SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 382, “Turning Points in History,” Kim discusses how turning points in history affect us, whether they be personal turning points or those of nations. In today's text, we see a turning point in the history of the nation of Israel: the fall of Jerusalem. God had consistently sent His prophets, especially Jeremiah, to warn the people of the consequences they would experience for their sinful lifestyles, but they refused to heed the warnings. May we learn from their bad choices, as well as our own turning points, and live lives wholly surrendered to the Lord.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 25:1-21 and 2 Chronicles 36:17-21, with 2 Chronicles 36:17-21 as the focal verses:   17 So the Lord brought the king of Babylon against them. The Babylonians killed Judah's young men, even chasing after them into the Temple. They had no pity on the people, killing both young men and young women, the old and the infirm. God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar. 18 The king took home to Babylon all the articles, large and small, used in the Temple of God, and the treasures from both the Lord's Temple and from the palace of the king and his officials. 19 Then his army burned the Temple of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem, burned all the palaces, and completely destroyed everything of value. 20 The few who survived were taken as exiles to Babylon, and they became servants to the king and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power. 21 So the message of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah was fulfilled. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 381, “Defining Moment vs. Moment of Defiance,” Kim discusses the similarities and differences between King Zedekiah of Judah and Samson. Both leaders had opportunities in the midst of great adversity to cry out to God, but only one used his voice to beg God to intervene. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 379, “Refusing to Humble Oneself,” Kim discusses the last king of Judah and some lessons listeners can learn from his bad choices. This is the first in a mini-series on the Fall of Jerusalem and the insights we can glean from what led to its consequences. Sadly, Zedekiah seemed like a fitting king to be on the throne as the last bits of the once God-fearing nation are taken into captivity for the evil lives they chose to live and the carnage they left in their wake.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 36:11-16 and Jeremiah 37:1-10, with 2 Chronicles 36:12-13 and Jeremiah 37:2 and 37:17 as the focal verses:   12 But Zedekiah did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God, and he refused to humble himself when the prophet Jeremiah spoke to him directly from the Lord. 13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, even though he had taken an oath of loyalty in God's name. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 378, “Stone Cold Response to the Word of the Lord,” Kim discusses the dangers of allowing our hearts to be hardened to God's Word. Recently, we examined the tender heart of King Josiah and how hearing God's Word changed him and how he led. This week, we see that his son Jehoiakim's heart was as hard as Josiah's was tender. How tender or hard is your heart to God's Word?   Our focal passage for this episode is Jeremiah 36:1-32, with 21-25 as the focal verses:   21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought it from Elishama's room and read it to the king as all his officials stood by. 22 It was late autumn, and the king was in a winterized part of the palace, sitting in front of a fire to keep warm. 23 Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king took a knife and cut off that section of the scroll. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 377, “God Can Speak in Unexpected Ways,” Kim discusses the dangers of Christ-followers trying to limit how the Lord can speak to them. We see that in today's scriptures as King Josiah refuses to believe God would be speaking through an enemy king, and it cost him his life. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 375, “Choosing to Respond to God's Word,” Kim discusses the importance of surrendering to the power of God's Word to change you. So many times, we approach God's Word without opening our hearts and minds to be changed by what we find there. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 369, “For All Who Think They Are Too Far Gone,” Kim discusses King Manasseh and the miraculous turn his life took. He went from leading others down one of the darkest paths imaginable to humbly surrendering to the Lord. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 367, “You Can Bid on This Showcase,” Kim discusses the dangers of mistaken objects and people as our property instead of as ours to steward for the Lord. In today's scriptures, King Hezekiah looked as though he were the host of the ancient version of the game show “The Price Is Right.” He had moved from being grateful for all the Lord had placed in his path to acting as though he were the owner. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 366, “Proper Response to a Move of God,” Kim discusses the multiple movements of God that King Hezekiah experienced and how we can learn from his response. During the first part of his reign, Hezekiah saw God move in his people and on their behalf, and Hezekiah consistently pointed the people to God and gave him glory. Yet, sadly, as time went on, instead of using what the Lord was doing as opportunities to point to the greatness of God, Hezekiah became proud. This story, as well as next week's, should challenge each of us to be intentional about remembering where the glory goes.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 32:24-26, with 25 as the focal verse:   24 About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 365, “Time Truly Is in God's Hands,” Kim discusses the request of King Hezekiah for more time. Hezekiah was approached by the prophet Isaiah and told he was going to die and to get his affairs in order. Hezekiah did not panic but immediately turned to the Lord and poured out his pain and preference. The Lord chose to provide a miracle of more time, but also a miracle of growth in Hezekiah, who stated, “This anguish was good for me.” The Lord doesn't always answer our request for more time in the way we think He should, but we can be comforted knowing time is still in His control, and He can help us make the most of every moment given.