Series: 1 John: That You May KnowPreacher: Pastor Anson McMahonThis sermon from 1 John 2:15-17 provides a crucial examination of the Christian's relationship with the world. Anson powerfully unpacks the seemingly paradoxical command to "not love the world," carefully distinguishing this from a hatred of people or creation. Instead, he illuminates "the world" as a Satan-influenced system of values and desires that stand in opposition to God. Through a detailed exploration of the "devil's trinity" – the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life – the sermon reveals the core temptations that lure believers away from a life devoted to God. Ultimately, it contrasts the fleeting nature of worldly satisfaction with the eternal significance of loving and obeying God, urging listeners to choose a path of lasting value.Key Points:The Command Against Worldly Love: An explanation of 1 John 2:15 and the call for believers to resist loving the world and its allurements.Defining "The World" Biblically: Clarification that "the world" in this context refers to a system of values opposed to God, not people or the created order. The "Devil's Trinity" of Worldly Temptations:The Desires of the Flesh (Lust of the Flesh): The pursuit of immediate, sensory gratification that disregards God's will. The Desires of the Eyes (Lust of the Eyes): The temptation towards materialism and coveting based on visual appeal and societal trends. The Pride of Life: The arrogant self-sufficiency that rejects dependence on God and seeks validation through worldly success. The Transitory Nature of Worldly Pleasures: An emphasis on the temporary and ultimately unsatisfying nature of sin and worldly pursuits compared to eternal joy in God.Choosing a Love with Eternal Significance: A strong encouragement to prioritize loving and obeying God, investing in what has lasting value beyond the fleeting nature of the world.Reflect & Discuss:In what specific ways do you see the "desires of the flesh," "desires of the eyes," and "pride of life" manifesting in our culture today? How can believers practically distinguish between enjoying God's creation and loving the world's system? What are some areas in your own life where you might be tempted to love the world or the things in the world more than God?How does understanding the temporary nature of the world impact your priorities and decisions as a Christian?Discuss practical steps you can take to cultivate a greater love for God and resist the allure of the world.Scripture:1 John 2:15-17Genesis 3:62 Samuel 11:2-4Joshua 7:20-21Proverbs 27:201 Timothy 6:9-10John 12:42-432 Timothy 3:2-4John 3:16Psalm 24:1Genesis 2:9James 1:14-15Proverbs 14:12Hebrews 11:25Matthew 16:26John 15:18-191 John 5:19Colossians 3:2Philippians 3:20Keywords:Love, World, Worldliness, Desires of the Flesh, Lust of the Flesh, Desires of the Eyes, Lust of the Eyes, Pride of Life, Temptation, Sin, Eternal Life, Temporary, Values, Culture, God, Obedience, Discipleship.

We're living in unprecedented times. We're watching the news and media outlets waiting bracing ourselves for the worst. We're watching what feels like hell breaking lose. And if we're not careful, we'll allow the sensationalization of what we see to override what we know God can do and who He is. If we're not careful, we'll allow the master of deception (Satan) to allow fear to trump our faith, doubt to disrupt our discernment, and tragedy to triumph over our trust in Him.My prayer for us is that we remember that we have the mind of Christ. My prayer is that we remember that we can pray and receive spiritual perception, even if what God shares with us doesn't make sense to other people. My prayer is that we don't allow headlines, laws, or any distractions to keep us from doing the things God has called us to do and who He has called us to be. May you speak the Word of God until it is what you experience.Reference Scriptures:1 Corinthians 2:11-16Psalm 34:4Hebrews 11:1

What image comes to mind when you hear the word prayer? What if prayer became less of a regular spiritual chore and more of a conversational friendship with God? What if God invites us to an ongoing exchange of whispers throughout our day—us whispering to Him and Him whispering right back to our hearts? What if our prayer lives reflected equitable amounts of both talking and listening? In those places in our lives where we feel burdened, broken, or burned-out, God invites us into this rhythm of ongoing communion with Him. And as we commune with God, conversing with Him throughout our day, He will restore our joy. First Sunday of AdventThe season of Advent is a time of waiting, properly understood as preparation. During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season it is normal to focus on menu planning, shopping for gifts, and writing Christmas cards. These are the usual ways to prepare for Christmas. One important part we left out though is found in today's Gospel. Jesus tells his disciples, “Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36-38). Advent provides us the opportunity to reflect on the reason for waiting...the arrival of Jesus Christ into our hearts. We also learn how we