    That's Healthful Episode #85: Combating the Opioid Crisis – Substance Misuse & Addiction Resource for Tennessee Initiative Jeremy Kourvelas, SMART Substance Use Coordinator According to the CDC, a little over a million, people have died from a drug overdose since 1999. In 2020, approximately 75% of the overdose deaths were opioid involved. The opioids identified have been prescription opioids like fentanyl and that the majority of all overdoses both fatal and non-fatal involved multiple different drugs. The State of Tennessee is no stranger to opioid overdoses and deaths from opioid use. Join me for this episode with Jeremy Kourvelas, the program coordinator for the SMART (Substance Misuse and Addiction Resource for Tennessee) Initiative, part of the Institute for Public Service. More about Jeremy: Though he grew up in Memphis, Jeremy Kourvelas has spent over a decade in East Tennessee. After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor's in psychology, he spent more than four years in multiple emergency departments in Knox, Roane, Blount, and Claiborne counties as a medical scribe. Her research focuses on social determinants of health, health equity and disparities, and health outcomes in sexual and gender minority adolescent populations.Dr. Carroll earned her Bachelor's Degree in nursing in 2011 from the University of Alabama-Huntsville and her Master's Degree in nursing from the University of Memphis in 2013. She has clinical experience in pediatric intensive care and endocrinology and research expertise as a clinical research coordinator in pediatric allergy, immunology, and endocrinology. She received her PhD in 2018 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center for her dissertation titled “Health-Related Quality of Life of Female Children with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: A Mixed Methods Study.” Prior to assuming her faculty role, Dr. Carroll completed postdoctoral training at UTHSC.Dr. Carroll has received several small grants from organizations such as Sigma Theta Tau and the CARES Foundation. She is a member of Southern Nursing Research Society and Pediatric Endocrinology Nursing Society.     Grief & Bereavement with Dr. Susan Jacob Grief and bereavement are different for everyone. Join me for a conversation with Dr. Susan Jacob, Executive Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing as we talk about the grieving process. Dr. Jacob has studied grief and loss for over 30 years and has facilitated support groups to assist those in dealing with these experiences. She was instrumental in the development of Hospice in Memphis and received the key to the city of Memphis in 1980 as recognition for having done so. Dr. Jacob is well known for her research contributions in grief and bereavement and has received funding, both locally and nationally. More About Dr. Jacob:Susan R. Jacob received her BSN from West Virginia University, a Master of Science degree in Community Health Nursing from San Jose State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, Memphis - now known as the Health Science Center. Dr. Jacob has been a nursing educator for over thirty years, serving as a tenured professor on the faculties of the University of Memphis and Union University where she also served as Dean of the School of Nursing prior to serving as the Executive Associate Dean (2003-2011) and Interim Dean (2011-2012) in the UTHSC College of Nursing. Dr. Jacob retired from UTHSC in 2012 as Professor Emeritus in the College of Nursing and returned in November 2015 to assume the position of Professor and Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs until June 30, 2016. In September 2016 Dr. Jacob assumed the role of Interim Chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention until July 2017. In January 2017 she assumed the role of Interim Director of the BSN program until June 2018 when she was appointed Assistant Dean of Quality and Strategic Affairs. Dr. Jacob also currently serves as Executive Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.Dr. Jacob has extensive experience in the area of curriculum development and teaching/learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She serves as a team lead evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and a curriculum/accreditation consultant for colleges of nursing. She is co-author/co-editor with Barbara Cherry of Contemporary Nursing: Issues, Trends, and Management, Elsevier's leading Nursing Issues textbook in its 8th edition, and the author of numerous book chapters and journal articles. According to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, in 2020, 21% of adults in the United States experienced mental illness, that's one in five or almost 53 million. One out of every six between the ages of 6 and 17 experience a mental health disorder. Mental health and mental illness are frequently underreported. Those who suffer from Mental illness are 40% more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.     National Stroke Awareness Month – May 2022Dr. Anne Alexandrov May is National Stroke Awareness Month. According to the CDC, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke, and every 3 and a half minutes, someone dies from a stroke. Today, my guest is a recognized clinical expert in the areas of emergency and critical care with concentrations in neuroscience and vascular dynamics, Dr. Anne Alexandrov. Dr. Alexandrov is considered to be the leading international nursing expert in acute stroke management. More About Dr. AlexandrovDr. Anne Alexandrov, Ph.D., RN, AGACNP-BC, ANVP-BC, NVRN-BC, ASC-BC, CCRN, FAAN, is a Professor of both Nursing and Neurology, as well as the Mobile Stroke Unit Chief Nurse Practitioner at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. She is also Professor and Program Director for NET SMART (www.learnstroke.com) at the Health Outcomes Institute, LLC in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Dr. Alexandrov received her MSN from the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) at Houston in 1993 with a concentration in Emergency and Critical Care. She received her Ph.D. from Texas Woman's University in 2002, which focuses on integrated systemic and intracranial hemodynamics. Dr. Alexandrov is the President of the Association of Neurovascular Clinicians and serves as Certification Examination Architect for the Neurovascular Registered Nurse, Advanced Stroke Coordinator, the Certified Neurointerventional Clinician, and Advanced Neurovascular Practitioner board certifications. She currently serves on the Board of Directors as Treasurer of the Prehospital Stroke Treatment Organization (PRESTO), an international organization for mobile stroke units. Dr. Alexandrov was the FY-2000 National President of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) and a former member of the American Stroke Association's (ASA) Executive Leadership Board (2005-2007). She Co-Chaired the National Quality Forum's Stroke Committee that selected the first round of evidence-based core measures for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) endorsement/pay-for-performance from 2007-2009. Dr. Alexandrov developed the reviewer role for The Joint Commission's (TJC) Stroke Center Certification Program and has served on both the Technical Advisory Panel for TJC's Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification program and the TJC Stroke Performance Measure Panel. She has authored almost 200 original scientific publications related to her work in stroke reperfusion therapies, experimental blood flow augmentation strategies, and stroke systems of care, and co-holds a U.S. patent for ultrasound-enhanced thrombolysis and perfusion. Dr. Alexandrov's many honors include the 2022 Distinguished Research Lecturer for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the 2019 American Association of Nurse Practitioner's Tennessee Nurse Practitioner Excellence Award, the 2018 Memphis Healthcare Hero Award, the 2013 American Association of Critical-Care Nurses' Flame of Excellence Award for her work in acute stroke, induction as an Honorary Ambassador to the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses in 2012, the UAB Graduate School Dean's Excellence in Mentorship Award in 2012, the Birmingham Metro Nurse of the Year Award in 2010, induction as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2004, the ASA's Distinguished Service Award in 2003, the American Heart Association's Stroke Manuscript of the Year Award in 2003, the ASA Texas Affiliate's Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award in 2002, and the John P.
