ChillRadio.UpliftingPills.com Instagram.com/UpliftingPills This passage from one of my favorite books, Love & Happiness by Yasmin Mogahed, speaks true to my spiritual transformation over the last 5 years or so, and is the inspiration for this mix. I have been through some dark times in my life and I have had to make some very hard decisions. But I'll tell you what I've learned... Life isn't supposed to be miserable. It isn't supposed to be excruciatingly painful. It isn't supposed to suffocate or drain you. Are there parts of life that will make you feel this way? Yes. Absolutely. But, why? We must ask why. Why do we go through these things? Is it so that we stay still and bear it stoically? Is it to passively endure and call patience? Absolutely not. In fact, we go through misery, pain, and suffocation for the exact opposite reason: To push us towards change. Movement. Growth. Patience is not standing still. Patience is not being passive. Sabr is the endurance necessary to make the change needed to move one step closer to where Allah wants us to be. God created pain, in both the physical and spiritual world, as a wakeup call. As a motivator and accelerator towards action, movement, and change to alleviate the pain. When a person has an infection, they feel fever. When a person's heart is clogged, they experience chest pain, or heart attack. A person can ignore fever or chest pain and call it “patience.” But if this pain is ignored and just numbed long enough, the sickness only increases. Until it actually kills us. Pain is a warning. A smoke alarm for the sleeping soul. If you feel suffocated, it's probably because you're not getting enough oxygen. It works the same spiritually and emotionally as it does physically. Be brave enough to dig deep, to be honest. And then to take the action and change necessary to save your life. But, be careful. Never, ever take this action alone. Seek strength and guidance in God. After featuring him in several mixes, I decided to do him justice by dedicating an entire mix to the gift he brings to this world. More than a composer, he is a storyteller. He uses music as a medium to create immersive and emotional experiences for his listeners, something I aspire to do in this show as well. In this interview, Zane describes his creative process when scoring films or creating sync licensing pieces. ChillRadio.UpliftingPills.com Instagram.com/UpliftingPills I recently re-watched the record-setting supersonic, freefall jump that Felix Baumgartner performed in October of 2012 from 39 km high up in space. The words he uttered before taking the leap of faith resonated with me: "I know the whole world is watching, and I wish the whole world could see what I see. Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you really are." I started thinking about the type of everyday moments that we just might look at differently if we could see them from "space". Then I came across this inspirational post by Sahil Bloom that succinctly put my thoughts in words: "Important Rule for Life: When in doubt, zoom out. Being perpetually zoomed-in creates two challenges: struggle feels bigger than it really is, and growth feels smaller than it really is. I hope this mix inspires us to appreciate the bigger context of our everyday moments and to "time travel" to the past or future to observe the present through that new lens. The whole quote goes like this: It's like I'm reading a book... and it's a book I deeply love. But I'm reading it slowly now. So the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. I can still feel you... and the words of our story... but it's in this endless space between the words that I'm finding myself now. It's a place that's not of the physical world. It's where everything else is that I didn't even know existed. I love you so much. But this is where I am now. And this who I am now. And I need you to let me go. "The greatest tribute to the dead is not grief, but gratitude," Thornton Wilder once wrote. Two months in, my grief for losing my best friend Chris is still ever-present. Nevertheless, realizing that painful separation was always going to be an inevitable price for attachment, I started attempting to derail the train of sorrow onto the path of gratitude. Chris's arrival and presence in my life sparked countless joyful moments. He got me through difficult times, not by doing anything extraordinary, but by just being there. He was an inspiration too. You're here listening to this show because Chris was there at the beginning with me in 2016, brainstorming how I might go about creating and branding it. On the eve of the 1st anniversary of when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, I mourn the loss of my best friend who lost his short-lived fight to it last month. I made this mix in an attempt to process my shock, my disbelief that years of talking to him every single day have been undone, and came to an indisputable irreversible end, in a matter of a week. He was my rock through thick and thin and I never imagined losing him this soon, at the young age of 36. But I also made this for all of you out there who lost a dearly beloved, be it to any cause, foreseen or sudden. Much has been written about grief, but contending with it and living in a post-traumatic shock is something no one can prepare you for. Words escape me and I find myself in whirlwind of emotions that come in unpredictable waves. Emotions like anger, denial, sorrow, disbelief and regret. I go about my day feeling numb, aimless and dejected. I'm told time is a healer, but what if I don't want to be healed? I'm scared of our memories fading into oblivion. Maybe this mix will be a solace for all of us who grieve. It has the highs and lows, the ebbs and flows, the wave of emotions that come to define our experience living with such insurmountable loss. And to Chris I whisper: Goodbye, my friend; your journey has ended. Your struggles have now begun to cease. Time to close your eyes to happy dreams And wake to eternal peace. I released this mix 9 years ago under my previous pseudonym DJ Seroton in a series called Unwind. It was inspired by the first track, In My Secret Life, by the late Leonard Cohen. Most mixes I create are typically inspired by a single song that I hear and feel strongly about creating a themed mix around. This one, however, has two sources of inspiration. First, I stumbled upon the dreamy, hazy and romantic style of a band called Cigarettes After Sex (the name beats me!). They became an instant favorite and their song Falling in Love was crying out to be the star of a mix. A little after that, Hans Zimmer and co. mesmerized me in the emotionally epic soundtrack to the Netflix original film Hillbilly Elegy. This mix begins and ends with music from the soundtrack, which gives it a particularly high note to end on that I hope would leave you with a lingering sense of love and hope. This is a throwback mix released 5 years ago under my previous pseudonym DJ Seroton in a series called Unwind. The mix was inspired by the the 5th track (More Than Nothing), and is centered around our desire to sometimes "turn back the hands of the clock" and do something we missed out on doing. Even though the song describes a man's regret for not pursuing a relationship, I'd like to think of this idea more generically to include everything we procrastinate or never get to do that we later wish we would have done, or at least tried! Musically, this mix was by far the most time-consuming 1-hour mix I've ever created! It almost burnt me out trying to perfect all aspects of the mix, especially the first of the two mashups, track 13, which is made up of two equally amazing songs by DeYarmond Edison and All India Radio. With this mix, I want to invite you to fall in love with a style of chillout music called Chillhop. It's a style that brings together lofi hip hop beats with a rather jazzy and relaxed feel. One day, I was sampling music on Bandcamp when I stumbled across City Girl's incredible album: Siren of the Formless. I had heard (and previously featured) this style of music, but never have I heard such an exquisite full-length album showcasing wonderful combination of smooth jazz elements, dusty vintage samples, and laid back hip-hop beats.
