In this riveting conversation with Dave Stockdale of Nightmare Masterclass, we dive deep into the crumbling foundations of media trust and how dark money shapes our information landscape. The discussion begins with a critical examination of the recent "Chorus" controversy, where progressive influencers took billionaire funding while decrying criticism as "misinformation" – adopting the very tactics they once condemned from the right. What makes this conversation particularly compelling is how it connects these media credibility issues to broader cultural trends in film and entertainment. We explore how modern horror directors like Ari Aster are creating sophisticated works with complex social commentary, only to have critics mischaracterize them through simplistic political lenses. Films like "Eddington" and "Weapons" aren't straightforward propaganda but artistic expressions designed to generate meaningful discourse about society's challenges. The fragmentation of media extends beyond news into entertainment, with streaming services oversaturating the market while younger generations increasingly disconnect from traditional formats entirely. Many Zoomers report they simply don't watch movies, creating separate cultural universes where shared reference points become increasingly rare. This disconnection mirrors the broader social atomization affecting everything from politics to personal relationships.Perhaps most fascinating is our examination of how parasocial relationships are replacing genuine social connections, a trend that Dave describes as potentially "Armageddon-like" in its implications. When people claim "there is no more social, only parasocial," they're describing a fundamentally broken society incapable of collective action or shared understanding.Whether you're concerned about media manipulation, fascinated by horror cinema's evolution, or simply trying to make sense of our increasingly fragmented culture, this conversation offers valuable insights into how we might navigate these challenging times with greater awareness and intentionality.Send us a text Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeSupport the showCrew:Host: C. “Eddington” è l'ultima opera di Ari Aster, che dopo aver esplorato gli orrori familiari e i traumi individuali, alza smisuratamente l'asticella delle proprie ambizioni per indagare la follia collettiva dell'America contemporanea. Timestamp dei film in scaletta:[01:45] Eddington[24:40] After the hunt[38:30] A house of dynamitePer supportarci: ko-fi.com/incompetentipodcastPer contatti: gliincompetenti@gmail.comincompetentipodcast.it

It's interesting though: 'Eddington' and 'One Battle After Another', two big "political" thrillers grappling in different ways with the modern world, have come out this year to much fanfare and controversy. The Party Girls crew takes on Paul Thomas Anderson's epic "taken" tale with revolutionary flavor, One Battle After Another (2025). In this comedic thriller, an aging burnout and former member of revolutionary group The French 75 (Leonardo DiCaprio) must spring into action with the help of his local karate sensei/migrant defense organizer (Benicio del Toro) when his daughter (Chase Infiniti) is kidnapped by an ICE goon/aspiring member of the white power elite (Sean Penn). Did we like the way revolutionaries are portrayed in this movie? One thing's for certain: between this and Eddington, we're all up in the zeitgeist. CINEMA!
Episode 96: Eddington This week on Philosophy in Film, the gang rides into the dust and disinformation of Ari Aster's 2025 neo-Western Eddington. Set during the upheaval of 2020, the film pits Joaquin Phoenix's stoic, conspiracy-prone sheriff Joe Cross against Pedro Pascal's pragmatic mayor Ted Garcia in a small New Mexico town splintered by mask mandates, social media warfare, and secrets. Craig sounds the warning in Producer's Notes (9:59), rallying the posse to get ready; Alain draws the map of conflict in the Beauclair Synopsis (20:57), threading the political grievance, personal betrayal, and escalating paranoia. Chris then steps into Philosopher's Corner (41:16), tuning into the film's narrative pulse. At The Round Table (54:36), the gang debates whether Eddington mirrors our fractured moment or indulges in fever dreams, before Reviews (1:28:46) and Mailbag (1:37:54) bring listener dispatches from the divide. As always, we tackle the philosophical and non-philosophical standoffs within, as every showdown leaves a mark.

