Hey there dirtbags! I'm excited for you all to hear this interview with Paisley Fields. Paisley grew up in a small town in Iowa and after finishing college moved to NYC. He's had a remarkable journey in music and tells me about the first time he performed in college, about forming a band and touring in Japan, and like we usually do on A Dirtbag's Guide, we talk about religion and religious trauma. His album Limp Wrist has been called an exploration of where rural queerness intersects with religion. He's a charismatic and super engaging performer while also very genuine in his approach to everything from his love of video games to his ideas about acceptance and social justice. This dude is the real deal, and this was all apparent during my conversation with him back in the fall of 2022. Hey Dirtbags! This week's episode of A Dirtbag's Guide to Life On The Road is a really special one. I got to sit down with Craig Finn of The Hold Steady a while back and talk about his life in music. From his first guitar lessons and being turned on to independent record stores, to what it takes to make a band like The Hold Steady be able to exist for 20+ years. I even got to deep dive into his process of writing the song that first pulled me into his songwriting and stories, Magic Marker. It was a weird time in my life when I first heard that song, and I was really drawn to the hyper detailed story he was able to create within such a short format of a song.I remember listening to Magic Marker over and over and thinking “man, I'd really like to talk to Craig about that song.” Life being the unpredictably poetic thing that it is, a few years later I was asked to guitar tech for them on some shows, and I eventually worked up the nerve to ask Craig to come on the podcast. He was enthusiastic at the idea and I'm super grateful for that. I'm also really grateful for the times I've been able to work with The Hold Steady and see how much fun they all have every single time they are on stage. It's inspiring, and I suggest you see The Hold Steady, or Craig Finn live as soon as you have the chance. Get tickets to see The Hold Steady Live! Listen to The Hold Steady! After a week away I've got a really special episode with Nerdcore Rapper, Streamer, and author Mega Ran. We talk about him growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and where his love for video games comes from. We also talk about how he first started making beats, and it's always been somewhat tied to video games. He first gained  attention through his Final Fantasy 7 themed album The Black Materia and since then he's been very prolific releasing albums and collaborations regularly and most recently having his song 'Tractor Beam' in the newest Kevin Smith film Clerks 3. He's a regular performer at Comic Con's and similar conventions, and even wrote a book titled "Dream Master" during 2020 lockdown. At this point I'd be surprised to find something he can't do. Goddamn Dirtbags this was a really fun episode. It was my first time meeting Christoph but it felt like we had a little bit of a musical kinship. I can't tell i we've got kind of similar stories or if the pursuit of punk is just really relatable whether you grew up in a small mountain town or practically in the city that never sleeps. Christoph grew up in the shadow of Manhattan just on the other side of the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City. As early as 12 he found himself making his way into New York City looking for “punk” or any sign of its faint and distant heartbeat. While many old-timers from the Glory Days of punk may have considered the movement long dead before Christoph's inquisitive arrival, Christoph forged on. After years of searching and hard work it seems that the very heart of punk has found him. No other than Iggy Pop has personally asked Christoph's group Crazy & The Brains to play Destination Chaos, Iggy's festival in the Dominica Republic this coming winter. Whether he found it or it found him doesn't matter. They've found each other and they'll keep making noise and fucking shit up until they walk off into that far setting sun. Sorry for disappearing without any notice, but that's just how it goes sometimes. This week's episode is one for the books. I get to sit down and have a conversation with my friend Drew Danburry who I haven't seen or really spoken to since I was 20 or 21 years old. Drew is an important figure in the development of my punk rock/diy musician ethos and I couldn't be more honored to have him on the podcast. When I came up with the idea for this podcast, I had a number of people in mind that I'd really love to interview because they embodied the spirit of what I wanted to capture so perfectly, and Drew sits very high up on that list. We end up having a really genuine podcast about growing up Mormon but also loving Punk Rock & Skateboarding. About love and heartbreak, and also the messiness of what it's like figuring out what's next after a chapter in your life seems to be coming to an end. After the set he and I started talking and it turned out we had a bunch of mutual friends in Arizona as well as here in Brooklyn. Since then Jeff's been the homie. He's really good at bringing people together, making events and things happen even when he isn't physically there, as well as just getting folks psyched about a project or a show. This probably has a lot to do with why Mega Ran asked Jeff to be his manager a few years ago. He's got a great demeanor and nothing but nice things to say about all the right people, and happy to talk shit to and about the other folks who deserve it. Journalist, Documentary Filmmaker, and all around smart and interesting person Olivia Heffernan and The Dirtbag King talk about her very non-typical childhood, the importance of language, and hope in a dystopian capitalist society. There's probably some leftist politics in there if you look hard enough, but probably not the "Socialists" your high school friend's Dad keeps warning you about on Facebook. The Dirtbag King and The Rat Queen live mere miles away from each other in NYC's Borough of Brooklyn and so naturally it was only a matter of time before they held court and discussed Heavy Metal, Sobriety, Dogs, and more. I had such a great time hanging with my new friend Riley Pinkerton and finding out about her journey to becoming The Rat Queen. It's inspiring, it's insightful, but mostly it's a lot of fun. Check out Riley Pinkerton, her band Castle Rat, and her clothing line Rat Queen Headquarters on Instagram.
