Welcome Friends and thank you for connecting with us for another wonderful episode of CWC! Join me as I catch up with my favorite Outlaw Queen of Finland Mikaela Finne! Truth be told, Finne was born and spent her childhood on the coast of Finland in Vaasa, and now hails from Stockholm, Sweden. Finne actually found as much inspiration in heavy metal as she did the country genre during her youth, the rebellious spirit she found in both prompting her to pursue her musical passion. Like her contemporaries Sarah Shook and Lydia Loveless, Finne's emotive vibrato is its own instrument, adding an undeniable passion to her songs and making lines like “I've lost count, how many times you've broken my heart“ even more impactful. “The country music comes from my dad,” she explains, recalling his love for Dolly Parton and Creedence. “The word ‘outlaw', for me, [means] you do something that you love regardless of what anybody else thinks about what you're doing. … When I was a teenager, the music and the heavy metal that I listened to were totally outlaw.”For More on Mikaela check out https://www.mikaelafinne.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crazywomencountry/support

It's rare that I get to have a conversation where I become best friends with someone recorded, but sometimes that's what having a podcast is all about. I knew when I first met Blake that he was a super cool dude, but it wasn't until this conversation that we realized how much our musical journeys, and tastes were aligned. It was this conversation that made me start thinking about having Blake produce my next record and then a few months later he did produce my next record (more on that later). Enjoy this hang with my bud Blake Tallent. If you'd like to keep up with Blake, give him a follow on instagram. Be sure to check out the new record form Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. Blake's guitar work on It Is masterful, and it goes with River's amazing songwriting so well. Blake has worked with these artists in recent years as well: MYFEVER, MIGHTMARE, Dustin Price, Logan Pilcher, Landry Lowrimore, Supermoon, Weston T. It is easy to take for granted having access to almost all recorded music in existence. But having a collection of physical copies of your favorite music makes you realize how special it is. So today we are featuring two albums from each of our collections.First up, Sidelong by Sarah Shook & the Disarmers. This debut album immediately grabbed Danny's attention upon hearing it, and he has been following bandleader River Shook through lineup changes and side projects ever since. Check it out if you want catchy, well-written, outlaw country style bangers and ballads. Then we'll talk Mitski, who similarly has had a very consistent output. Her 4th studio album has one of her most iconic songs, but we'll talk about how all of her albums have at least one standout pop banger for the ages. This one is full of Pixies-esque loud-quiet-loud rock tunes, mixed with some art-rock / electronic influences. Plus, emotional lyrics that could just as easily be found in a book of poetry.Since buying music directly from the artist is the best way to support them, here are links to buy these albumsPuberty 2SidelongSongs featured in this episode:Make It Up To MamaFuck UpYour Best American GirlDan the DancerComing up:Bonus9. Today's Song of the Day is “Revelations” from Sarah Shook & The Disarmers's album Revelations, out now.
Hey there, cowpokes! This time around I interview River Shook about their new album with Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, Revelations. What's that now? Well, we get into River coming out as nonbinary, changing their name…and still touring under their given name. We'll also talk about their growing confidence as they continue into sobriety, taking the helm as a producer for their own projects as well as Izzy Rider's, and why their latest album Revelations kicks so much ass. Thanks to the Nashville Scene for printing an excerpt of our conversation. Check out John Rodney's Deers, Queers, and Carolina Twang playlist I mentioned at the end of the show. This is Episode 140 and our guest is River Shook. Known professionally by their birth name Sarah, River is the lead singer and songwriter for their bands Sarah Shook and the Disarmers and Mightmare. Y'all, if you have listened to this show for any amount of time you know how much I love River and their work. This is their second appearance on The Marinade. The first was way back in 2018 ahead of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers show in Orlando, FL. A LOT has happened for them (and for me) since that talk as you will hear in this episode. We caught up with River at the inaugural AVLFest in Asheville, North Carolina ahead of their incredible set at the legendary Orange Peel. Sarah is a mother, activist, musician, and proud member and advocate in the LGBTQIA+ community and is at the forefront of the modern queer country scene. The band has taken huge sonic and creative leaps from their last album Years.Mightmare - Sonically, there are a few things we got right in the ‘90s: stompy, rage-fueled queer bands; hazy, uber-pedaled guitar; poeticism to be yelled full-chested towards the windshields of our 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) hand vehicles. More generally, there was also a lot we got wrong: conversations on mental health, non-conventional identities, issues of accessibility and opportunity, etc. Sarah Shook's new solo project, Mightmare, finds a way to roll those sounds we couldn't live without into a response about the issues we couldn't live with, confronting personal habits and rules in the process. Loved for their work in Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, Shook's Cruel Liars brings their crispy clean, country-twanged vocals to the table alongside a furiously urgent need to express themselves independently. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Welcome to the Merry Month of Debts-cember!Part 1 - Top 10 Albums of 2022 - On this week's show, we spend quality time with the records that sparked joy, inspired us to get out of bed, face the day & conquer the world while the world continued to rage on like an unholy dumpster fire. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
Today, we're speaking with one Scout Gillett, from Brooklyn, NY by way of Kansas City, MO. Scout is a musician and runs her own booking agency called Road Dog Booking. Her atmospheric and contemplative debut record titled “no roof no floor” is out now via Captured Tracks, and at the time of our conversation in November 2022, wrapped up a tour in support of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, and celebrated a release party for “no roof no floor” at the record Bar in KC with The Whiffs, Blanky, and Magic Marty. The music of Scout Gillett is very difficult to pin down sonically, and I personally believe that's a very good place to land for an artist. If you enjoy the musical stylings of Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Mazzy Star, and Patty Smith, Scout has a seat at that table. And, I highly recommend catching her upcoming solo tour on the West Coast through the month of December, starting on Dec 7 at The Firehouse in Joshua Tree, CA, dear listeners. For our conversation, we will be discussing The Man Who Died in His Boat, the 9th studio album by American “experimental pop” musician Liz Harris under the moniker, Grouper, which was released on Monday, February 4, 2013. This record consists of outtakes from the previous years, when she was in the process of recording Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill.Enjoy the conversation!