wait... Anxiously? Lonely? Curiously? Thankfully? Joyfully? As we begin this holy season, let us ask the Lord to open our hearts in prayer to receive the gift of his ever abiding presence. In this episode we talk about how the Bible is a means to the end of knowing Jesus more intimately, and we look at one specific practice we can do to approach the Scriptures this way.NET footnote on Psalm 23:6 and the word "follow" (or "pursue"): "The use of רָדַף (radaf, “pursue, chase”) with טוֹב וָחֶסֶד (tov vakhesed, “goodness and faithfulness”) as subject is ironic. This is the only place in the entire OT where either of these nouns appears as the subject of this verb רָדַף (radaf, “pursue”). This verb is often used to describe the hostile actions of enemies. One might expect the psalmist's enemies (see v. 5) to chase him, but ironically God's “goodness and faithfulness” (which are personified and stand by metonymy for God himself) pursue him instead. The word “pursue” is used outside of its normal context in an ironic manner and creates a unique, but pleasant word picture of God's favor (or a kind God) “chasing down” the one whom he loves."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 15:8John 17:3John 6:63Psalm 127:1Psalm 27:8Matthew 11:28Psalm 138:3Psalm 9:1-2Psalm 8:3-4Psalm 1:2-3Psalm 18:28-29Psalm 51:10Psalm 30:11-12Psalm 13:1-6Psalm 10:1Psalm 27:10Psalm 7:1-2Psalm 46:1-3Psalm 147:10-11Psalm 143:7-12Psalm 63:1-4, 8Psalm 139:1-16Psalm 23**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I said the guy who disciples me had me write on the front cover, "I read this book to know Jesus more." Amen.Old Testament1 Samuel 17: (1a, 4-11, 19-23), 32-49[The Philistines gathered their armies for battle. And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. He had greaves of bronze on his legs and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and his shield-bearer went before him. He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” And the Philistine said, “Today I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man, that we may fight together.” When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid. Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the encampment as the army was going forth to the battle line, shouting the war cry. Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage, ran to the ranks, and went and greeted his brothers. As he talked with them, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him.]David said to Saul, “Let no one's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and whenever a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after it and struck it down, rescuing the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned against me, I would catch it by the jaw, strike it down, and kill it. When Jesus was crucified and buried in a borrowed tomb, it appeared to many of His followers that all hope was lost. However, Jesus came to demonstrate that what appeared to be an enduring defeat was merely a brief pause on His path to triumph over death, Hell, and the grave. His resurrection illustrates that just as He did not remain in the tomb, we can also emerge from life's circumstances and embrace the power of resurrection.03/31/2024 - Resurrection SundayScriptures Used (In Order of Occurrence):Luke 24:1-8John 12:35II Corinthians 4:4, 4:6John 8:12Psalm 119:105John 1:9Mark 5:3John 1:4-5Matthew 4:16Psalm 18:28

If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?' just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'” They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,“Hosanna!Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!Hosanna in the highest heaven!”Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.orJohn 12:12-16The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord— the King of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written: “Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!” His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been done to him.The PsalmPsalm 118:1-2, 19-29Confitemini Domino1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; *his mercy endures for ever.2 Let Israel now proclaim, *"His mercy endures for ever."19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; *I will enter them;I will offer thanks to the Lord.20 "This is the gate of the Lord; *he who is righteous may enter."21 I will give thanks to you, for you answered me *and have become my salvation.22 The same stone which the builders rejected *has become the chief cornerstone.23 This is the Lord's doing, *and it is marvelous in our eyes.24 On this day the Lord has acted; *we will rejoice and be glad in it.25 Hosannah, Lord, hosannah! *Lord, send us now success.26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; *we bless you from the house of the Lord.27 God is the Lord; he has shined upon us; *form a procession with branches up to the horns of the altar.28 "You are my God, and I will thank you; *you are my God, and I will exalt you."29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; *his mercy endures for ever.at The Liturgy of the WordThe CollectAlmighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to...

