THE CURE – Alone - Songs of a Lost World THE HANGING STARS - Sweet Light - On A Golden Shore CHRISTOPHER OWENS - Beautiful Horses - I Wanna Run Barefoot Through Your Hair SARAH SOOK & THE DISARMERS – Dogbane - Revelations WAXAHATCHEE – Crowbar - Tigers Blood THE BEVIS FROND - Here For The Other One - Focus on Nature THE COURETTES - Here I Come - The Soul of…The Faboulous Courettes JACK WHITE - That´s How I´m Feeling - No Name F.J. It's rare that I get to have a conversation where I become best friends with someone recorded, but sometimes that's what having a podcast is all about. I knew when I first met Blake that he was a super cool dude, but it wasn't until this conversation that we realized how much our musical journeys, and tastes were aligned. It was this conversation that made me start thinking about having Blake produce my next record and then a few months later he did produce my next record (more on that later). Enjoy this hang with my bud Blake Tallent. If you'd like to keep up with Blake, give him a follow on instagram. Be sure to check out the new record form Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. It is easy to take for granted having access to almost all recorded music in existence. But having a collection of physical copies of your favorite music makes you realize how special it is. So today we are featuring two albums from each of our collections.First up, Sidelong by Sarah Shook & the Disarmers. This debut album immediately grabbed Danny's attention upon hearing it, and he has been following bandleader River Shook through lineup changes and side projects ever since. Check it out if you want catchy, well-written, outlaw country style bangers and ballads. Then we'll talk Mitski, who similarly has had a very consistent output. Her 4th studio album has one of her most iconic songs, but we'll talk about how all of her albums have at least one standout pop banger for the ages. This one is full of Pixies-esque loud-quiet-loud rock tunes, mixed with some art-rock / electronic influences. Plus, emotional lyrics that could just as easily be found in a book of poetry.Since buying music directly from the artist is the best way to support them, here are links to buy these albumsPuberty 2SidelongSongs featured in this episode:Make It Up To MamaFuck UpYour Best American GirlDan the DancerComing up:Bonus9. Well, we get into River coming out as nonbinary, changing their name…and still touring under their given name. We'll also talk about their growing confidence as they continue into sobriety, taking the helm as a producer for their own projects as well as Izzy Rider's, and why their latest album Revelations kicks so much ass. This is Episode 140 and our guest is River Shook. Known professionally by their birth name Sarah, River is the lead singer and songwriter for their bands Sarah Shook and the Disarmers and Mightmare. Y'all, if you have listened to this show for any amount of time you know how much I love River and their work. This is their second appearance on The Marinade. The first was way back in 2018 ahead of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers show in Orlando, FL. A LOT has happened for them (and for me) since that talk as you will hear in this episode. We caught up with River at the inaugural AVLFest in Asheville, North Carolina ahead of their incredible set at the legendary Orange Peel. I have to say a huge thanks to Wicked Weed Brewing and Worthwhile Sounds who sponsored the festival and Victory Lap Media for inviting us to cover AVLFest.  Support The Marinade on Patreon. Sarah is a mother, activist, musician, and proud member and advocate in the LGBTQIA+ community and is at the forefront of the modern queer country scene. The band has taken huge sonic and creative leaps from their last album Years.Mightmare - Sonically, there are a few things we got right in the ‘90s: stompy, rage-fueled queer bands; hazy, uber-pedaled guitar; poeticism to be yelled full-chested towards the windshields of our 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) hand vehicles. More generally, there was also a lot we got wrong: conversations on mental health, non-conventional identities, issues of accessibility and opportunity, etc. Sarah Shook's new solo project, Mightmare, finds a way to roll those sounds we couldn't live without into a response about the issues we couldn't live with, confronting personal habits and rules in the process. Loved for their work in Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, Shook's Cruel Liars brings their crispy clean, country-twanged vocals to the table alongside a furiously urgent need to express themselves independently. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Today, we're speaking with one Scout Gillett, from Brooklyn, NY by way of Kansas City, MO. Scout is a musician and runs her own booking agency called Road Dog Booking. Her atmospheric and contemplative debut record titled “no roof no floor” is out now via Captured Tracks, and at the time of our conversation in November 2022, wrapped up a tour in support of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, and celebrated a release party for “no roof no floor” at the record Bar in KC with The Whiffs, Blanky, and Magic Marty. The music of Scout Gillett is very difficult to pin down sonically, and I personally believe that's a very good place to land for an artist. If you enjoy the musical stylings of Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Mazzy Star, and Patty Smith, Scout has a seat at that table. And, I highly recommend catching her upcoming solo tour on the West Coast through the month of December, starting on Dec 7 at The Firehouse in Joshua Tree, CA, dear listeners. For our conversation, we will be discussing The Man Who Died in His Boat, the 9th studio album by American “experimental pop” musician Liz Harris under the moniker, Grouper, which was released on Monday, February 4, 2013. This record consists of outtakes from the previous years, when she was in the process of recording Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill.Enjoy the conversation!

