Get ready for another dive into the weird and wonderful world of Nicolas Cage. This time with a bonus Werner Herzog to bring Nic Cage crashing back down to Earth in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009). Is this a remake of the Abel Ferrara movie or was it just a cynical attempt to cash in on a well-known title? What is the plot of this film? IS THERE a plot to this film? Why is Nic Cage doing a voice… sometimes? And why are reptiles a major part of this movie? All that plus the question: Is there a Nicolas Cage character you would have a drink with? Season 9 runs until 24th February. Would you like to see the full lineup for season 9? The only place we announce our schedule is over on Patreon and you don't even need to be a paying member. Jerry McGlothlin joins us once again to discuss Bad Lieutenant (1992) directed by Abel Ferrara and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009), directed by Werner Herzog. Two very different takes on utter corruption and the possibility (or not) of redemption, from two very different, but both visionary film-makers. A double feature for the ages with two towering central performances triggers one of our most enjoyable discussions so far - from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Bad Lieutenant by skipping ahead to the 1:09:48 mark, and for Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans by skipping ahead to 1:52:38. Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions with Jason P. Woodbury. We're kicking off our 2024 season with two very special guests: Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy, discussing their love of and tribute to R.E.M.'s Murmur, which they are taking on tour in February. You no doubt know Shannon from his movies and shows, including some of our favorites like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Midnight Special, The Shape of Water, and Boardwalk Empire. In his essential read Every Man For Himself and God Against All, director Werner Herzog calls Shannon “the most gifted actor of his generation.” As for Narducy, you've heard him with Superchunk, Bob Mould, Split Single, and many other projects. Together, they've staged tributes to T. Rex, The Smiths, Lou Reed, and Neil Young and more, and now, they turn their attention to R.E.M. It was a pleasure to speak with these two about the Athens, Georgia legends, along with detours into topics like Lou Reed, Sunny Day Real Estate, and best of all, Michael's run in with Bob Dylan. This week on Bad First Impression, filmmaker and Nicolas Cage completist Alex Campo and I sit down to discuss a depraved, frenzied, and extremely underrated entry in Cage's career. Rounding out my accidental thematic trilogy of Films with Unwieldy Titles Watched at the Nitehawk, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans screened at the Prospect Park location on October 20, 2023. Afterwards, we discuss Cage's newest film Dream Scenario, how it fits into his body of work, and what the future holds for him. Discussion topics include: Is there a "the" in the title of this movie, and does shortening it somehow make it worse? Does combing through Cage's extensive indie and direct-to-video catalogue give any insight into his appeal as a mainstream leading man? Should the flaming motorcycle in the Ghost Rider duology make the movies count towards the alarming number of Nicolas Cage movies in which he drives a flaming car? All this and more! In the 2000s, Eva Mendes was wildly considered one of the hottest up-and-coming actresses in Hollywood. Drop-dead gorgeous, with terrific acting talent to match, she started small, with a role in the Steven Seagal flick, Exit Wounds, that was looped by another actress. But, her part opposite Denzel Washington in Training Day drew a lot of attention, and soon she was everywhere. She entered the Fast & Furious franchise playing an undercover DEA agent in 2 Fast 2 Furious, a role she reprised at the end of Fast 5, becoming a fan favorite of the series many are hoping she returns to. The movie that made her a star, arguably, was her role opposite Will Smith in the romantic comedy Hitch, which was a box office smash.Meanwhile, her performances in James Gray's We Own the Night and Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans drew raves. At the same time, she also stole the show in a comedic performance opposite Will Ferrell in the Adam McKay movie, The Other Guys. In 2012, she starred opposite Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond the Pines, and the two eventually got married and started a family. Mendes' last role, to date, was in a movie Gosling directed called Lost River. Mendes, who's recently begun reappearing on talk shows, said that she opted to focus on her family, with her career taking a backseat. However, she seems open to making another movie if the right project comes along. Mendes' choice to stop making movies was her own, and in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we examine her career and potential return to the big screen.

