With a computer programming background and an instinct for reporting, Malachy Browne is on the vanguard of a new form of data-driven news coverage that is revitalizing journalism.Co-founder and enterprise director of the New York Times Visual Investigations team, Malachy is pioneering the use of digital sleuthing, collecting and analyzing troves of video and audio, satellite images and other data, and creating 3-D reconstructions of crime scenes and geopolitical events to hold the powerful to account and deconstruct important news events. These efforts have earned two Pulitzer Prizes, an Emmy, and other top-tier accolades for Malachy and his team. Not bad for a Limerick lad from the village of Broadford, population 276!He'd earn his master's in international relations at the University of Limerick after getting his bachelor's degree in engineering at University College Dublin.Malachy tells of navigating between his core computer competency and his journalistic instincts (which he “blames” on his uncle, the legendary journalist Vincent Browne) which would lead him to Storyful, where he'd collaborate with past guests Mark Little, David Clinch, and others in creating the emerging innovative data-driven style of reporting.Join us for an inside look at the way Malachy and his team are telling the world's most critical stories—from the Arab Spring to the January 6th Insurrection—in an entirely new way. Malachy Browne LinksX/TwitterFacebookLinkedInNew York Times LinksVisual InvestigationsMalachy BrowneDay of Rage: How Trump Supporters Took the U.S. Capitol

My special guest is a man you will probably have seen and heard many times on Ireland's biggest TV and radio shows – but not for a few years now. Constantin Gurdgiev was one of a group of what you might call ‘celebrity economists' who became the new rock n roll stars during the recession – Constantin is Russian, very slick, very intelligent and I used to portray him as a kind of bond villain on Today FM's Gift Grub and on Vincent Browne's show on TV3.Constantin has been living in the US for the last few years and I wanted to catch up with him to hear what its like being Russian in the US right now with all that's going on, what life is like for his friends and family back in Russia and what impact these sanctions we hear so much about are really having on day to day life there, and of course his insights into Putin and the Russian psyche. Constantin is also fascinating when he explains why he stopped being a guest on ‘traditional‘ media platforms like radio and TV and now only does longer form content like podcasts and deep dive print articles.COMEDY:It was the big talking point of the week, Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, and that was the inspiration for this episode's brand new and exclusive comedy sketch, guest starring Al Foran. We managed to get exclusive access to Chris Rock's voicemails – you wouldn't believe the host of stars that have dropped him a message of support…Hope you enjoy this oneMarioAl Foran's new podcast is HEREhttps://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comSend a whatsappp message or voicenote to the hotline on 087 2685459The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

As we examine how voter sentiment may potentially alter the landscape of Irish politics this weekend, what that sentiment boils down to is not just change, but radical change, and change that is directed towards what can be broadly described as the left, although we absolutely know that the traditional binaries by which we measure and describe the ideological spectrum of politics keep shifting and have changed a lot in recent years. There’s one particular journalist whose trademark is speaking truth to power, interrogating corruption, making establishment politicians cower in fear, and more broadly a journalist who is steered by a sense of equality, fairness and justice in Irish society. We knew that this was the man we wanted to be talking to this week about what is actually now happening in Irish society, the context, the causes, and the potential outcome. We’re delighted to welcome in studio Vincent Browne.