A few things for the many who love Sarah Shook & The Disarmers…Number one, get in line. Number two, relax. They didn’t break up; they’ve got tour dates starting up again in late January. Number three, and most importantly, you might’ve slept on Shook’s still-sprouting solo project, Mightmare. In another victory for the queer music […]
On this week's show, we... spend quality time with new records from Plains, Cory Branan & Mightmare bid adieu to Low drummer & vocalist Mimi Parker hold a musical memorial for a friend who left way to soon All this & much, much less!
This week's guest is River (a.k.a. Sarah) Shook. As the bandleader and namesake of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Shook has ardently toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. They've released some excellent albums, including Nightroamer, which came out on Thirty Tigers in February. Following the release of that acclaimed album and ample touring in support of the record, Shook's "dark pop" project called Mightmare just put out its debut album on Kill Rock Stars last week. Before Shook and company hit the road for the first Mightmare tour (including an Oct. 29 show at Cactus Club), they spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about hitting the road in a big way again, releasing two drastically different albums on two respected labels in the same calendar year and how their recent run of European shows went. Naturally, the conversation also moved to Shook's musical history. Over the course of the discussion, Shook talked about growing up in a religious household and only being allowed to listen to worship and classical music, teaching themself to play guitar on an acoustic borrowed from a friend, the origin of early projects that eventually morphed into The Disarmers, and some of their favorite experiences from their career. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Mightmare ("Easy").
The pandemic takes its toll on everyone in different ways and Sarah Shook is not unique in that it yielded a new record, but this music was a new sort of fruit from a fresh vine. Sarah's delivery and metrics have up to now hewed to an 'outlaw country' quilt but these songs stood out from their work with Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. They leaned towards pop, yes, but a spartan and economized version of smart indie rock with melodies that also dovetail their country roots. The result is a new band Mightmare and the accompanying debut album Cruel Liars (Kill Rock Stars) due October 14th '22 with tours to follow. It's been a dusty road for this ex-bartender, atheist, vegan, pansexual and now sober singer/songwriter, but the future is very bright indeed.

North Carolina country artist Sarah Shook & The Disarmers released their latest album, Nightroamer, in February. In this episode, hear Sarah talk about being LGTBQ in country music, getting sober, and the first time they met a non-binary person.
Duwaun made a trek out to chat with the homie Jon Watkins! The two met while working at the same spot and found a shared love for music. This is the classic Country Brothers banter you've come to expect with all the tangents, Twin Peaks love, and 90s nu-metal references. Listen and learn how Jon got into country music and his thoughts on five songs picked by Duwaun. And for the FIRST TIME in Country Brothers canon we have TWO live music performances from Jon. He first plays Good As Gold by Sarah Shook & the Disarmers then an acoustic rendition of St. Anger by Metallica to close the show! You can now support us on Patreon! This week Danny and Tyler discuss the phenomenal songwriting and gut-busting honky tonk sound of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. The North Carolina five-piece band is still a relatively new presence in the country music/alt country scene, but we think if you like barn burners you're gonna like 'em. We especially think you'll enjoy our song of the week, "New Ways to Fail," a brutally blunt, scream-along honky tonk tune.In addition to talking about Sarah Shook and the talented members of The Disarmers, Tyler and Danny discuss country and punk's intertwined history, Sarah's activism, and (once again) a few choice phrases that would make excellent titles for ZZ Top b-sides.Here's the other recommendations for anyone looking to check out more of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers:Dwight YoakamThe NailYearsNo NameKeep The Home Fires Burnin'Good as GoldHeal MeDamned If I Do, Damned If I Don'tStrangerFollow the link to keep up with which songs are being added to our Ultimate Country Playlist on Spotify, now including the "New Ways to Fail": https://tinyurl.com/takethispodplaylist And now on TIDAL!https://t.co/MHEvOz2DOAFor everything else:https://linktr.ee/takethispodandshoveit