It's week two of Cage-A-Palooza 2022, and boy did Travis and Phil Rood watch an interesting one. Directed by Werner Herzog, is it a sequel to the 1992 Harvey Keitel movie? A spiritual successor? Or did some producer just decide they wanted that title because it was a movie about a corrupt cop. Either way, it was something. Thanks go out to Audie Norman (@OddlyNormalOne) for the album art. After a too-long hiatus, Nathan and Clint are back, with a new episode and new approach! Since Travolta and Cage's output are going to, well, dramatically differ in pace in the most recent decade of their careers, we're gonna double up on Cage movies, and let Travolta catch up as we reach the years he puts out new flicks. But that also gives us time to zero in on some late-career classics, including Werner Herzog's hypnotic crime drama Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans! Easily one of the most bugfuck movies of the 2000s, this very-much-not-a-sequel to the Abel Ferrara flick sees Nicolas Cage as a strungout New Orleans detective working a murder case while jonesing for his next fix the entire time. It's as nuts as you'd expect, but also drips with seedy atmosphere and lurid charm -- aided, of course, by Cage at his bug-eyed best. Luckily, our souls don't dance along on this odyssey, as New York Times columnist and cultural critic extraordinaire Jamelle Bouie hops on the boat to the Big Easy to help us dig into its deceptive, Cagetastic appeal. Katie Chonacas has carved out quite a career for herself in show business. The author, actress, musician and social media influencer has crossed professional paths with Al Pacino, Robert Deniro, Charlie Day, Ice T and Gary Senise along the yellow brick road, checking off a number of names on my drinking buddy bucket list. You will find as you listen to the following session that Katie has an ethos that Walter Sobchak could appreciate. Katie and my better half seemed to bond over topics like Misophonia and mental health, while I kept guiding the discussion back to the amazing lineup of stars Katie has broken bread with over her years as an active member of the Screen Actors Guild. It has been a while since we recorded this discussion, and in that time Katie has released a new video for Saint Kyriaki (pronounced Key-de-ah-key), which we also discuss in this episode. I noticed a lot of great stuff while editing this one. The Triple Feature, a favorite of any true movie lover. In this episode we 're talking our ideal Triple Features all crafted around one man... NICOLAS CAGE! Movies: Raising Arizona, Face Off, Matchstick Men, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Con Air, Mandy
Can I get my prescription? PLEASE?! Nic Cage is putting on his lieutenant pants in this drug-fueled, igauana-heavy piece of art from famed director Big Zogs! Wickedy-woo, we talk about a moo...vie!
CAGE MATCH: F*CK FANGSThe Good, The Pod and The Ugly will trace the historic and maximalist acting career of Nicolas Cage through 20 of his films over the course of 10 episodes. How the 20 films were picked is simple: We argued about them. Two films will be paired from our master list based on theme and each episode we'll present our latest Cage Match. For week one it is from Thomas, LITERARY NICOLAS CAGE as we cover Vampire's Kiss (1989) and Adaptation (2002). Cage plays a writer or an editor in each. Well, he technically plays TWO writers in Adaptation. Anyway, writing plays a part in each. Also Chris Cooper's teeth!!In Kiss Cage plays the quintessential 1980s yuppie, a Manhattan literary editor, whose life starts unraveling as he kinda sorta transforms into a vampire. Flashdance is in this movie, either as a vampire or an ex. We aren't entirely sure. In Adaptation he plays Charlie and Donald Kauffman. Charlie is hired to adapt a book about orchids but ends up making the script - and movie - about Charlie Kauffman. Alternate title: CHARLIE TWITTER. Ken and Jack will be joined ALL SEASON by fan favorite Thomas, who is an expert in all things Cage. Please follow us on Instagram (thegoodthepodandtheugly) to see our complete lists of Cage films!VAMPIRE'S KISS: 00:06:58ADAPTATION :00:38:39Theme Song by: Howling FantodsOur 18 remaining Cage Films:8mm, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Bringing Out The Dead, City of Angels, Con Air, Face/Off, Leaving Las Vegas, Joe, Left Behind, Lord of War, Mandy, Moonstruck, National Treasure II, PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, Raising Arizona, Snake Eyes, Wicker Man, Wild at HeartEPILOGUE: WILLY'S WONDERLAND
This week The Cultists Present Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009). Technically (kind of, maybe) a remake/sequel/spin-off of Abel Ferrara's 1992 film Bad Lieutenant, Herzog's film remakes someone else's the only way Herzog can: by openly never having heard of Ferrara's film, nor caring. Instead, with a screenplay written by the man who brought the world the glorious television musical madness of “Cop Rock,” front-lined by the "Neo-Shamantic" master of polarizing accessibility, and helmed by a man who self-admittedly has no interest in the genre of crime films, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans, is a crime film like no other. So sit back and munch on some prescription opioids as we head down south for a film that to some is a confusion of celluloid, to others a dark comedic masterpiece of satire, but above all else, a love letter to iguanas. Episode Safeword: “mammals”
Okay, so listen. We went... a little long on this one, but hear me out, there is a LOT going on in this one. We promise we'll rein it in in the future.
Kat talks Nic Cage doing his best Cajun in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
