The swift development, authorization and manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccines have been a remarkable scientific feat that conjures up the great stories of science achievement. While vaccines and vaccination are widely considered one of the great success stories in public health, they may also have become a victim of their own remarkable success; a success that can lead to complacency about the benefits of vaccination and a focus on the potential risks or side effects. These hesitations can compromise vaccination programs and leave populations susceptible to outbreaks—a situation where no one is truly safe, because not enough of us are vaccinated. We've seen remarkable progress in vaccine technology; however, progress in vaccine confidence and distribution, trust in science, and confidence in our institutions tell a different story. In this episode, we dive deep into the science of vaccines with Christine Grady, MSN, PhD; Ernest Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN; Jaquelin P Dudley, PhD; and Lori Boyle, MSN, AGPCNP. Together we discuss the ethics and details of clinical trials and vaccine distribution, and the role that nurses specifically play in developing vaccine confidence and innovating to rapidly and safely achieve mass COVID-19 vaccination To learn more, visit our website at www.seeyounowpodcast.com. In this solo episode, Adrianne shares her recent experience with getting her COVID-19 vaccination by reading her journal to you (with some edits, of course). She has a lot of strong opinions about the COVID vaccine and the way my state and country is handling this ongoing pandemic, but this isn’t that kind of episode. This is just her personal vaccine experience. She’s also releasing this as a blog with lots of links to things she mentions that are worth checking out. Please go and find it at nursinguncensored.com/blog/covidvax. On a related note, Adrianne is part of a new group of nurse podcasters who are recording roundtable-style podcasts - aptly named “The Nurse’s Roundtable”. You can find it on Spotify. The first episode is about COVID-19 and the vaccine. In that episode, they all share how they feel about the vaccine and whether or not they each plan to take it when offered.Like this episode? Part 1: Today we talk to Computational Epidemiologist & Virologist Chris van Csefalvay. He is a man of many talents, but in this interview, we focus on vaccinations. After the last interview with the online debunker @thereal_truther (check him out to get good solid info!), we were accused of not being experts. Which we of course never claimed. Ever. So, here is an interview with somebody who understands and can explain, in detail, how vaccines work, what they contain, and how they work on a physiological level. Equipped with this knowledge, we also go into the most regurgitated copy/paste tropes anti-vaxxers spew online. This is not something that has been done as expansive detail before as far as we know. Collectively, point by point, in scientific chemical explanation detail (ingredients, big pharma, sanitation, etc.), we make sure that your fears will prove unfounded or explained. This interview aims to appeal to those who have been made unsure due to the extreme anti-vaxx industry presence on the internet and their pervasive tactics. This is so you can understand and let the information be explained from someone who has skin in the game. We also cover the working of big pharma, mistakes in the industry, research, non-profit making and other themes.Note: Due to the depth and breadth of the subject matter, the interview had to be put into two parts. The next one will follow soon! You can follow Chris on twitter under his handle @chrisvcsefalvay and you can check out his website “Bits and Bugs” under www.chrisvoncsefalvay.com If you have any comments of ideas or suggestions, contact us in any of the ways below. The Prime Minister wants action on social media scare stories about MMR jabs and other vaccines after a rise in cases of measles
As we find ourselves in an ongoing measles outbreak, with news of vaccine hesitancy and skepticism on the rise, we look back this week to a true UNICEF visionary for inspiration. As UNICEF's executive director from 1980 to 1995, the late Jim Grant helped launch the child survival revolution that led to a massive leap in child immunization rates around the world. Adam Fifield, who chronicled Grant's life in the book "A Mighty Purpose," joins us to talk about how we can rally the public together and renew trust in vaccines.
