In this episode, we feature the incredible Latinx artist Martin Sorrondeguy, also known as Martin Crudo. You might know Martin as the founding member, lead vocalist, and lyricist of the legendary Latinx hardcore punk band Los Crudos. The band's powerful lyrics spoke to the Latinx experience in the US and resonated with popular struggles across Latin America, making waves worldwide.  Growing up in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, the heart of the city's Mexican community, Martin's musical journey began in the '90s. Since then, he's gone on to other unique projects, like the queercore punk band Limp Wrist and his latest venture, a solo electronic dance music project called NRRRV. As if that weren't enough, Martin is also a talented photographer. Please tune in to hear his inspiring story and the incredible impact he's had on the music scene and beyond.

Dec. 31, 1973, in the wilds of Australia, the legendary AC/DC played their very first gig. Effectively making 2024 their 50th (!!) anniversary.   So obviously this is a big f'n deal. So we decided to give Angus and the Boys some time in our "Spotlight" episode. We go over some of our fave songs and albums, how we discovered the band and the (non) controversies. And of course the age old question - Bon vs. Brian?   In our "News, Views and Tunes", we go over the recent discovery of a 235 yr old Mozart song. We tell a nazi punk to "Fvck Off!!" And we finally gave THAT Jethro Tull album a spin. Musically, we crank tunes from Hirax, Mortal Sin, Crystal Viper, Gruesome, Asexuals, Limp Wrist, ACXDC and the aforementioned Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (!!).   Horns up!!

A Dirtbag's Guide To Life On The Road

Hey there dirtbags! I'm excited for you all to hear this interview with Paisley Fields. Paisley grew up in a small town in Iowa and after finishing college moved to NYC. He's had a remarkable journey in music and tells me about the first time he performed in college, about forming a band and touring in Japan, and like we usually do on A Dirtbag's Guide, we talk about religion and religious trauma. His album Limp Wrist has been called an exploration of where rural queerness intersects with religion. It's a really solid interview and I'm really looking forward to hearing what you all think of it! UNDER ATTACK is a band focused on “vicious precision hardcore” made up of vocalist Alex Cope, guitarist Mark Telfian, bassist/vocalist Jason Hodges (Suppression, Oozing Meat), and drummer Dave Witte (Municipal Waste). Collectively, the band has an extensive “ex members of” list including Limp Wrist, Discordance Axis, Human Remains, Hail Mary, Eucharist, and many, many more. The band began a few years back, when Dave Witte and Mark Telfian connected at a party in Richmond, VA. After many meetings at Dave's food truck, Go Go Vegan Go, they talked about forming a brutal hardcore band with no gimmicks, in the spirit of predecessors like Negative Approach, Straight Ahead, and, in general, old school 80s punk and hardcore. After figuring out two other old friends to bring into the mix, the band started practicing nonstop in February of 2019. By March, they recorded a 5 song demo released in the US on Vinyl Conflict and in Europe on AutoReverse. In August of 2019, their first 7” came out on Iron Lung Records called “Through the Blade.” In February of 2021, they had a split 7” with the Dutch hardcore legends Seein Red on Autoreverse and Way Back When Records, as well as another split 7” in the works with Loose Nukes on Mutant Sound Records and a split 12” with Fright on Gloom records. Needless to say, the band is relentless in both musical approach and work ethic. “Preservation's Crash” continues with the band's dark and aggressive driving force of 80s punk and hardcore influence-- with this release, really commiting to leaning into Dave's impossibly fast, hard-hitting, manic, but uncompromising drum skills to complement Alex's scummy vocals. This sonic assault is a mere extension of the lyrical message: in short, anger and frustration with life and society. The hostility of religious institutions that ferment self loathing. Coping with depression through life's hardships.

In Episode 2 of Metropolis Rising, my guest is Latinx artist Martin Sorrondeguy (also known as Martin Crudo).  Martin is best known as the founder, lead singer, and lyricist of the Latinx hardcore punk bank, Los Crudos, who quickly came to have an impact around the world.  The lyrics of the band’s songs spoke politically to the Latinx experience in the United States but also responded to popular struggles across Latin America.  The band originated in the 1990s in the Pilsen neighborhood, the center of the political and cultural life of Chicago’s Mexican community, where Martin grew up.  Later, Sorrondeguy moved on to other musical projects, including the queercore punk band, Limp Wrist, and most recently a solo electronic dance music project called NRRRV.  Martin is also an accomplished photographer.

In the sixth episode of Barely Human, we look back at punk and hardcore through the lens of two artists who have been footnoted by mainstream histories. First we look at the London punk explosion through the eyes of Poly Styrene and her band X-Ray Spex, who went from selling kitsch anti-fashion accessories on Kings Road in 1976, to playing punk on Top of the Pops two years later. Then we turn to '90s hardcore heroes Los Crudos, a band who had the mission of putting culture into their sub-culture, by playing punk music in their local community halls, and singing entirely in Spanish. Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Andrew Martini of Limp Wrist, Kill the Man Who Questions, and The Stuntmen; Myles Donovan of Disemballerina, A Stick and A Stone, Negative Queen, and Erik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble; and Mon Ovath of F80 and Moufoka and Hanoi Panic ‘zines. We discuss how they grew up and came into their queer and punk indentities in Philadelphia. The emphasis is on the queer punk scene that came to full fruitition in the 1990s (fueled in part by ACT-UP activism and Riot Grrrl) and gained momentum as more young punks came out and brought the energy and confrontational politics (as well as the fun) to audiences who were not always receptive, but were not given the option to turn away. In a pre-internet era when networking was significantly more tenuous and primitive, finding fellow “members of the tribe” could be a frustrating — and at times dangerous — process. Through their art as musicians and performers, Andrew, Myles, and Mon reached — and continue to inspire — young people looking for outsiders like themselves. Their stories eventually interconnect with one another and twine through the history of Philadelphia’s underground music scene and the people and places that once comprised it. This is a raucous interview with three fascinating fellows. The Summer of Rad returns! This week the rad gang hits the great outdoors (i.e. Kyle's lovely backyard) with Matt Lantrip and Brandie Posey, two Warped Tour veterans, to discuss this venerable summer music institution. It's the day after Kyle and Nat's big Fourth of July party, and Kyle and Laura spend a lot of the episode downing leftover Jello shots. The gang weighs in on the good, the bad, and the ugly side of the festival and talks about the influence of things like Hot Topic and Myspace on the way that a generation of kids found music. (The late '90s and early '00s pop punk ecosystem was a delicate place full of a lot of dyed hair with swoopy side bangs, and this group has some opinions about it.) About halfway through, Kyle's brother Kasey joins the fray. Together, they chat about the best acts they've ever seen along with a few of the worst. They also have a spirited debate about the most "Warped Tour" band of all time and give some tips for how to make it through a hot day at the festival without dying. Plus, The Living End might be the world's most underrated live band, Less Than Jake are still great after all these years, and there is some debate about the merits of pop punk. The group also explores some of the festival's recent and past controversies. Prepare to hear a bunch of people fire off about a million band names and enjoy Natalie shaking her head at every last one of them.