This week's guest is River (a.k.a. Sarah) Shook. As the bandleader and namesake of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Shook has ardently toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. They've released some excellent albums, including Nightroamer, which came out on Thirty Tigers in February. Following the release of that acclaimed album and ample touring in support of the record, Shook's "dark pop" project called Mightmare just put out its debut album on Kill Rock Stars last week. Before Shook and company hit the road for the first Mightmare tour (including an Oct. 29 show at Cactus Club), they spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about hitting the road in a big way again, releasing two drastically different albums on two respected labels in the same calendar year and how their recent run of European shows went. Naturally, the conversation also moved to Shook's musical history. Over the course of the discussion, Shook talked about growing up in a religious household and only being allowed to listen to worship and classical music, teaching themself to play guitar on an acoustic borrowed from a friend, the origin of early projects that eventually morphed into The Disarmers, and some of their favorite experiences from their career. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Mightmare ("Easy").

What can I say about Sarah Shook. She's really one of a kind. A singer, songwriter, guitar player, activist, she really does it all. She has a knack for blending things that seem disparate and making it seem like a natural fit. Honky tonk and skateboarding. She's on it. Raised in a religious fundamentalist home, but an advocate for the LGBTQ community? She's on it. It's really cool. I was super excited to see that she has a new album out and I jumped at the chance to have her on my show. We had a great conversation. I hope you dig it.

This is an episode that I've been looking forward to since before (*both laugh*) was even an idea for a show. I was introduced to Sarah Shook's music when their debut album, Sidelong, was rereleased by Bloodshot Records back in 2017 (it had initially been self-released by their band, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, several years prior but I was waaaay out of the loop at that point). I found Sidelong to be an interesting listen; it felt like it ran a real throwback country-and-western vibe through a little bit of a modern roadhouse filter. It certainly wasn't like much else I listened to at the time, and Sidelong and its follow-up, 2018's Years, even stood out amongst the large quantity of Bloodshot artists I'd been listening to for a long time (Cory Branan, Scott H. Biram, Murder By Death, Lydia Loveless, etc).  The Disarmers went into the studio in California to record their third album in early 2020, just as the world was on the cusp of shutting down for the foreseeable future. Label issues and supply chain issues and inability to tour issues got in the way got in the way, as they're wont to do. Fast forward to 2022 and Sarah Shook is on the cusp of releasing their third album. It's called Nightroamer and it's on a new label (Thirty Tigers) and it's really, REALLY good. Fans of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers will certainly find plenty of recognizable sounds, but there are left turns and even-further-left turns and some new and different subject matter. All of that results in an immensely compelling listen, easily their best output to date. We caught up with Sarah to talk at length about the new album; from finishing the recording roughly a week before the pandemic became "a thing" in the States, to the obvious label issues, to the choice of when to actually release it to the world. We also talked about some of the subject matter; parts of the album were written after Shook got sober, and obviously created a very different writing process for them this time around. Perhaps most compellingly, we talked about their increasing involvement as a vocal force to be reckoned with, advocating for the elevating of queer and non-white voices in the country music world. Oh, and we talked about their growing up in strictly religious household and teaching themselves to play guitar and write songs in spite of having no popular music frame of reference, a concept that is truly mind-boggling to me. Nightroamer is due out February 18th. Pre-orders are still available here: https://www.disarmers.com/store/Music-c23349544 You can also check out the Disarmers' videos and live performances and more on their YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/c/SarahShooktheDisarmers/videos (*both laughs*) theme song is an excerpt from [laughs] track "Hurts To Laugh." © KALI MASI 2021 ℗ Take This To Heart Records 2021