Someone who is solely dedicated to God's cause can be described as a "rider" for His "brand." This brand associates us with Him in every single aspect of our lives - thereby being the way in which we show our commitment to Him. As we submit to His headship because of our love for Him, we can then walk in the authority and promises that only He can give. 01/07/2024 - Sunday NightScriptures Used (In Order of Occurrence):Numbers 15:37-41Ezekiel 44:23I Peter 1:16Numbers 15:40Matthew 22:37-40I John 5:2-3Jude 1:4Matthew 5:16Isaiah 4:1Jeremiah 35:14-16Psalm 40:8Song of Solomon 8:6-7

D. Greear that I mentionedBelow is the quote from J. D. Greear that I read near the end. Two people asked for it after this lesson was originally given; so, I wanted to include it here as well in case anyone else wanted to note it down."When the Holy Spirit, your real Shepherd speaks, it's in the context of hope. Yes, He will convict you of sin, but when He does, it is redemptive. He identifies what He wants you to change, He gives you a plan to do it, and He assures you of His ability to accomplish it through your life. His voice leads to clarity, and love, and life. When one of the demonic realm speaks to you with a fiery dart, it is in the context of condemnation and despair. It is never clear what they want you to change, there is certainly no hope or no redemption in it. The voice just screams hopelessness and despair.…When our enemy speaks, it has the soundtrack of death, and defeat, and confusion, and despair. When Jesus speaks, it is filled with invitation, and clarity, and love, and hope. Any voice leading you to confusion and despair is your enemy's voice, even if it's using valid questions or pointing out true facts.…My shepherd never leads to confusion and darkness. He leads only to life. Even if Satan is pointing out true things in your life, if it's leading you to despair, recognize that as his voice and resist it.…In your life, the voice of despair is the voice of Satan and never the voice of the Holy Spirit."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 4:4Ephesians 1:17Psalm 63Psalm 4:6-7Numbers 6:24-26Psalm 16:11Psalm 34:5Psalm 34:8John 15:4-5Galatians 5:22-23Psalm 36:7-9Psalm 37:4Malachi 1:6-14Psalm 50:14-15Psalm 50:23Hebrews 13:151 Thessalonians 5:16-18Psalm 69:30-31Philippians 2:13Matthew 3:13-4:11James 1:2-4Romans 8:28James 1:25Psalm 66:16Psalm 34:1-3Proverbs 27:21Luke 17:11-19Hebrews 11:6Psalm 1:1-3John 15:9-11Psalm 33:1Psalm 40:16Psalm 59:17Psalm 71:8Hebrews 12:2Matthew 7:7James 4:2Philippians 4:6-7John 10:10Matthew 11:28Romans 8:1John 14:16-17Revelation 12:10-11Romans 8:33-34**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I switched the word order of Romans 8:28 (although it didn't affect the meaning). Here is the correct wording: "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."When I said I could think of two times where the Lord really did something in my life and then I was hit with anxiety, I meant that there are two times I could think of that intense anxiety immediately followed what the Lord did. I didn't mean to imply that I could think of only two times when I could remember Him working in my circumstances. Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary TimeWhile we know that we can't pack everything, Jesus' parable in today's Gospel is urging us to remember what is important to pack for the journey of life. Saint Paul exhorts the Thessalonians to pack some hope. He says that death will cause us to grieve, but not like those without hope. For we Christians hope in God and in His resurrection from the dead. Today's Gospel is not about stocking up material supplies. Rather, it is about building up and maintaining a relationship with Jesus Christ, who provides a reservoir of faith and hope while sustaining those who wait. Think about appearing before God. Start packing now. We only can take our carry-on luggage. Jesus demonstrates the best way to pack is by reconciling with family members, forgiving people who hurt you, letting go of petty concerns, putting on Christ by showing compassion. Confession also, relieves heavy burdens of past mistakes and poor decision making. Spend time on earth seeking God and finding Christ in everyone. Our lives do have eternal consequences. Let us continue the good work that lies ahead as we move towards our eternal homeland.Scripture Reading for November 12, 2023Wisdom 6:12-16Psalm 63:2-81 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Matthew 25:1-13

