Hey friend, for today's mini episode, I'm sharing a poem I wrote in June called "Simple ain't easy." You know how it is when you're explaining your creative dreams to someone and they give you that look? That "well, why don't you just do it then?" look. As if picking up a brush or opening a laptop was the hard part. I've been thinking a lot lately about this gap between what looks simple from the outside and what actually unfolds when you're living the creative life. Because yes, the act itself (of putting paint to canvas, fingers to keys, voice to microphone) that part really is simple. But everything that happens around that moment? The voices, the bills, the doubt, the way the world tries to convince you that your art doesn't matter? That's where it gets complicated. This poem came to me after a particularly frustrating week where I kept catching myself making excuses for not creating. And I realized I was treating "simple" and "easy" like they were the same thing. They're not. So here's "Simple ain't easy," a reminder for all of us who know exactly what we want to create but somehow keep finding ourselves standing still. Take a breath. Do the simple things. Even if Simple Ain't Easy. Our guest today is Roger Mayer, one of the most influential scholars in the field of trust and co-creator of a widely cited model of organizational trust. After attending Roger's presentation at the FINT Conference in Genoa, Italy, podcast host Severin de Wit sat down with him for a conversation on the evolving nature of trust and the surprising role that suspicion plays within it. The conversation begins with two striking images from Mayer's FINT talk: HAL 9000, the eerily calm AI from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", and the Shoggoth, a chaotic, shapeshifting creature recently adopted as a meme in AI circles. Mayer uses these metaphors to illustrate a central dilemma: as AI systems become more powerful and autonomous, how do we trust something we don't fully understand? Mayer introduces the concept of state-level suspicion, based on research by Bobko, Barelka, and Hirshfield. He explains that suspicion isn't just a gut feeling; it's a cognitive state involving uncertainty, heightened awareness, and the perception of possible harm. Far from being purely negative, suspicion may serve as a protective and even constructive force in complex organizational settings. A major focus of the episode is what Mayer calls Organizational Dissociative Identity Disorder (ODID). In this phenomenon, organizations send conflicting signals to employees, behave inconsistently, or act as if they have “multiple personalities.” Whether caused by mergers, mission drift, or rogue internal actors, ODID can undermine trust and leave employees feeling destabilized. Roger discusses how AI can further complicate this dynamic when its decision-making processes are opaque or misaligned with human expectations. Roger Mayer previously appeared on TrustTalk in our March 13, 2024 episode, where we explored the foundations of his trust model. In this follow-up conversation, we focus on the emerging tensions between trust, technology, and organizational coherence.

I'm happy to have author David Annandale return to the podcast to talk about low budget genre cinema again! Severin has issued a fantastic Blu-Ray of the film UNKNOWN WORLD (1951) so we use this release to dig into the little-discussed science fiction movie. Often seen in terrible, dark prints in various places around the internet this one deserves more attention, so we were both thrilled that it is now sharp and beautiful in its black & white HD glory. Did it look this good in '51? For a film produced by a couple of special effects artists UNKNOWN WORLD certainly has a lot on its mind. It is one of the earliest examples of apocalyptic nuclear ‘doom warning' movies and we wonder if that fact is why it is less well known than later movies of this type. We discuss the cast and crew of this nine-day wonder including the oddity of the primary actor not getting screen credit. We lament the very few acting roles of the female lead and ramble through the credits of several other actors as well. We point out the solid effects work and marvel over the fantastic matte shots. Of course, we do acknowledge the weaknesses of the film and how its (intentionally?) dull middle segment can make the running time seem longer than it actually is. So, strap yourself in the Cyclotram and lets go caving! If you have anything to say about this film or any others that we have covered thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast hosted by Severin Sorensen with an episode titled "Leading with Kindness: On Executive Coaching and Cultural Intelligence." In this episode, Severin engages with Dr. Krista Crawford, a distinguished Vistage Chair, speaker, consultant, professor, and leadership strategist. Krista holds a PhD in Organizational Management and is a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). With over 30 years of experience spanning human resources, organizational development, and executive leadership, she has significantly impacted leaders across corporate and nonprofit sectors. This episode was recorded on March 26th, 2025, via Zoom. Krista's journey into executive coaching and Vistage Chairing is as unique as it is inspiring. After decades in HR, where she led organizations with up to 8,000 employees, Krista transitioned into leadership coaching serendipitously during the COVID-19 pandemic. A neighbor introduced her to Vistage, leading to her eventual certification and the establishment of