For part two of this month’s new release series it’s the usual formula. New records by veteran acts mix with brand new artists, along with a few tracks from featured reissues. So you get the brand new Sarah Shook & The Disarmers single shortly after a set of demos from the two new Pretenders box sets. The return of The Professionals mixes with the up and coming Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week we catch up with acclaimed roots-rocker Sarah Shook. For most of the last decade, Sarah has been making cut-to-the-bone country music of her own aching outlaw variety - first with her early band The Devil and now with her seasoned group of sensitive twang-rock shitkickers - The Disarmers. Homeschooled in deeply religious seclusion around upstate New York and North Carolina, Shook largely only heard classical composers growing up. As a loner creative teenager trying to process her hidden bi-sexuality, she described hearing Elliott Smith and Belle & Sebastian as revelatory - finally someone felt like her and found a way to share it with the world. But it was after encountering the raw honesty in the songs of Johnny Cash that she found a purpose and a place for her achy-voiced folk songs. With a little encouragement from her longtime lead guitarist, who saw how powerful her presence (and her songs) could be on stage, an openly reticent Shook took the leap and started playing professionally in 2013. She gained national attention with her stellar back-to-back albums Sidelong and Years - which caught the attention of famed outlaw country label Bloodshot Records (they signed her) and sent her on a relentless round of touring around the world. With confessional, lived-in songs like “Fuck Up” and “New Ways To Fail” Sarah is a master of getting to the point - processing her tough transition to sobriety with grace, humor and wit, and much like her hero Johnny Cash, she suffers no fools when it comes to love and its tricky late-night detours. With her signature half-smile, half-grimace candor Shook sings about another love affair gone wrong: “I need this shit like I need another hole in my head.” Stick around to the end of the episode to hear a live-from-home acoustic rendition of her deliciously twangy kiss-off “Gold As Gold.”

And as we realize we all just wanna lay in the back of the van and go on road trips, we also mention… dancing on the beach, very very strict conservative parents, I’m sure it was lyrical content, the movie star, movies warp you in a different way, Gorman Bechard, these little homemade speaker boxes, Werner Herzog, rolling numbers, way out of time, Interpol, no… the movie is terrible - you just fast forward to that part, I like the cover to this, What it Takes: film en douze tableaux, record collections, Frank Zappa, Sarah Shook and the Devil, hippy parents, having your own documentary, homeschooled, singing with your forehead, listen to cassette tapes, Mary Ann, the precursor to raves, the zither, Grizzly Man, Oscar loser, a different kind of Tom Cruise movie, 6x9 Jensens, it’s like trying to pick out chips in the chip aisle, head buried in the sand, very little guidance, Antics and cross-promoting with Pepsi. “Oh my gosh… so I saw that when I was a kid - and I became obsessed with it! Set 2....On this day in 1960 PSYCHO from Alfred Hitchcock debuted so why not mark the day with The Sonics from 5 years later with their punk offering: "Psycho".....Porter Wagoner had a pretty shitty time of it when he came home to find his wife with another man....so he tells us about the "Cold Hard Facts Of Life". Keeping with the [Alt] Country vibe is Sarah Shook & the Disarmers whose songs take on the usual country spin on shitty relationships, bad decisions, and excessive alcohol consumption for damn good reasons "The bottle never lets me down"...time to pick up the pace with "My baby likes to boogaloo" via a 45 on Tru-Glo-Town / 1965 by Don Gardner. Set 3....we're visiting Brisbane Australia and The Saints "Know Your Product". The Saints were one of the first punk bands predating The Sex Pistols of the UK by about 6 months....Angela McClusky checks in from Scotland with "It's Been Done"...what a set of great pipes from 2004! Dave Pike asks the question "Why Not?" off his LP from 1961 called Pike's Peak and The Clutters cover Gloria Jones classic "Tainted Love".. Set 4 and out...… Abunai! 's take on The Stones "Citadel" leads into Yo La Tengo's "Black Flowers" off of "I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass"... That covers it for this week......