In this episode we talk about living in the freedom of God's grace versus the slavery of legalism. While this episode is lengthy, there is some much more that could have been said on the topic or even just regarding the book of Galatians. After listening to this episode, I would highly encourage you to go read Galatians start to finish keeping in mind what we discussed today.Purchase The Grace Awakening (Chuck Swindoll).View the definition of "justify".View the definition of "righteousness".Quotes used:AMP Bible footnote: "Being justified is a legal or judicial declaration of righteousness. Justification has two parts: (1) Being declared free of blame, acquitted of sin—not guilty. Believers are justified because Jesus Christ personally assumed the guilt for our sin on the cross; (2) God declares the person righteous, that is, placed in a position of right-standing with Him. A person may not be made righteous by his personal behavior, no matter how good, or by the declaration of any other human being.""There is a battle raging today throughout the world in the heads and hearts of multitudes of people, who just will not accept the fact that they can do absolutely nothing to justify themselves before God!" (Phil Newton)"Paul did not deny that good works were significant. He just denied that they were the grounds of our acceptance. Regardless of what those in the world wish to believe, it is a fact that what we surround ourselves with will affect our relationship with God. The question with each influence should be this: does this help me live for God or not? We are to be separated unto God and set apart for His use, thus, we must be very careful what we allow into our lives. 07/06/2023 - Thursday NightScriptures Used (In Order of Occurrence):Proverbs 4:23-27I Corinthians 10:23I Corinthians 6:19-20Matthew 12:34-35Acts 2:37I Corinthians 15:33II Corinthians 6:17Ephesians 5:19II Kings 3:15I Samuel 16:23Exodus 32:17-18Philippians 4:8Colossians 3:16Psalm 101:3II Timothy 2:19-22
The day this podcast is released will be Father's Day. I know there can be a plethora of emotions that that come through. I was blessed to be raised by my biological dad and my step dad, both men I called dad, and both walked me down the aisle my first message. My biological dad died suddenly one month before my wedding to Chris, so that, as you can imagine, was a super difficult time, and I still miss him every day. Sometimes, our view of God as our Heavenly father can be skewed by our past experiences with our earthly father. Today we talk about the importance of having a right view of God and living our lives in continual awareness of His presence and love.Other episodes mentioned in this one:Episode 24: The GospelThis episode is named after this song. I would encourage you to listen to it and specifically note the chorus in light of our discussion today. Here is another song about how amazing the Lord's heart towards us is. This second song is also relevant to the Brother Lawrence quote I read.Quotes from today:“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” (A.W. Tozer)"Brother Lawrence felt it was a great delusion to think that the times of prayer ought to differ from the other times." (The Practice of the Presence of God)"My King is full of mercy and goodness. Far from chastising me, He embraces me with love. He makes me eat at His table. He serves me with His own hand and gives me the key to His treasures. He converses and delights Himself with me incessantly in a thousand and a thousand ways. And He treats me in all respects as His favorite." In this episode we discuss the subtlety and peril of having a victim mentality. It's something that we can all fall into if we're not paying attention, and, if we're not careful, such a mentality has the power to dominate our lives and color the way we see everything that happens around us.Other episodes mentioned in this one:Episode 12: His steadfast love endures foreverEpisode 54: How to respond to pressure and stressScriptures referenced:Psalm 107:6, 13, 19, 28Psalm 107:8, 15, 21, 31Psalm 138:3Romans 12:2Philippians 4:132 Peter 1:3-4Romans 8:11Joshua 6:261 Kings 16:341 Corinthians 13:11Romans 3:4Psalm 27Psalm 18:29Hebrews 13:5Psalm 107:11 Samuel 16:14Psalm 51:11John 14:16Psalm 20:7-8Matthew 26:63Hebrews 12:2Philippians 2:51 Corinthians 2:162 Chronicles 16:12Psalm 42:10-11Romans 8:37Romans 8:31Romans 8:28-29Philippians 4:6-7Jeremiahs 22:8-9Jeremiah 32:14-15**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**Regarding the curse laid on anyone who would rebuild Jericho, note what the latter part of 1 Kings 16:34 says, "according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun". Notice that it was a word from the Lord spoken by Joshua. It originated with the Lord. He was the source of the power behind the pronouncement. When reading 1 Corinthians 13:11 I added the word "but" to emphasize the contrast, but "but" is not in the actual passage. The point I was making by quoting Romans 3:4 is that God and His Word are true, period. They are true regardless of everything else. If the truth of God bumps up against something we think, then it is we who need to adjust and correct to the Word of God and not the other way around.I paraphrased Philippians 4:6-7. It wasn't a direct quote.Feel free to email any questions or comments you have to ijustwanttotalkabout@gmail.com.
