Working on a remote tropical island in the Atlantic might sound like some sort of romantic idyll - but trying to conduct scientific research on a windy, isolated volanic outcrop is no picnic, as Lucy Carpenter can attest! Lucy is an atmopsheric chemist and a Professor at the University of York, whose work has helped to transform understanding of how oceans shape the air above them. She was one of the founding scientists behind the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory, established on São Vicente in 2006 and now a key global monitoring site. Measurements made there helped overturn a long-standing assumption: ozone loss is not solely a human-made problem. Lucy and her colleagues showed that gases released by natural marine processes can trigger chemical reactions that destroy ozone - demonstrating that the sea is not simply a passive backdrop to climate change but an active participant; affecting aerosols, clouds and ultimately the climate itself. More recently Lucy's expertise has taken her into the policy arena, co-chairing the scientific assessment panel for the Montreal Protocol: the international agreement designed to protect the ozone layer. In conversation with Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Lucy discusses her journey from sampling ocean air to turning the tide of global environmental policy - and explains why her passion for duathlons could arguably be seen as an easier pastime than scientific research.

The Earth's magnetic field makes compasses work so that Boy Scouts don't get lost in the woods and ships arrive at the correct port. It actually moves over time. This means that navigators periodically need updated information on the position of the pole for their charts. Many people have the idea that the Earth's magnetic field moves very slowly. The Earth's magnetic field actually offers some of the clearest evidences that the Earth is young. Geophysicists recently reported that the north magnetic pole has moved 800 kilometers northwest of where it was in 1904. That's a much faster rate of movement than many people imagined. Its speed and direction of movement are about what was expected by geophysicists, however. They also report that the magnetic pole has moved as much as 80 kilometers in one day.Measurements taken over the last 150 years show that the Earth's magnetic field is decaying. When Christ walked the hills of Palestine, the magnetic field was twice as powerful as it is today. The Earth is much more dynamic and changeable than most people, including many scientists, think. These rapid changes in the position of the magnetic pole and the rapid decay of the magnetic field offer evidence that the Earth is much younger than many people think. One of the world's best known experts has shown that the decaying magnetic field means that the Earth could not be much older than the Bible's genealogies indicate.Job 26:7" He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.”Prayer: Lord, the blessings of modern travel rely on Your gift of to us of the Earth's magnetic field. I also thank You for the beauty of the northern and southern lights that is created by the magnetic field. Amen.REF.: "News of Magnetic Poles." Science News, Vol. 128. RMS Measurements & Sloped Ceilings Explained | Alberta Real Estate Exam Prep How do sloped ceilings affect RMS measurements in Alberta? This is a highly tested measurement concept on the Alberta real estate licensing exam — and it can be confusing if you don't understand the two-step rule. In this video from The Alberta Real Estate School, we break down RMS height requirements clearly and simply. Here's what you must remember: Step 1: The 7-Foot Rule To include any space in Residential Measurement Standard (RMS) calculations, there must be at least 7 feet of ceiling height somewhere in the room. If the ceiling is flat, this means it's 7 feet throughout. Step 2: The 5-Foot Rule for Sloped Ceilings If the ceiling is sloped: • There must still be at least one area that reaches 7 feet • You may only include floor area where the ceiling height is 5 feet or higher • Any area below 5 feet is excluded from RMS measurements So in an attic-style room with sloped ceilings: You measure from where the ceiling reaches 7 feet and include space down to where it drops to 5 feet. Anything below 5 feet does not count toward RMS square footage. This topic is critical for: • Practice of Residential Real Estate • Alberta real estate licensing exams (RECA) • Measurement questions • Avoiding square footage misrepresentation • Listing accuracy Understanding RMS properly protects you legally and ensures compliance when advertising square footage. At The Alberta Real Estate School, we simplify technical exam concepts so you don't lose easy marks. Subscribe for weekly Alberta real estate exam tips and licensing breakdowns. Send us Fan MailIf you've ever wondered why two “good” hearing aid fittings can feel wildly different to a patient, the answer usually isn't the device, it's the process. I'm joined by Madison Levine, BC-HIS and owner of Levine Hearing in Charlotte, and Dr. Dave Fabry, Chief Hearing Health Officer at Starkey, for a practical conversation about best practices in hearing health care that actually improve patient outcomes. We get specific about what belongs in a modern best-practice toolkit: strong case history and counseling, real ear measurement (REM) for verification, and speech-in-noise testing (like QuickSIN) that matches how people struggle in the real world. Dave explains his REM