Captive Audience is more than just a movie podcast. It taps into why we watch movies--to keep up with what's new in pop culture, to experience something for the first time, and to share that experience with friends and loved ones. Captive Audience is a reaction video in podcast form with hosts Edwin Janes, Sean Roney, and Alex Ward. The unique format allows us to keep up with what's new, catch up on classics, and share films that are near and dear to our hearts. Movies can feel very solitary, especially if we're just watching Netflix at home. But at times the best parts of movies comes from sharing them with other people. It can be laughing in the theater with the rest of the audience, debating with friends, or simply asking, 'So, what did you think?' once the credits roll. This podcast gets at why we watch movies, and as cliche as it may sound, how shared experiences bring people together.
With Valentine's Day around the corner we head to the streets of Vienna for a magical night in Richard Linklater's Gen X classic Before Sunrise. Sean and Edwin have never had the pleasure of a night out with Jesse and Celine, and we invite you to do the same with us this week. So store your red turtleneck in a locker, give the street poet some pocket change, and talk a bartender into a free bottle of wine while we wander around Austria to celebrate romance! It's raining, and a familiar sad song plays on the radio—this week we're talking about Memories of Murder! Sean and Alex have never seen this cult classic from acclaimed director Bong-Joon Ho, so we fill a photo album with suspects, look people deep in the eyes, and unleash a flurry of flying kicks to track down the killer. So put on your Nices Nikes, don't wear red, and join for this week's episode! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We close out 2024 with one of the great 90's classics - True Romance. As Quentin Tarantino's debut script, this 1993 action/romance/comedy didn't quite land in the box office but has gone on to become a beloved classic. So gas up the purple Caddy, steal drugs from your pimp, and bump up the Elvis while we break down True Romance. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week Sean takes us back to Xanadu in 1941 to watch the (arguably) greatest movie ever made - Citizen Kane. Or is just another old black and white movie? Or is it just a great reason to hear Edwin's old-timey news voice? Either way, it's time to head home for the holidays to find your Rosebud. So buy a struggling newspaper, top off your collection of statues, and fire Mr. Carter while we dive into THE classic movie. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

So grab your shark cages, don your flowing Roman robes, and rub some Coliseum dirt into your hands while we dive into a modern blockbuster. Learn more about your ad choices. Your lucky numbers have come up—this week we're talking about Mary and Max! We send a letter to this stop motion classic from 2009 to see if it knows where babies come from, if it has ever been teased, and if we can share a can of condensed milk. So make yourself a chocolate hot dog, turn on the Noblets, and settle in for this week's episode! Questions, comments, suggestions? Although Halloween is behind us, it follows Edwin. Which is tough, because he does NOT enjoy horror movies. Lucky for us, we have this podcast! We are headed to the suburbs of Detroit to watch the 2014's It Follows. The movie is a dreadful, tense slow burn that takes a silly-sounding premise and delivers a compelling variation of the genre that sticks in your psyche long after the credits roll (at least in our opinion). So fire up your clamshell e-readers, line the pool with retro appliances, and put on some comfy walking shoes to join us for a modern horror classic. Learn more about your ad choices. With Halloween on the horizon, we dial up a classic from 1992 with Death Becomes Her starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, and Goldie Hawn. Alex and Edwin are first-time viewers as we go on a campy, CGI-filled ride through castles, lightning, murder, and the walking dead. So grab your spray paint, twist your neck back around, and take a shot of everlasting life as we break down Robert Zemeckis' surreal black comedy. Learn more about your ad choices. Grab your scarf, this week we have a blind date with Movie 43! Neither Edwin, Alex, or Sean have seen this star-studded yet critically panned comedy from 2013, so we're putting on our superhero costumes and speed dating all the different vignettes. So make some guacamole, turn on the grocery store loudspeaker, and check in to the basketball game for this week's episode! Have thoughts/comments/suggestions for us? This week we're gliding into New York in the cover of darkness to watch John Carpenter's 1981 dystopian adventure Escape From New York. This is a first time viewing for all three of us, and we can't wait to see what awaits us behind the maximum security walls surrounding Manhattan Island. So gas up the cab, put on your eyepatches, and hammer some nails into your bat to join us for this sci-fi/action classic! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week Sean takes us down to the bayou to serve up one of Werner Herzog's more insane and polarizing films - Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. A bizarre gumbo of black comedy, rampant drug addiction, crooked cops, and a massive scoop of Nic Cage turned up to 11; it's a ride through the seedy underbelly of New Orleans that is anything but boring. So round up your imaginary iguanas, empty out those handbags, and jump into the flooded jailhouse with us for a dark and wild ride into the bliss of evil. Learn more about your ad choices. The ocean has chosen you—this week we're watching Moana! Alex has never seen this one and future animated classic, so we're sailing beyond the reef to see how far we'll go. Remember the classic arcade game Street Fighter II? Wasn't it great? The characters and combat felt so unique and cool? Well too bad, because this movie uppercuts all that in the face. In fact, it's so distinctly bad it's achieved cult status for being an accidental masterpiece of "trash art." So get your blue camouflage dry cleaned, wrap up your cage fights with Vega, and lace up a pair of superconducting boots to watch the 1994 dumpster fire that is Street Fighter: The Movie. Here's a link to the story of making Street Fighter that was referenced in the episode. Have thoughts/comments/suggestions for us? Quick, hide this bag of guns and I'll steal you a rug later--this week we're watching The Godfather Part II! Edwin has never seen this cinematic classic so we're flying to Cuba and then reminiscing about coming to America for the story of the rise and fall of the Corleone family. Nearly 35 years ago this month, When Harry Met Sally took the summer box office by storm and the rom-com genre along with it. The 1989 hit has since become the standard to which all "will-they-won't-they" movies are held too, so we're here to revisit what makes it such a beloved film. Since it's such a timeless classic, Edwin hasn't seen it of course. So grab your road trip grapes, dry clean your cable-knit sweaters, and pack some salad dressing on the side while we kick back watch Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan talk about sex. This week on the heels of Father's Day, Sean makes Edwin fill a horse head-sized hole in his viewing resume by sitting down to watch The Godfather. Considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made, Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 masterpiece remains as captivating as it was half a century ago, and we had one shotgun blast of a time revisiting this classic alongside a first timer. So grab some oranges from the produce stand, hide your pistol behind the toilet, and make us some offers we can't refuse while we dive into the Corleone family business. So turn up your radio telescope headphones, decipher 60,000 pages of data, and pop open a box of Cracker Jacks while we ponder these questions! Learn more about your ad choices. Quick--hide the diamonds in that wheelchair cushion--this week we're watching Rumble in the Bronx! "You've listened to a long and complex case, murder in the first degree. Premeditated murder is the most serious charge tried in our criminal courts. You've listened to the testimony, you've had the law read to you and interpreted as it applies in this case, it's now your duty to sit down and try to separate the facts from the fancy." With the judge's words ringing in our ears, we head into the courts this week to make Edwin watch the 1957 classic 12 Angry Men. Sidney Lumet's directing debut remains a foundation of the courtroom drama genre to this day, even though almost nothing is seen in an actual courtroom.