In this episode of the Superstructure podcast, Scott Ferguson is joined by independent film scholar Jonathan Haynes to discuss Paul Thomas Anderson's acclaimed new film, One Battle After Another. The conversation centers on the film's contribution to popular political cinema under the authoritarian violence of the second Trump administration. Scott and Jonathan affirm One Battle's unapologetically leftist perspective as a breath of fresh air within a current political climate of despair–a feeling emblematized by films such as Ari Aster's Eddington. Specifically, the episode examines how One Battle, which draws loose inspiration from Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland, deliberately removes specific historical markers to place the story in an ambiguous present of ongoing revolution and counter-revolution. The hosts evaluate One Battle's controversial representation of leftist violence, highlighting the film's focus on countervailing infrastructures in addition to punctuated actions. They also speculate about the meaning of the film's rich aesthetic choices, including the mobile telephoto lenses that transform a conventional car chase into a dizzying allegory of an American culture unclear about its driving motivations and aims. Finally, Scott and Jonathan consider the complex, racialized eroticism between the revolutionary mother and the white-supremacist commander (played by Teyana Taylor and Sean Penn), which gives rise to the central character, Willa (Chase Infinity). Willa, they argue, embodies the entangled, embattled, and yet still hopeful left politics that the film ultimately celebrates.Music: “Yum” from “This Would Be Funny If It Were Happening to Anyone but Me” EP by flirting.flirtingfullstop.bandcamp.com/Twitter: @actualflirting

By far Paul Thomas Anderson's most expensive film, with a budget some four or five times what he's used to, and probably his most accessible, One Battle After Another entertains us enormously and effortlessly without sacrificing the complexity and nuance for which his work is known. Set in an alternate America oppressed by Christofascism, the alternate part is that there's a very active militant revolutionary group, the French 75, setting bombs off and freeing detained minorities. Leonardo DiCaprio is part of it, and sixteen years after the conclusion of his group's activities, their work has entered countercultural legend, but he's become a drug-addicted, paranoid burnout, trying to raise a teenage daughter. When the powers that be come looking for them, they're separated, all hell breaks loose, and he has to step up. José finds One Battle After Another to be the film of the moment, the state of the nation film that Eddington could only dream of being, a powerful, invigorating expression of what ails America and what it means to resist. Mike is more cynical, seeing an element of mockery in the revolution that has no apparent intention to end and is carried out over generations. We love the easygoing style of filmmaking that Anderson seems to have grown into, comparing it to the rigid formality of his early work, and finding that he has a talent for action cinema that's never quite come out before. We also discuss the film's themes of youth and ageing, parenting, the Christian right and more. One Battle After Another is an unmissable film, the kind that fifty years ago would have defined America's national conversation. Cinema no longer holds that level of cultural cachet, sadly, but One Battle After Another is a powerful, energetic, and very funny reminder of what film can do at its best. Recorded on 28th September 2025.