goals (smooth real ear aided response, three input levels, MPO sweeps, LDL/UCL) and why “hitting target” is a starting line, not the finish. Madison shares how her clinic bakes verification and outcome measures into the workflow without slowing the day down, and how data logging turns follow-ups into smarter, calmer conversations. We also dig into innovation, including how immersive sound simulation with systems like Inventis Symphonia can help demonstrate noise features, personalize settings, and validate a patient's experience. Along the way we touch on the ear-brain connection, motivation for first-time users, and what to implement tomorrow if you can only change one thing.Subscribe for more conversations on hearing loss, hearing aids, audiology best practices, and better communication, then share this episode with a colleague and leave a review with your biggest takeaway.Visit our website and take our quick online hearing screener. And if you're ready to take the next step, our online hearing care provider locator can help you find a trusted hearing care professional near you. Who Makes the Calls in Allen Park Now? Episode 603 of the Detroit Lions Podcast opens with the question hanging over Allen Park. With Rod Wood retiring, who is steering football decisions day to day? The show lays out a direct agenda: assess the cap, sprint through free agency priorities, and prep for the NFL Scouting Combine. The timing matters. Combine week concentrates information, from personnel whispers to process checks. That is where clarity on roles can sharpen. The show centers the concern without panic. The operations list is long. Football choices cannot stall. The Lions have a window to align budgets, targets, and evals before Indy. Rod Wood's Legacy and Ford Field's Staying Power The conversation traces Wood's arc with the Detroit Lions. He worked for the Ford family in one form or another for almost thirty years, with roughly twenty more in investment banking before that. His tenure with the team dates to 2015, the Jim Caldwell era, marked by mediocrity and dead cap. He was involved in the Patricia decision, though he was not the decision maker. The organization even brought in outside counsel, including Ernie Coursey, to shape that process. Wood's imprint shows in concrete ways. Ford Field remains a viable venue, even as it nears thirty years and sits among the NFL's ten oldest stadiums. Built in the late 1990s and opened in 2000 or 2001, it still works because it improved. That is part of Wood's legacy. He also pushed to end an outlier status in Allen Park by securing the Meeks sponsorship for the training facility. The league had moved in that direction. Detroit aligned. Cap Outlook, Free Agency Sprint, Combine Plan The episode maps the near-term workload. First, clarify the Detroit Lions cap picture. Then hit a sprint through free agency to set tiers and timelines. Finally, lock in combine prep. Measurements, interviews, and positional benchmarks drive the board. The show frames Indy as the place to learn not only about prospects, but also about how the league values the Lions roster and decision makers right now. Every day lost before the combine is costly. The Lions need decisions on structure so scouts, coaches, and execs move in sync. That is the task list before wheels up. Why Indy Matters for the Detroit Lions Indy concentrates the NFL. It is where schedules stack, meals turn into meetings, and league perception reveals itself. The hosts emphasize that they learn more there about how the league perceives the Detroit Lions than any other week outside free agency and the draft. That intel feeds back into cap choices, free agency targets, and how to deploy limited time with prospects. Even the small stuff surfaces, from stadium quirks to fan experience notes. A rancid ketchup complaint gets a laugh, but it underlines a core point. Details and decisions both define a franchise. With Rod Wood stepping away, clarity on who makes the football calls is priority one as Detroit heads to the combine. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #rodwood #allenpark #fordfield #jimcaldwellera #patriciadecision #erniecoursey #meekssponsorship #salarycap #freeagencysprint #combineprep #indy #leagueperceivesthelions #episode603 #fordfamily Learn more about your ad choices. InBody and body composition testingToday's conversation is all about data, awareness, and empowerment — not obsession. We're diving into a tool that's becoming more popular in the health and wellness space: InBody and body composition testing. You've probably heard about it, maybe even done a scan yourself… but the real question is, how should we actually be using this information in our health journey — especially as we head into 2026?This is a hot topic right now, and I wanted to break it down in a way that feels grounding, not overwhelming. What does body composition really tell us? What does it not tell us? And how can this tool support long-term health, instead of pulling us back into scale anxiety or perfectionism? That's why I'm so excited to have today's guest with me — a true professional who can help us separate helpful insight from unnecessary noise. My hope is that by the end of this conversation, you'll feel more confident using body composition as a guide, not a judge, and more equipped to make decisions that actually support your health in this next season.---------------------------------------------------------------------Connect with Lindsey House:   • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com   • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1   • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/houselifestyles