multiple peer advisory groups. Her career is deeply rooted in observing and addressing the human dynamics within organizations. Krista identified early the gaps in leadership development, particularly how some employees flourish while others feel disconnected. Her doctoral research focused on "social monitoring" and "cultural intelligence," exploring how individuals adapt and integrate into diverse cultural settings. Conducted in Belize with service-learning students, her research revealed that active engagement with local cultures significantly enhances cultural intelligence. Beyond her coaching, Krista serves as an adjunct professor at Virginia Tech and Champlain College, teaching leadership, ethics, and organizational development. She brings a rich blend of academic rigor and practical experience, leveraging her HR expertise, research acumen, and passion for continuous learning to guide executives and emerging leaders. Key Insights 1. The Art of Listening and Pausing Krista emphasizes the importance of listening to hear rather than listening to respond. In coaching, silence is a powerful tool, allowing clients to reflect deeply. She practices intentional breathing to create space for reflection and meaningful dialogue. 2. The Power of Vulnerability and Group Dynamics She highlights how vulnerability within peer groups fosters deeper trust and growth. Krista shared a pivotal moment when a group conflict tested cohesion; addressing it transparently strengthened the group's unity and resilience. 3. Job Crafting for Engagement Krista advocates for job crafting, encouraging leaders to engage employees in designing roles that align with their strengths and passions, thus enhancing satisfaction and retention. 4. Measuring Success Through Joy Joy serves as Krista's personal metric for professional fulfillment. She believes that work should bring joy and that leaders should reassess their roles when joy diminishes. 5. Use of Psychometrics and AI in Coaching Krista integrates tools like Wiley DiSC and various psychometric assessments to deepen understanding of team dynamics. She also creatively employs AI for ideation, content creation, and meeting preparation, demonstrating adaptability to emerging technologies. 6. Kindness and Continuous Learning as Guiding Values Krista's mantras of "kindness is underrated" and lifelong learning reflect her approach to leadership and coaching. She stresses the importance of being both kind and courageous in providing candid, constructive feedback. The Arete Coach Podcast explores the art and science of executive coaching. That We Might Live Free A Memorial Day Tribute | Arete Coach™ Podcast with Severin Sorensen. A Special tribute featuring Jay Stringham (posthumously), Irving Ray Stringham Jr., and the Stringham family legacy. In this special Memorial Day edition of the Arete Coach™ Podcast, host Severin Sorensen departs from his usual exploration of executive coaching to deliver a solemn tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Titled “That We Might Live Free,” this episode reflects on the true meaning of Memorial Day, honors the story of WWII aviator Irving Ray Stringham Jr., and shares a sacred poem—A Soldier's Last Prayer—written by his younger brother Jay Thorral Stringham. Rather than featuring a conventional guest, this episode centers on a heartfelt tribute to Irving Ray Stringham Jr., a WWII aviator who gave his life over the skies of Germany, and Jay Thorral Stringham, his younger brother and the only survivor among five friends from their neighborhood who went to war together. Haunted by loss and moved by a deep sense of reverence, Jay channeled his grief and gratitude into a poem titled “A Soldier's Last Prayer.” The poem, delivered in this episode, is a poignant reflection of a soldier's internal dialogue on the eve of battle—capturing a blend of fear, faith, sacrifice, and hope. The host received this poem from Jay's daughter, Dolly Hicks, who entrusted its legacy to be shared and remembered. With permission from the family, Severin transforms this heartfelt poem into three powerful musical renditions, each offering a different lens on sacrifice, remembrance, and devotion. This is not a performance—this is an offering. A moment of remembrance. A promise to never forget. Featuring: Historical reflections and family storiesThree musical interpretations of A Soldier's Last PrayerQuotes from JFK, Reagan, Lincoln, Patton, and moreA call to live with gratitude, purpose, and honor

In this mini episode, I'm sharing something that's been on my heart lately: that uncomfortable place where our creative ideas get stuck. You know the one — where you're holding onto something beautiful, but fear, perfectionism, or just plain old procrastination keeps it tucked away. This reflection was sparked by a recent conversation with my sister. She has an amazing idea she's been sitting on since the pandemic, and it got me thinking… How often do we do this to ourselves? How often do we protect our ideas so much that we stop them from growing? In this episode, I talk about the power of small steps — the kind that might seem insignificant at first, but that slowly, steadily builds momentum. If you've been feeling stuck or overwhelmed about where to start, this one's for you. No pressure, just a gentle nudge to begin. Even the tiniest action matters. Let's walk through it together. