FLASHBACK! (duh duh duh duh / making wibbly vertical lines with both hands / mysterious face) Hope you joined in there...  This ep was first released on May 2 2024 and we're re-releasing it - like a brilliant classic album - for a very special reason. Limited Time Only has been nominated for an actual AWARD! An International Women's Podcast Award in the category of COMEDY GOLD and it was clips from this episode that won us that nomination. We couldn't be more thrilled (Susie meeting Chesney Hawkes was the bar here and she was absolutely ruddy THRILLED about that so imagine how we're feeling about THIS!). Check out the other brilliant nominees here: IWPA Winners will be announced at the ceremony at BBC Broadcasting House on 17th June so we'll let you know how we do. We'll definitely be drunk. So to celebrate this achievement, and to give this episode another moment in the sun - she deserves it, she's bloody good and features a bone fide rock star - here is Ep 1 of Season 4, Everybody's Changing (featuring Jesse Quin) ORIGINAL SHOWNOTES Everybody's Changing and Susie & Esther don't feel the same... At the end of the last season, they thought, we Can't Stop Now! If only they don't Bend & Break, with Perfect Symmetry, they could create Somewhere Only We Know for a very special first episode of the new season. Featuring Jesse Quin from the band, KEANE! Jesse is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer and the founder of Old Jet Arts Centre in Suffolk. He chats to the gals about his early life and his supportive parents; how his career started; his experiences on the road with Keane; and answers lots of questions from listeners - thank you so much for sending them in!   Also this ep, there is a surprise visit from the ghost of Derek Acorah; a good old chat about change; comedy sketches; and some singing! It's a bumper ep to launch Season 4 and we're thrilled to be back in your ears. Please share this episode someone you like who'd enjoy it too!   Competition: If you've read these shownotes share the episode on social media (handles below!) and tag us in, and send your postal address to limitedtimepodcast@gmail.com - we'll send you a prize! The Art of Longevity

Of all the bands to grace our company on The Art of Longevity, Keane have ridden the music industry rollercoaster through all the stations of the cross: struggle, success, excess, disintegration and if you're lucky - enlightenment. Tim Rice-Oxley doesn't hesitate for a moment:“Yeah, absolutely. Our struggle was quite long and our disintegration was quite quick, although we clung on effectively for quite a while. I feel like now we are in a more positive and exciting place than the day before Hopes & Fears came out”. It's easy to forget in these days when the monoculture is a dot in the rear view mirror, that Keane really went huge: five consecutive number one UK albums (album six ‘Cause & Effect' was number two). Their early success carried an unstoppable momentum. Yet behind the sheen of that success, as quickly as their second album ‘Under The Iron Sea', the band was imploding - a combination of exhaustion and the pressure of heightened expectations causing an emotional disconnection between bandmates - a difficult thing to handle for old school friends.Every band of longevity should make a book and/or a film. It's what fans in today's crowded music landscape deserve really - the scarcity of access to the inner circle, whether that's present or past. And for Keane themselves it sounds like the book has served a therapeutic purpose in a way. “We're insanely hard on ourselves, to the point where it's not good. We'd find any feedback and take it as a stick to beat ourselves up with. But we're finally at a point now where we can say that we are quite good at what we do, proud of our music and our place in the world”.As Keane heads back into the studio next year, the band is far better equipped than when they headed to Sanger's French farmhouse 20 years ago to make their debut - both emotionally and technically. The only problem is that they have set the bar high when it comes to track record. The creative ambition and self-critical muscles of this band are no doubt twitching away. “I know I'm going to have to write a lot of songs to get to the magic. One of the things bands struggle with is quality control - knowing the difference between what's good and what's great. There are millions of people out there trying to write songs as well so you have to raise your voice about everything else out there”. On page 35 of the book Hopes & Fears: Lyrics and History are two lists on the page of a ring bound notepad, titled The OK Computer Test. “There's no way we thought we were making the next OK Computer but you've got to try. You ask yourself “how do our heroes do it”. But if we knew then what we know now, we might have put ‘Somewhere Only We Know' at number five instead of first”. For the next Keane record I suggest they apply “The Hopes and Fears Test”, just to make sure their new material is up to scratch. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Sorti en single en 2004, "Somewhere Only We Know" connaît un succès immédiat.