New Year's Eve always comes with that familiar urge to clean the slate, toss out what didn't hold up, and keep what actually earned its place. That's basically the spirit of our latest “What's New in Science” episode with Sabine Hossenfelder. We began with the season's favorite shiny object: wormholes. The headlines have been everywhere, but we talked through why most of these stories quietly slide from “a speculative tool in a model” to “a virtual phenomenon that might be useful in calculations.” Traversable wormholes of course still run straight into hard constraints like negative energy and the time machine problem. From there we moved to something much more grounded: CERN. ATLAS has now observed the Higgs decaying into muon pairs, which is exactly the kind of precise confirmation you want for the Standard Model, and while it is yet another remarkable confirmation of how well the fundamental feature of the Standard Model works, it once again sharpens the contrast with the inexplicable nature of the only feature that doesn't seem to fit: neutrino masses. And it leaves us hanging about where to look next.We next spent time on what the future might look like for big particle collider projects and what it says about the field's priorities, including the signal sent by China's latest five-year plan, which no longer features a massive circular collider proposal. We touched on a smaller CERN result as well, and used it to reflect on a broader point: some of the most stubborn, interesting physics lives in regimes that are messy rather than glamorous. Then we took a quick detour into a quantum gravity-adjacent proposal about whether the way we average quantities in general relativity could matter for quantum corrections, and finally landed on a genuinely satisfying closer: OSIRIS-REx's Bennu samples. Finding ribose alongside other prebiotic building blocks makes it harder to dismiss the idea that the chemistry of life might be widespread, and not a once-only cosmic fluke.I hope you enjoy the episode, and I hope you're welcoming the new year surrounded by friends and family. Detroit Lions Podcast: OT Draft Fits for the Lions November Draft Lens From the Detroit Lions Podcast It is late November and the Detroit Lions conversation already includes the NFL Draft. Playoff expectations sit high, but roster building never sleeps. The focus here is offensive tackle. Four names came up. Three look like fits for Detroit. One does not. Two earned deep dives, and both would impact the trenches in different ways. The Lions value athletic thresholds, positional movement skills, and verified testing. Measurements matter. So does tape that shows recovery, spatial control, and finish. Day 1 versus Day 2 will hinge on those numbers. Early Day 2 is a sweet spot if the board and need align. Brad Holmes has shown a willingness to maneuver when a specific player matches the profile. Caleb Tiernan's Decker-Style Fit at Left Tackle Caleb Tiernan of Northwestern checks boxes that tie directly to Taylor Decker's role. He is a left tackle with real experience and Detroit roots at Country Day. He carries a big frame at six foot seven and 329 pounds. The size looks honest. The game reflects it. Tiernan is not the smoothest mover, but he is coordinated and functional. He gets into space, engages, and finishes. He uses his length well and fires his hands with improving placement. If he loses early, he knows how to recover. That ability shows on film and matters on Sundays. The profile reads leader with grit and snarl. The style echoes Decker's steady control more than twitchy flash. On consensus boards he sits near 62. On a sharper internal board he ranks 39. That places him squarely in the second round. For the Detroit Lions, that screams early Day 2 consideration. It might be earlier than their natural slot, which invites the familiar question about moving up. Athletic testing will be important. He is the least athletic of the discussed quartet, but not a bad athlete. If the numbers clear Detroit's benchmarks, the fit stays strong. Blake Miller's Surge and a Right Tackle Contrast Blake Miller of Clemson brings a different energy. A four-year starter at right tackle with a small taste of left tackle, he is an ascending talent. The tape this season is the best he has played. Footwork pops. Hips and shoulders sync. He keeps his feet alive and wins in space. He seals corners. He down blocks with force. The athletic profile is real and functional in the open field. Miller's arc shifted from a summer fifth or sixth round projection to a top-20 grade on that same internal board. Consensus has him near 65. The weight is the pivot. He was listed at 295 in spring. He is pushing 300 now. If he hits 305 to 310 by the combine, first round is on the table. The style differs from Penei Sewell. Miller is more speed and space than pure power. That contrast can work in Detroit's ecosystem. Two tackles. Two lanes to upgrade depth and plan succession. As the Detroit Lions press forward, the offensive line remains the identity. The draft will offer answers at left tackle and right tackle. The board already hints at where to look. #DetroitLions #Lions #DetroitLionsPodcast #CalebTiernan #BlakeMiller #TaylorDecker #PeneiSewell #LeftTackle #RightTackle #EarlyDay2 #FirstRoundOnTheTable #AthleticThresholds #PositionalMovementSkills Learn more about your ad choices.
