Long delayed but also long in the making, this week the Sneople are finally doing a David Lynch memorial episode! Helena and Matty go a little off the deep end this episode (as they do every episode they're left to their own devices), covering Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Dune (obviously) and so so much more. Warning, this episode is full of spoilers/discussion of a variety of Lynch films (though we avoid Twin Peaks spoilers for the most part) - if you wanna avoid that, come back at a later date. It's okay! We'll wait. Thanks David - we'll be appreciating your work for years and years to come. XOXO to eraserhead baby, we love you little angel
Bean and Dan are joined once more by one of the good friends of Chronscast, Tade Thompson, to discuss the great David Lynch's towering masterpiece, Mulholland Drive. Lynch is one of our favourite filmmakers, and his films continue to astound and bewilder like no other director's can. We wanted to do an episode to give our own small tribute to the great man, so you can imagine our delight when our old pal Tade told us of his own love for Lynch. We decided to talk about Mulholand Drive, as it is probably his greatest work, arguably his most successful and influential, and often cited as one of the greatest films of the 21st century. At once a poison-pen-cum-love-letter to Hollywood, the film reflects Lynch's own highly complicated relationship with the moviemaking machine in Los Angeles. It follows the story of Betty, whose own nightmarish descent through the Dante-like hellish circles of Hollywood, encompassing ambition, fame, envy, murder, corruption, glamour, sex, and betrayal is portrayed in an ever-expanding web of intrigue, (self)-deceit and guilt. The film mixes noir thriller with surreal horror, and finds time for some incredible set pieces, including one of the greatest sleights-of-hand in cinema during the scene at Club Silencio. We will be discussing spoilers as usual, but with a film like Mulholland Drive, spoilers arguably don't matter. What matters is that you go and watch it.Tade Thompson is the author of several modern science fiction hits, including the award-winning Rosewater trilogy, Far From The Light Of Heaven, and other works such as The Murders of Molly Southbourne, and Jackdaw, which itself is a nightmarish descent into madness worthy of Lynch himself.Join us in the next episode when Tade will continue to chat with us about the perils of AI technology in the writing and publishing industry, as well as his current screenwriting work.

In this week's tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of a truly legendary artist, director, and filmmaker. He turned suburbia, teen angst, and small town life into objects of horror, admiration, and pity. Genius, artist, and madman… It's David Lynch! While Lynch had little interest in schoolwork growing up, a love for painting brought him to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He would later shock the movie business with a student film in response to the madness of America in the days of Vietnam. With a career spanning over five decades, Lynch is known for his incredibly vivid, unforgettable, and dreamlike films including Eraserhead (1977), The Elephant Man (1980), Dune (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001), and more. He received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2006, an Academy Honorary Award, and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations for surrealist horror-mystery series Twin Peaks. In which Rob and Lilit discuss a movie that underwent a strange transformation from its original form to a similar-yet-distinct one, and the fun part is that you could assume that refers to the narrative OR the production history and you'd be correct either way.
David Lynch's unsettling tale of Tinseltown ambitions gone sour first gives us Betty and Rita, the plucky outsider aiding the star in crisis, then takes us through a magic portal to an alternate vision of the same bodies, now living different lives as Diane and Camilla (but are they different lives?). Dave parses the often non-linear timeline and discusses the film's origins as a shelved television project, while Jeremy proposes clues in hopes of reconciling the several not-quite-compatible narratives. “David Lynch is totally unironic,” it's been said, and there is real emotion in this object lesson in artifice, fate, jealousy, and betrayal. Join Dave and Jeremy as they gush over the intensity of some scenes and the comedy of others, all while treading lightly through the anticipation and terror that give MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001) its dazzling highs and devastating lows.Thank you for listening! EPISODE 193: Through a Dream, Darkly — Ranking David Lynch (ft. Molly Razz) Episode Description: This week, we tumble headfirst into the subconscious as Jason is joined by the enigmatic Molly Razz to rank five of David Lynch's most haunting cinematic visions. From industrial nightmares and small-town secrets to Hollywood hallucinations, we tackle the big questions: What is real? What is a performance? And where does that damn radiator song keep coming from? Films Ranked: Eraserhead (1977) The Elephant Man (1980) Blue Velvet (1986) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) Mulholland Drive (2001) Is Eraserhead a surreal masterpiece or an anxiety dream gone on too long? Is Fire Walk with Me the secret key to Twin Peaks? Does Mulholland Drive mark the apex of Lynch's dream logic? And how many mysteries can be packed into one velvet curtain? Molly brings razor-sharp insight, Jason brings existential dread, and together they attempt the impossible: ranking the unrankable. PLUS: The legacy of Lynchian dread The fine art of being uncomfortable Molly's theory on Blue Velvet and American repression A brief trip into the Black Lodge (we think)
In this final episode of our David Lynch arc, we delve into one of his most acclaimed and complex films, 'Mulholland Drive' from 2001. Richard Lewis, Thorin, and MonteCristo offer contrasting views, discussing the film's plot, themes, and surrealistic elements. They debate whether the film is a profound commentary on Hollywood and the nature of reality or an overly pretentious piece. Our hosts explain the plot of this famously non-linear film and provide their interpretations of its more enigmatic elements. They also explore the influence of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan on Lynch's work and analyze the infamous '10 clues' Lynch provided for understanding the film in the DVD release. Additionally, they touch on Lynch's career trajectory, his love for Americana, and how his work bridges various genres. Stay tuned for the announcement of our next arc focusing on Robert Eggers, where we'll explore his films 'The Witch,' 'The Lighthouse,' 'The Northman,' and 'Nosferatu.'

