some the first YA novel. The protagonist of the book is fairly innocent and chaste, but our discussion of the book is neither. (I don't know, that's just how it turned out!) We also talk about em dashes and exclamation points. Our discussion includes spoilers, so you may wish to read the book before listening. Before you do that, though, we recommend checking out Daly's short story 'Sixteen', which was written the year before Seventeenth Summer, won an O. Henry Award, and has a similar flavor. It is included in various short story collections, and I also found a copy at http://racheli.tripod.com/winter/sixteen.html . In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Akata Witch' by Nnedi Okorafor, as recommended by Hayden of the They See Me Rollin podcast. Hari Kondabolu, comedian and star of The Problem With Apu (2017), joins UCSB’s Kum-Kum Bhavnani for a conversation about the film. Kondabolu reflects on what it means to retrospectively reexamine offensive stereotypes about race, culture, and forms of work, as well as the power of humor to disarm and dismantle them. Kondabolu and Bhavnani discuss at length how, rather than creatively being intended as hurtful or offensive, stereotypes can enter the cultural lexicon as struggling/tokenized forms of representation in cultures where there is otherwise none, or as a form of insensitive marketing of foreignness in and for a dominant culture, as well as the eventual dilemmas this can cause for the creators and the legacy of their works. The Kondabolu Brothers discuss spicy food, a bad cab ride they had from Queens to Brooklyn and how they should be more famous. Also, they have an exclusive interview with THEIR MOTHER (on her birthday).
Hari Kondabolu picked a good time to be a comedian. Thirty years ago there was no place for him in show business. And not only because he was just a newborn 30 years ago. In this episode, we deconstruct Hari and talk about progressive comedy, take apart controversial jokes (and tweets), and discuss the middle ground an ethnic comedian can take on stage.
The Kondabolu Brothers discuss the Superbowl, Vegan Doughnut shops, Ashok's Vitamin Manifesto, and Hari being mentioned in a Senate hearing about Benghazi. Also, we answers questions on Tumblr for the first time!
The Kondabolu Brothers' second podcast, live from Ashok's apartment in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Topics include the live and death of the Gowanus Dolphin, the time the brothers both auditioned for Iron Man 3, Ashok's experience filming an Adult Swim pilot and hatemail Hari received.
Hari Kondabolu is a highly-accomplished stand-up who discusses race and class in a manner that is both funny and enlightening. He's performed on numerous shows including Jimmy Kimmel, Live at Gotham and John Oliver's New York Standup Show. He has his own Comedy Central Presents special and hosts a live monthly talk show with his younger brother Ashok, a member of the hip hop group Das Racist. He also has academic roots and earned his Masters in Human Rights from the London School of Economics. A few weeks ago, Hari sat down with us in the hot, cat-filled Wrestling Team apartment to discuss NHL ‘96, hack jokes, mean people as the root of comedy, high school stand-up, Comedy Cellar soda, a tentative comedy career, writing politically with a punchline, silence and Manoj appearing years before Randy. Plus we debut our new segment “What's your pathology?”
Danny and Chris are joined on the Monday show by comedian Phoebe Robinson. Danny creates a fake Facebook page for Miracle on the Hudson pilot Sully and feels pangs of regret when people fall for the hoax. The crew argues over the blurry line between what constitutes an act of heroism and what hinges on sadism. Comedian Hari Kondabolu expresses his aversion to comic legend Jackie Mason and reveals he is against telling rape jokes, a major part of Chris’s repertoire. Matt McCarthy, the red-bearded Verizon guy, admits he is completely apathetic towards scones, and defends the honor of America against Danny, who questions the logic behind the Boston Tea Party-which he describes as a “waste of tea”-and the American Revolution as we know it. All this and much more on The Friday Show!