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. In this episode titled "Mastery in Motion — Journey to Coaching Excellence and Leadership Impact," Severin speaks with Dr. Wai K Leong, an accomplished ICF Master Certified Coach (MCC), ICF Global Board Director, and Founder of JMC Coach Mastery Academy. Recorded on December 20, 2024, this conversation explores Wai K's journey from corporate leadership to coaching mastery, and his influential role in building coaching cultures across Asia and beyond. Recognized as the first Malaysian to receive the MCC credential and a member of the ICF Circle of Distinction (2019), Wai K shares powerful lessons for leaders and executive coaches seeking excellence. Wai K Leong's career began in education and corporate leadership, including significant roles at Intel and the Hong Leong Group, before he transitioned fully into coaching. His early leadership challenges sparked a deep interest in coaching methodologies, greatly influenced by the teachings of Thomas Leonard. In 1999, Wai K founded the JMC Coach Mastery Academy, establishing one of ASEAN's first ICF-accredited institutions with all four accredited coaching programs. His authored works — including Empowering Asian Mindsets Through Coaching — blend coaching mastery with cultural intelligence, empowering leaders to drive transformational change. Key Insights 1. Mastery Beyond Tools: Transforming the Self Wai K emphasizes that true coaching excellence requires a personal transformation — not just mastering techniques, but deep inner work, developing self-awareness, and practicing courageous presence. 2. The Power of Staying Curious He illustrates the importance of "remaining in a state of not knowing," allowing deeper client truths to emerge without rushing to conclusions, a hallmark of masterful coaching. 3. Narratives Shape Leadership Wai K teaches that problems are symptoms of deeper assumptions and beliefs, and coaches must guide clients to reframe unhelpful narratives for true progress. 4. Cultural Bridges in Coaching Addressing the differences between Eastern and Western mindsets, Wai K shares strategies for adapting coaching approaches across cultures, fostering reflection even where expressiveness may not be culturally natural. 5. Lifelong Development and Reflection From mastering presence to reinforcing healthy boundaries, Wai K champions continuous personal development as the foundation of lasting coaching impact. In this mini-episode of 'This Is How We Create,' Martine Severin explores the quiet yet persistent power that drives artists to create even when faced with doubt, external pressures, and self-criticism. She shares a profound revelation from a cinematographer who admitted there were times in her successful career when she simply didn't believe in herself - yet continued moving forward. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. In this episode, titled, "The Business Leader's Guide to AI: Framework-Driven Strategy for the Digital Age," recorded on January 26, 2025, Sorensen shares insights from his groundbreaking presentation at Cambridge Judge Business School Executive Education programme where he discussed his innovative approach to integrating AI with traditional business frameworks. As the author of "The AI Whisperer Frameworks" and several other best selling books on AI implementation for business, Sorensen has developed a unique methodology that bridges the gap between established business strategy and emerging AI capabilities, making complex AI applications accessible to non-technical business leaders. In this compelling episode, Sorensen reveals how his layered prompt journey approach transforms traditional business analysis through AI integration. Using a real-world example of Frank Pepe's Pizzeria, he demonstrates how combining multiple frameworks - from company wikis to Blue Ocean Strategy - creates a comprehensive business analysis system. His layered prompt journey with strategic business frameworks, along with his successful books and AI-generated music ventures, showcases the versatility of his framework-based approach. What sets Sorensen's methodology apart is not just the use of AI or traditional business frameworks, but the innovative way he structures these elements into an educational journey that business leaders can follow to enhance their strategic thinking. Strategic Framework Integration: The episode illuminates how coaches can help clients move beyond basic AI implementation to strategic integration. Sorensen's layered approach demonstrates that effective AI usage isn't just about good prompts - it's about building a comprehensive strategic thinking process that combines traditional business frameworks with AI capabilities. This provides coaches with a structured method for helping clients develop more sophisticated AI strategies. Educational Leadership Development: Sorensen's framework-based methodology offers coaches a new paradigm for developing leaders in the AI era. By breaking down complex AI implementations into structured, framework-based approaches, coaches can help their clients build confidence in using AI while maintaining focus on strategic business objectives. This educational component is crucial for helping leaders bridge the gap between traditional business strategy and AI implementation. Process Innovation and Change Management: The discussion of agentic AI and the insurance industry example highlights how coaches can guide clients through transformational change. By showing how AI can reduce a two-week process to three hours while improving accuracy, coaches can help clients understand both the potential and limitations of AI implementation. This balanced approach helps leaders maintain perspective on AI as a tool for enhancement rather than replacement of human judgment.