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 20:1-11, with 2-3 as the focal verses:   2 When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 “Remember, O Lord, how I have always been faithful to you and have served you single-mindedly, always doing what pleases you.” Then he broke down and wept bitterly.     WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE:   Have you ever prayed for more time? SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 364, “Crying Out in Prayer to God,” Kim discusses the incident in 2 Chronicles 32:20 when King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah cried out to the Lord on behalf of the people of Judah. We all encounter times of extreme danger, pain, and concern, when a guttural cry is the only kind of prayer we can utter. People come to Nashville from all over the world to make country music. Rissi Palmer is one of the many. But she's also one of the few — one of the few to ever crack the Billboard country charts, and fewer still to do it as a Black woman.Nearly two decades ago, “Country Girl” announced her to the world. The song was a declaration that you don't have to be from Arkansas or speak with a drawl to belong in country music. She had a line in there that touched on race, too. Her label made her take it out.A lot has changed since then — and a lot hasn't. Country music is still working out who gets to belong, who gets to be heard, and who gets to tell their own story without compromise. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 363, “Idols I Need to Smash,” Kim discusses how when someone meets with the Lord, they cannot remain the same. In today's primary text, the people of Judah and some from Israel had celebrated the Passover for the first time in their lifetimes. Immediately, they smashed multiple different idols. When the prophet Isaiah saw the Lord, he immediately saw how sinful he and the people were, and the Lord graciously forgave and then commissioned him to speak on His behalf. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 361, “Restored to Service,” Kim discusses the dedication of the Temple as described in 2 Chronicles 7 and the path that led to the rededication in 2 Chronicles 29. God knew the people would not stay 100% on fire for him and he gave Solomon a restoration plan from the beginning: 14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land (2 Chronicles 7:14). About 250 years later, spiritual darkness has invaded the land and King Hezekiah leads the people in the restoration process, including purifying and rededicating the temple.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 29:18-36, with 28-29 and 35b-36 as the focal verses:   28 The entire assembly worshiped the Lord as the singers sang and the trumpets blew, until all the burnt offerings were finished. 29 Then the king and everyone with him bowed down in worship.    So the Temple of the Lord was restored to service. 36 And Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because of what God had done for the people, for everything had been accomplished so quickly.     WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE:   For Christ-followers, the “temple of the Holy Spirit” is contained within our bodies. King Hezekiah walked into an absolute mess, and he set out to right the proverbial ship. He wanted to renew the people side of the covenant with the Lord. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 357, “The Primary Element of Proper Worship,” Kim discusses the story in 2 Kings 17 where a priest was brought back to Samaria from captivity to teach the new residents how to worship the Lord. Yet, either he left out the part that they had to worship the Lord only, OR the people thought they could continue their cafeteria approach to worship and just add the worship of this god to their menu. Big mistake! SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 356, “Becoming Whom You Worship,” Kim discusses the importance of choosing wisely what or whom we devote our reverence, focus, and energy. In today's passage, we see that the idolatrous Israelites' worship of worthless idols led to them becoming like what they worshipped. Yet, just as worshipping an unworthy object can turn us into what we worship, we can also become more like Christ when we choose to bow down and worship Him.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 17:5-15, with 15 as the focal verse:   15 They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors, and they despised all his warnings. They worshiped worthless idols, so they became worthless themselves. In today's text, we see the story of someone who did evil, but his evil was not as bad as others. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 354, “No One Can Keep You from God,” Kim discusses the attempt of King Ahaz to shut down all access to God. Kim encourages listeners who are Christ-followers to celebrate their eternal access to God. Because of our great High Priest, we can go boldly to God…but do we?   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 28:20-27, with 22-25 as the focal verses:   22 Even during this time of trouble, King Ahaz continued to reject the Lord. 23 He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus who had defeated him, for he said, “Since these gods helped the kings of Aram, they will help me, too, if I sacrifice to them.” But instead, they led to his ruin and the ruin of all Judah. 24 The king took the various articles from the Temple of God and broke them into pieces. He shut the doors of the Lord's Temple so that no one could worship there, and he set up altars to pagan gods in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 He made pagan shrines in all the towns of Judah for offering sacrifices to other gods. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 353, “When God Humbles You,” Kim discusses the choices we make daily, either to humble ourselves before God or experience consequences orchestrated by God to humble us. In today's text, we encounter the latest events in the life and rule of King Ahaz of Judah. Kim shared the sentiment of a song written about 20 years ago that showed what it might look like when someone imitates another's not so honorable behaviors, but also how the imitation of healthy behaviors might look. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 349, “Be Careful to Live in Obedience to God,” Kim discusses the difference between the legacies of the kings Uzziah and his son Jotham.
