In Folge 46 von „Deutschland, Du kannst das“ spricht unser Host Holger Klein mit dem Ökonomen Carl Mühlbach, Geschäftsführer der NGO Fiscal Future, über die Herausforderungen und Anforderungen für eine zukunftsfähige Sozial- und Finanzpolitik. Er betont die Bedeutung, junge Menschen in finanzielle Entscheidungsprozesse einzubeziehen sowie die Notwendigkeit von Investitionen in Bildung, Infrastruktur und Klimaschutz. Mühlbach hält eine Debatte über die Frage sozialer Ungleichheiten für unabdingbar. Zentrale Frage ist dabei, „wie wir Mittel und Wohlstand in unserer Gesellschaft verteilen können“, so der Ökonom. Wenn zum Beispiel die beiden reichsten Familien in Deutschland mehr als die ärmere Hälfte der Bevölkerung (41,5 Millionen Menschen) besitzen, dann müsse die Verteilungsfrage gestellt werden. Von entscheidender Bedeutung ist daher eine gerechtere Steuerpolitik, um wegweisend in die soziale Infrastruktur zu investieren. Bei Personen mit Milliardenvermögen stellt sich zudem die Frage nach ihrem politischen Einfluss: „Extreme Vermögen gehen auch immer mit extremer politischer Macht und Einfluss einher“, betont Mühlbach. „Wir sehen an Elon Musk in den USA, wozu es führt und wie sehr es eine Demokratie gefährdet, wenn Milliardäre so viel Macht erhalten. Das sollte uns auch in Deutschland zu denken geben.“ Mühlbach fordert eine Reformierung des Sozialstaats durch spürbare Investitionen, um schließlich auch die wirtschaftliche Situation unterstützungsbedürftiger Menschen zu verbessern. Eine Schuldenbremse ist hierbei hinderlich, da sie wegweisende Investitionen in Bildung, Infrastruktur und Klimaschutz für die Zukunft junger Menschen und der Gesellschaft insgesamt unterbindet. Niemand hat etwas davon, „wenn wir in 20 Jahren in einem Land leben, wo nichts mehr funktioniert, wo die Bahn noch unpünktlicher ist, wo wir ständig Stau haben, weil die Straßen alle marode sind, wo wir hohe Arbeitslosigkeit und keine Wertschöpfung haben, weil unser Bildungssystem den Bach heruntergegangen ist und wir keine vernünftig ausgebildeten Fachkräfte mehr finden. Dann hilft es nicht, wenn wir ein bisschen weniger Schulden haben als sonst“, so Mühlbach

In ON JUNETEENTH, Gordon-Reed combines her own scholarship with a personal and intimate reflection of an overlooked holiday that has suddenly taken on new significance in a post-George Floyd world. As Gordon-Reed writes, “It is staggering that there is no date commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.” Yet, Texas—the last state to free its slaves—has long acknowledged the moment on June 19, 1865, when US Major General Gordon Granger proclaimed from his headquarters in Galveston that slavery was no longer the law of the land. ON JUNETEENTH takes us beyond the stories of Gordon-Reed's childhood, providing a Texan's view of the long, non-traditional road to a national recognition of the holiday. Gordon-Reed presents the saga of a frontier defined as much by the slave plantation owner as the mythic cowboy, rancher, or oilman. Reworking the “Alamo” narrative, she shows that enslaved Blacks—in addition to Native Americans, Anglos, and Tejanos—formed the state's makeup from the 1500s, well before Africans arrived in Jamestown. That slave-and race-based economy not only defined this fractious era of Texas independence, but precipitated the Mexican-American War and the resulting Civil War. A commemoration of Juneteenth and the fraught legacies of slavery that still persist, On Juneteenth is a stark reminder that the fight for equality is ongoing. Annette Gordon-Reed is the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University. Author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, she lives in New York and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Lawrence Jackson is the author of the award-winning books Chester B. Himes: A Biography and The Indignant Generation: A Narrative History of African American Writers and Critics. In 2002 he published Ralph Ellison: Emergence of Genius, 1913-1952 and he has written a memoir on race and family history called My Father's Name: A Black Virginia Family after the Civil War. Professor Jackson earned a PhD in English and American literature at Stanford University, and he is a 2019 Guggenheim fellowship awardee. A Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of English and History at Johns Hopkins University, he founded the Billie Holiday Project for Liberation Arts to create opportunities for enhanced intellectual and artistic relations between Hopkins and Baltimore City, his hometown. This month, it was my pleasure to chat with former U.S. Navy Damage Controlman Carl. A DCman is essentially a first responder/firefighter onboard U.S. Navy Vessels. Our paths never crossed professionally, but I did learn that he served aboard the USS Donald Cook 10 years after I did. “Rififi” loosely defined as  “a rumble among men” or “trouble/violent conflict/show of force” is a 1955 French movie directed by Jules Dassin after he was black listed in Hollywood. The film is based on a portion of a novel by Auguste Le Brenton. Starring Jean Servais as the lead character “Tony” and the other members of the heist crew, Carl Möhner as “Jo”, Robert Manuel as “Mario” and the director himself in the role of “Cesar”, who apparently was paid the equivalent of $8,000 for the roles of Director, Writer, and Actor. The money was extremely well spent as this is considered by many one of the best crime/heist film noir films of all time. Mr. Dassin won the Best Director prize at Cannes in 1995. And the film was nominated for the National Board of Review for Best Foreign Film. The influence this film has on subsequent heist films is clear. Bob also recommends watching “The Asphalt Jungle” for another tightly directed and acted noir crime/heist film that may have had an influence on “Rififi”. We both really enjoyed the movie and would place it near the top of our list as one of the best films we’ve seen.  Just a reminder that we discuss the ending of the films we review and we definitely would spoil the plot for anyone that hasn’t seen the film. Researcher Jon Ramsey, PhD is Professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences within the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. His study of animals focuses on nutrition as it relates to obesity and aging. The goal of his research is to understand the biological mechanisms that contribute to the aging process and to develop dietary interventions that promote healthy aging and weight loss. Distinctive features, a huge fan following, and a filmmaker that truly impacted cinema, I think it's a great option if his estate would ever sign off of the idea.” Ivan H suggests a Japanese masters series Kurosawa, Ozu, Miyazaki, & Takahata. Aaron from Kentucky: “One person that immediately sprang to mind was John Carpenter. I believe he has a unique look that would translate well to the toy and enough of a cult following to make for a popular Funko Pop.  Another director who would look good as a Funko Pop is Spike Lee. Put him in some wild colors and add the glasses and it will fly off shelves!  And finally, I'd like to see a Funko Pop to honor the late great Stanley Kubrick. All that changed when her husband, Joshua, was killed in a helicopter crash. Several people suggested she sell her husband’s large firm and that she "go home."