Propelled by their classic smash ‘Somewhere Only We Know', ‘Hopes and Fears' is undoubtedly one of the best debut albums ever made. Since then the band have released a further four full length albums - with the most recent record ‘Cause and Effect' arriving in 2019.   The band have sold 12 million albums worldwide, with Hopes and Fears entering the list of 40 best-selling albums in the UK of all time. They've toured in over 40 countries. Keane, originating from Battle, East Sussex, are one of Britain's best loved bands comprised of Tim Rice-Oxley (composer and pianist), Tom Chaplin (lead vocals), Richard Hughes (drummer), and since joining the band fully in 2011, Jesse Quin (Bass). Songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley and singer Tom Chaplin were school friends in East Sussex before forming Keane. Their enduring appeal revolves around the honesty of their songs and the emotion in the music. They are as relevant today as they were twenty years ago.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grief is known by many names- sadness, joy, anger, love, fear...just to mention a few. It is experienced & felt in ways that are unique to each of us and our relationship to the people, places or things that we are grieving. While many voices in this world want to help by claiming that they are grief "experts", and while others are pathologizing grief or making up "stages of grief" to follow- at its core they cannot because grief is somewhere only we know- once we know it. Confused? Intrigued? Triggered? Curious? All is welcome when you check in and check out this episode of The Shek Check. February 14 2015, while the world relished director Sam Taylor-Johnson's erotic drama "Fifty Shades of Grey" on Valentine's Day, Chinese lovers had to settle for a tourism marketing video in the guise of a love story."Somewhere Only We Know", or "'You Yi Ge Di Fang Zhi You Wo Men Zhi Dao", is a romantic story with minimum nudity. It is about the encounters of a young Chinese woman who has been dumped at the altar. In order to calm her nerves after the traumatic experience and also to revisit one episode of her late grandmother's past, Jin Tian travels to the Eastern European city of Prague, where she meets rich kid and single dad Ze Yang. The story basically follows the recipe of every other romantic film. The two characters eventually grow fond of each other despite some initial misunderstandings, but more challenges will emerge before they are to live happily ever after.Apart from the predictable storyline, there are also some unexpected and unpleasant surprises.Take the first half hour for example where the director juggles mismatching tasks. On the one hand, she wants to make the best of the exotic scenery in Prague, so here we have the typical sunny, dreamy-coloured shots, similar to the demonstration videos played by TV salesmen in their stores. On the other hand, the director also tries desperately to convince the audience about the trauma our dear heroine has sustained from a failed relationship. To achieve this, the film plays ghostly music every time our fair actress gives in to distraught recollection. The ghostly music may work for horror films, but definitely doesn't go with the beautiful pictures. However, what bothers me the most are not the constant close-ups on the early Baroque style architecture and the young couple's smooth faces amid a haunting soundtrack, if I covered my ears, the pictures were still pleasant to look at. However I could not stand the clumsy way the film trumpets a so-called "international flavour". When Jin Tian discovers a love letter addressed to her grandmother, she was not able to read it because it is written in the Czech language. She turns to Ze Yang for translation, and he reads it out in Chinese. Then half way during the reading, touching music kicks in and the old Czech writer himself reads the latter half in ENGLISH! In fact, every major Prague character in the film speaks English rather than their native West Slavic language. If the purpose is to sound "International", perhaps the director could let the Czech characters speak their native tongue, most Chinese viewers are reading the subtitles for the English dialogue anyway. Or the conversations could all be dubbed into Chinese, I don't suppose any Chinese viewer would object to that. But if I were allowed to indulge my imagination and meanness a bit, I think the reason is perhaps our dear director herself speaks a bit of English and would like to show off her linguistic prowess in the role of the charming grandmother. It is a mean speculation, but one that rather befits Xu Jinglei's public profile as a female talent. 10 years ago, Ms Xu was the blog queen of China. With decent calligraphy skills and a face not too bad to look at, she was able to attract followers in their tens of millions to visit her blog space, where she offered nothing particularly interesting but the simple life of a celebrity. The fact that she was among the first to set up a blog plus her knowledge about and access to an exclusive part of the world simply fueled public curiosity. This kind of monopoly of knowledge and information is being challenged by the advent of the Internet and proliferation of mobile devices. With a few taps on their smartphones, the Chinese people can now instantly learn about the lives of people around the world, and with increased wealth, more of them can afford to travel overseas to see the world for themselves. Prague, or any other city for that matter, is no longer somewhere only the director knows, but somewhere everyone can know.As China continues to open up, amateur directors will find it increasingly difficult to shortchange their viewers with patchy "international flavours". Soon they'll have to choose between obscurity and making really good films.