Over the course of his three-decade career, the director Paul Thomas Anderson has dramatized the nineteen-seventies porn industry (“Boogie Nights”), the Californian oil boom (“There Will Be Blood”), and a mid-century London fashion house (“Phantom Thread”). Now he's trained his gaze on present-day America. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss Anderson's latest: the sprawling, surprisingly political blockbuster “One Battle After Another.” They contextualize the new work within his œuvre—and debate what his portrayal of militant left-wing activists and the white-supremacist right has to say about the state of the nation. “I think our present reality has far outstripped most depictions of it,” Schwartz says. “Slipping it into this kind of caper—is that delivering us to somewhere that gets people to think or to look or to feel?”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“One Battle After Another” (2025)“Vineland,” by Thomas Pynchon“Inherent Vice” (2014)“Boogie Nights” (1997)“The Master” (2012)“Punch-Drunk Love” (2002)“There Will Be Blood” (2007)“Phantom Thread” (2017)“ ‘Eddington' and the American Berserk” (The New Yorker)Gil Scott-Heron's “The Revolution Will Not be Televised”New episodes drop every Thursday. A lot can change in a week at the movies. One Battle After Another—the film we crowned as the year's best—has stumbled at the box office, but does that tell the full story? Meanwhile, Dutch cinema is making international headlines, though for all the wrong reasons: AI actors. 【 What We Talked About】 This episode we dove into Ari Aster's latest film "Eddington"—a movie that'll make you want to throw things at the screen, but also can't stop you from obsessively analyzing every frame. The director behind "Midsommar" and "Hereditary" sets his sights on a fictional small American town during the early pandemic chaos of May 2020, wrapping a horror story about social media tearing communities apart in Western film genre. Joaquin Phoenix's old-school sheriff Joe Cross goes head-to-head with Pedro Pascal's liberal mayor in this tiny New Mexico town, while the real winner turns out to be the faceless tech giant that's been planning to build a data center there all along. We used this deeply polarizing film to unpack everything from how BLM got weaponized on social media, to the toxic rules of cancel culture, to how conspiracy theories spread like wildfire through small-town neighbor networks. The ending is both alarming and defeatist: while everyone was busy fighting online, the real crisis—AI and Big Tech—had already quietly taken over. 【Support Us】 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Join our membership program: https://theamericanroulette.com/paid-membership/ Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/americanroulette Business Inquiries and fan mail: american.roulette.pod@gmail.com 【Timeline】 01:12 - Vibe Shift: Zeitgeist transformation from pandemic to now 03:44 - Film plot overview: Political showdown in a New Mexico town 07:57 - Did Ari Aster put his thumb on the scale in the fight between the sheriff and the mayor 16:57 - The social media-ization of BLM and commodification of "good trouble" 23:34 - How social media rules make everyone look bad 35:36 - How trauma becomes currency in the discourse 40:07 - Xiao Lan's "fake news field research" 46:31 - The film's nihilistic ending 49:31 - "SolidGoldMagikarp" Easter egg 52:18 - Real impact of AI data centers on American small towns 59:24 - Do artists have the right to create "cruel" art? 1:11:12 - Real social issues plaiguing today's America in "Eddington" 【Who We Are】 The American Roulette is a podcast dedicated to helping the Chinese-speaking community understand fast-changing U.S. politics. Jamie is joined by Tom Sexton and Tarence Ray of the Trillbilly Workers Party podcast to talk about Ari Aster's polarizing new film, Eddington. Set in a fictional southwestern town in 2020, the Hereditary director's latest offering has a lot going on: Joaquin Phoenix as MAGA sheriff, Pedro Pascal as neolib mayor, Emma Stone as goth girlfriend, and Austin Butler as cult leader. Also: hysterical SJWs, noisy 'splosions, and a high noon showdown set to Katy Perry. Is it a timely critique of the monsters people create in their minds, or lib-brained 'both sides' slop? Jamie and her esteemed guests discuss. Lara and Carey are back together in the stu once more, discussing Eddington and Carey's loose interpretation of “watching a movie.” On She's Startin', they discuss Cracker Barrel's misguided (or genius) rebrand, the controversy that followed, Cracker Barrel's unparalleled unifying power, and the arduous public transit journey to one of the few open Cracker Barrels in Southern California. They also talk about Will Smith's terrifying use of AI in his post-slap redemption tour, and why he still has a chance to avoid the Flop Abyss. In Armagayddon, they talk Gen Alphas' shameless farting in school, why they've earned guilt-free flatulence, and millennials' own farting privilege; they also discuss one woman's battle with a creeping mold that's threatening her marriage. In Bravissimo, they talk Karen Huger's early release from prison next week and why Potomac's Grand Dame deserves to booze in peace. Then in Ask Us Anything, one thirty-something gay questions his own childless existence in comparison to his straight married friends, and whether or not he should feel behind the heteronormative times.Chapters:00:00:00 Carey "watched" Eddington00:13:35 She's Startin'00:42:01 Armagayddon01:20:32 Bravissimo01:22:47 Ask Us AnythingLara's Posh Live!
