Back to Basics: Why Do We Pray? - Rev. Donnell T. Wyche - a2vc.org. Like us on fb.com/vineyardannarbor or watch our livestream Sundays @ 10:45am - vimeo.com/annarborvineyard Summary: Pastor Donnell explores the question "Why Do We Pray?" through an engaging and personal approach, beginning with the intriguing observation that Jesus' disciples had to specifically ask him to teach them to pray. With characteristic warmth and humor, he introduces the concept that prayer is "appetite-driven" – not something forced upon us, but rather an invitation that awakens something deep within us as God patiently waits for us to acknowledge our need for connection.   Through three main themes drawn from Psalm 139, Pastor Donnell illustrates that we pray because we are fully known, because God is with us, and to be transformed. He emphasizes a particularly powerful point: not only does God love us, but God likes us just as we are. Using personal stories, including one about his grandmother Pearl who wouldn't let go of a hug until she knew her love had been fully received, Pastor Donnell paints a picture of a God who accepts us completely, even in our anxiety, fears, and imperfections.   The sermon culminates in exploring how prayer serves as a transformative practice, but not in the way many might expect. Rather than focusing on correct words or postures, Pastor Donnell describes transformation as something that happens when we finally let our guard down in God's presence – similar to the way we relax with someone we've learned to trust. He concludes with a practical evening prayer exercise, while humorously adding that if people don't want God to answer and reveal truths about themselves, they might want to pray instead: "God, keep me ignorant of my ways. Don't reveal any truths to me today. Just let me know you love me instead."

Most of us are familiar with the ways our phones can be detrimental to our spiritual lives. But how often do we consider ways they can be of spiritual benefit? Listen as Alasdair Groves talks about how smartphones can actually enrich our relationship with God.   “My phone was pointing me directly to the glories and the riches and the treasures of God's promises to us, fulfilled so directly and so richly through the Holy Spirit, even in things as simple as what I was doing as I swiped or scrolled or sent a text or did a hundred other things that we do every day.”   Related resources: “Why Do We Pray?” blog post by David Powlison “Eyes That See More” blog post by Ed Welch

WELCOME to The WELLNESS FOURplay Podcast Episode 30: The Power of Prayer We KNOW that Knowledge is the “foreplay” to your Wellness, so we want to make sure you are equipped to optimize yours!  1. WHAT IS PRAYER? A solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to a higher power. A conversation between you and your creator that includes you talking and, through meditation, listening. 2. WHO ARE WE TALKING TO WHEN WE PRAY? God, our creator. In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, we see that God created everything: light, earth, water, air, plants, animals, and humans. God created the entire world out of nothing. And everything that God created, God called “good.” God saved the best for the last day of creation; he created man and woman in his own image. He is unchanging, love, faithful and knowable. Prayer is a way that we can get to KNOW God. 3. WHY DO WE PRAY? For most it is when something is hard or has gone wrong, a family member is sick, lost a job, or we need direction. For others, they have developed a relationship with God and have a prayer in their heart at all times, living their lives through His direction. We pray when others we care about are in need. 4. ARE ALL PRAYERS ANSWERED? YES! Be grateful and praise Him when they are answered the way you had hoped for. Be looking the door to open for your next opportunity IF it seems your prayer was not answered. When I prayed for an answer to my health struggles and asked God to show me WHY what we were doing wasn't working... the answer I received was definitely not what I expected. He is always working things out for good in our lives. We want to personally invite you back July 5th for Episode 31 where we will be talking about HEALING! I will have had my explant surgery (for more see Episode 22) and be 6 weeks into my healing. Jessica and Joseph take a look at why we pray.Prayer has become such a dividing line in the church these days, with people breaking off into different camps. There are camps of people who love to pray and camps of people who don't care to pray at all. Then there are people in between.Next, they look at what Jesus said about prayer, going back to Matthew 6 and the Lord's prayer. Was it meant to be an outline or a ready-made prayer from Jesus? Finally, they reflect on what this means for all of us. Show Music: Godfrey GomezCover Art: Maurice Gomez

