This week, the BiG Scuba Duo, Gemma and Ian chat to Nick Schiller. Nick is a keen lover of being on and under the water. He is a sidemount diver and an assistant BSAC instructor. He has dived extensively in the UK as well as Egypt, Iceland, Mexico and Tobago. He loves diving with a scooter and is keen on helping people out removing tarpaulins, ropes, etc form props, searching for mobile phones and wedding rings. So that's how he got involved with S32 - a phone call "could you just come and inspect a sunken WW2 air sea rescue boat for us?" - a year later and Nick is very involved in trying to save the MASB S32 Whaleback. He is currently, taking a break from diving as a result of the accident on Sea Palling beach involving a boat but ready to return to diving next year. “I think that the comparison [between political and erotic passions] is related to the danger of transgressing boundaries from the side of the analyst. It's not totally the same, but it's because of the emotions and the danger of being too much involved as an analyst, if you don't pay attention to what is happening in ourselves with our own emotions, then it can be similar. I think both are important for the psychoanalytic process, to see it as a real relationship - there is this setting where two people in the room meet. They are real persons, but at the same time, a kind of dramatic play fantasy creation coming up from fantasies of the patient, and our own reactions as analysts come into play and gradually just build up the story that is mainly related to the patient's biography, the patient's relationships, and what's going on in her or his life at the moment, but now in relation with us.” Episode Description: We recognize the passionate political world we are living in and the challenges it introduces into the psychoanalytic relationship. Such moments of intense personal conviction challenge the clinician's capacity to hold those convictions, allow the same for the analysand and still locate an analytic surface with which to find additional meanings. Heribert feels that this creates opportunities for intensity akin to "erotic-sexual impulses." He discusses clinical encounters that include his "revealing my assessment of reality" as an aspect of his authentic self living in relation to the patient. He presents the case of a young man whose effort to locate his analyst's "soft spot" entailed provoking him with his idealization of Hitler. Unlike the patient's father who turned away from him at such times, his analyst tolerated "my required countertransference" which enabled the patient to recognize and tolerate his tender longings that had lived disguised in his sado-masochistic preoccupations. Short term weight loss sounds great BUT it's not all fat – it's muscle! Muscle will be much harder to regain as we age because of anabolic resistance.. Clothes might feel loose and you get weight loss compliments. But short term weight loss is just giving a “false positive” honeymoon period. This might mean you divorced muscle, the love of your life. 1. Muscle Mass Loss (Sarcopenia) Protein Deficiency Protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle tissue. Insufficient protein intake exacerbates muscle atrophy and increases the risk of falls and injuries. Excessive Cardio Prolonged cardio can lead to a breakdown of muscle tissue for energy, particularly if glycogen stores are depleted. This can worsen age-related muscle loss and counteract maintaining strength and function. 2. Bone Health (Osteoporosis) Protein Deficiency Protein is needed for bone health and bone density. Inadequate protein intake, especially after menopause, increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Osteoporosis Risks After menopause, risk of osteoporosis increases due to declining estrogen levels and can weaken bones prone to fracture. Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis Link Having both increases the risk of falls and fractures. Poor nutrition leads to sarcopenic obesity and increases the risk of osteoporosis. 3. Other Negative Effects Reduced Physical Function Since inadequate protein leads to muscle loss, this reduces strength, impaired balance, and decreased ability to perform daily activities. Slow-Healing Injuries Protein repairs tissues. Deficiency can slow wound healing and recovery from injuries. Weakened Immune Function Amino acids from protein build antibodies and maintain a healthy immune system. Low protein intake can lead to frequent illnesses and infections. Potential Cardiac Issues (Excessive Cardio) Associated with potential adverse cardiac effects, such as myocardial fibrosis and an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, in some individuals. Musculoskeletal Injuries (Excessive Cardio) Increases the risk of musculoskeletal issues like osteoarthritis and stress fractures. What Can You Do Instead of A Short Term Weight Loss Recommendations: Prioritize protein intake with 30 grams each meal. Balance cardio and strength training to build and maintain muscle mass. Listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard or engaging in prolonged, strenuous exercise if it causes excessive fatigue or pain. Dr Michael Lange and Roger P Schulman hosted the longest running live medical talk show called "ask the dr" today on July 5th, 2025. Topic today was, can specific nutrients help reverse dementia & slow down age-related muscle loss called sarcopenia? They started off discussing protective eye wear for everyone. They also discussed how important an eye exam is before kids start back to school. New research shows that Norwegian Vikings were buried with 50 times more weapons—and had a lot more injuries—than their neighbours in Denmark. And there were other dramatic differences that researchers were able to uncover, even after the passage of more than a thousand years.This episode digs into what those differences might mean. As soon as he gets to the bottom of it, we'll share it here.In the meantime, here's what Bill found when he asked DeepSeek: Crocodiles, like many other marine and estuarine reptiles, have specialized salt glands to help them excrete excess salt from their bodies. These glands, known as salt glands or lingual glands (located on their tongues), actively transport salt ions (primarily sodium and chloride) from their bloodstream into the gland ducts. The salt is then excreted as a concentrated saline solution, which is expelled from the body.Crocodiles do not chemically change the salt (sodium chloride) into something else. Instead, they filter and concentrate it, allowing them to maintain proper electrolyte balance in their bodies, especially when living in saltwater environments.