David Lynch made another foray into a serialized televison series when they attempted a pilot for a project with ABC. ABC decided not to pick up the pilot, and Lynch was able to get the money to turn the pilot into what we know as the cinematic masterpiece known as MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Send us a textWe continue our Forgotten Dreams theme with the shake-up that it must be directed by an "auteur;" someone who is known for their distinct style. Who better to choose than the recently departed, and very unique, David Lynch? And so we enter the dream world of 2001's "Mulholland Drive" starring Naomi Watts, Laura Harring and Justin Theroux. This movie is quite the puzzle - it even comes with its own clues - but it can be solved and we all agreed that after multiple viewings, we (mostly) figured it out!We also talk about David Lynch's philosophy on filmmaking/art and take a dive into our own weird dreams. So let go of any preconceived notions and just immerse yourself in the experience of this week's episode.
Episode 358: In Los Angeles, California, in the autumn of 1969, along winding Mulholland Drive, a young woman's body was discovered, brutally stabbed more than 150 times, her identity shrouded in mystery for nearly half a century. This Jane Doe, known only as case number 59, would lie nameless for the next 46 years, her story untold and her family unaware of her tragic fate. In a chilling twist, the proximity of her death to the infamous Tate-LaBianca murder scenes led investigators down a twisted path of speculation. The brutal nature of the crime sparked whispers of a possible connection to one of America's most notorious cults — the Manson Family. It wasn't until 2016 that modern forensic techniques finally gave her a name: Reet Silvia Jurvetson, a 19-year-old from Montreal who had ventured to L.A. with dreams as big as the Hollywood sign. Despite her identity now being known, Reet Jurvetson's murder remains unsolved. Her family is still hoping for answers more than 55 years later. Not one but two of Charlie Sheen's Mercedes were found crashed into a ravine off Mulholland Drive on separate occasions. By that point, he was working on running his career off the road for a second or third time, in a haze of alcohol, cocaine, $30,000 one-night stands, awkward dinner dates with porn stars and his ex-wife, livestream rants, LAPD house raids, and a triumphant ascent to a Beverly Hills rooftop with a machete and a bottle of red liquid labeled “Tiger Blood.” And that's only part of the story. Mulholland Drive is a 2001 surrealist neo-noir mystery art film written and directed by David Lynch. Its plot follows an aspiring actress who arrives in Los Angeles, where she befriends a woman who is suffering from amnesia after a car accident. The film follows several other vignettes and characters, including a Hollywood director who encounters mob interference while casting for his latest film. Lynch's tagline for the film is "a love story in the city of dreams". Just like Blue Velvet (and Twin Peaks), Angelo Badalamenti composed the film's score. RIP David Lynch, beloved director and otherworldly weirdo. The You Are Good feelings podcast about movies graciously invited me to talk about one of the most influential films and artists of my lifetime. Talking all things Lynchian with Sarah Marshall and Alex Steed, I tried to summarize this famously baffling plot of this film, mused about the concept of Duende, and cried on mic about the Unified Field. Whether you are a fan of David Lynch or not, I hope you enjoy this conversation that was very meaningful to me. David Lynch, an icon of American cinema, died last month at 78 years old. As a filmmaker, he was known for his eccentric and dark depictions of American life – as illustrated in his 1986 film "Blue Velvet." And in "Twin Peaks." His small-town mystery series aired for two seasons beginning in 1990 leading to a film and a 2017 reboot. Of course, his imagination wasn't limited to small towns and suburbia. His films included an adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune," and he showed off his love for Los Angeles in films like "Mulholland Drive." We look back at David Lynch's life and career. This week it's just Holden and Jackie, and they're both mourning the loss of David Lynch by viewing his filmic experiences, and both make plans to revisit shows they stopped in the past like post season 1 Twin Peaks, and HBO's Watchmen. Holden spent too much money at Amoeba Records, but got a pretty sweet Beyonce boxset vinyl! Jackie recalls watching Mulholland Drive with her mother in the theatre at roughly age 13. Jackie hates her love for Bad Girls Club, and despite spoiling it for Holden, Jackie won't let him spoil "The Brutalist". Jackie gives a breakdown of the Bam Margera episode of "The Curious Case Of...", and Holden lets Jackie know what he's thinkin' of the breakdown of "Dear Evan Hansen" by Jenny Nicholson. Jackie was not super impressed with "A Real Pain", but worth a watch now that it's on Hulu, and Holden gives an update on Kings of Tupelo!