"Why Do We Pray?" 12/29/2019 Sunday Sermon Pastor David L Goldsberry Romans 15:30-33 Can I really pray this prayer in faith knowing it is for the glory of God?

god pray why do we pray
Overflow Church

**Intro ** You may have heard or may have said, “I will pray for you” or “Our thoughts and Prayers are with you”. *Why Do We Pray.* Sick, tragedy, death, In the time of a need. *Marks of a true Christian.*Charles Spurgeon, the great preacher of the Victorian era said of prayer in the church, "If the spirit of prayer is not with the people, the minister may preach like an angle but cannot expect success. There may be in that church wealth, talent, labor and many outreach efforts, but the Lord is not there. Prayer is as sure evidence of the presence of God as the rising of the thermometer is evidence of an increase in temperature. If God is near a church, it must pray. If he is not, one of the obvious signs of His absence will be lethargy in prayer."*Romans 12:12* Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, and to be constant in *prayer*. Doesn't matter the season of life stay constant in prayer. *_*Jesus lived a life in Prayer. * **_* Jesus knew Gods plan for him. He was patient to walk it out even when it got tough. He relied on prayer. He was constantly in *prayer. *Jesus was faced with many opportunities to choose a different direction from His father's plan. Read - Matthew 26:38-39 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” In this time of a sorrowful season in Jesus life he relied on one of the greatest spiritual disciplines in the Christian Faith, *Prayer.* ** ***_*Our life in prayer*_***Dry Seasons and Season that foster Spiritual Growth**Dry Seasons * Lack of self-control, * Lack of time in communion with the Lord. * Second discipline – Lack of time in the Word. Recognize the patterns and Guard your heart. *Romans 12:2* Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that *by testing you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect.* Don't let circumstances in the season you're in change your direction. *My season*My reset times. / Realign my focus and gain direction. Our Next Step - Direction * When we gain direction by discernment through prayer, we know that our next step will be in alignment with Gods will. * The father and son relationship (the Father's Will) Most fathers!**John 5:19** “what ever the father does the son does likewise.”* This takes spiritual discipline, self-control, and following what Jesus modeled for us. *_*Maintaining alignment *_***How do we Maintain alignment?**Praying and getting distracted! That's a real struggle! Friendship is contingent on the benefits that a friend brings. Relationships for personal gain. Our prayers reflect this if not put in check. Only going to God when we are in need. Our relationship becomes one sided. *Philippians 4:6* do not be *anxious* about anything *but in everything* by prayer and supplication *with* *thanksgiving* make your needs know to the lord. * Don't be anxious – come to the lord knowing he is in control. * We are to bring it to him humbly requesting through prayer knowing he delights in our acknowledgement of who He is. Most importantly after our request He tells us to worship Him with thanksgiving. He longs for our affection. In this we form a “habit” that is lived out in our life, decisions, needs and our relationships with others. This is not based on the outcome of our request its immediate. *_*Challenge*_*Prayer is fellowship with God and a direct reflection of our relationship with him. If you are in love with Him then your prayer life will reflect it. Prayer is like a marriage. You can not be a growing Christian and not pray just like you can not have a growing marriage with out talking to your spouse. * Dry season / no new spiritual growth. * Struggling to see direction * Men to lead their families in prayer * Spurgeon - If He is not, one of the obvious signs of His absence will be lethargy in prayer. * We are all somewhere so let's start today as a church and come together in prayer but not let it stop after we leave that we all take a piece of this home and lead, grow and live it out in faith. * *1 Thessalonians 5:16 rejoice always, pray without ceasing. ***LifeGroup Questions ** * How healthy is your prayer life? * In what ways do you struggle with praying? (Distractions, praying in public, with spouse or as a family) * Do you see that the seasons of life play effect in your prayer life? How? More or less? * Does our prayer life reflect a relationship that is contingent on our needs or our worship? * How does Philippians 4:6 change the way we pray and start to see our prayer as worship, acknowledging who he is?
