In this conversation, Sarah Vizenek opens up about what it really feels like to walk away from something that looks “perfect” to everyone else—and why more people struggle with this than they're willing to admit. We talk about the pressure to stay in roles that impress others, the internal conflict that comes with outgrowing success, and what it actually takes to choose fulfillment over expectations. Coming up on the Together 4 Good podcast, we're revisiting a conversation that feels especially timely this week. Over the last couple of months, I've had the chance to interview several of the speakers who will be part of the ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly. The theme this year is “Vida en Cristo / Life in Christ,” and it's been shaping a lot of what I've been thinking about. So while this episode is a repeat, it fits right into that theme. What am I supposed to do with my life? It's a question most of us carry at some point. But instead of offering one perfect answer, this conversation shifts the question—grounding us in identity first. In Christ, you are already loved, already enough, and already called. From that place, purpose becomes less about chasing something new and more about noticing what's already in your hands and how God is at work in your everyday life. What You'll Learn:How “life in Christ” reshapes the question of purposeWhy identity (not achievement) is the starting pointWhat it means to be named, claimed, and sent in baptismHow to recognize your gifts in ordinary, everyday lifeWhy you don't need one perfect calling to live with purposeChapters: 00:00 A Timely Conversation: Life in Christ 01:20 Why We Keep Asking “What Should I Do With My Life?” 04:00 You Are Already Loved: Identity Before Purpose 06:30 Baptism as Calling: Named, Claimed, and Sent 08:45 “What's in Your Hands?” (Moses and Everyday Gifts) 11:30 Giving Your Gifts Away for the Sake of Others 14:30 You Don't Have One Calling—You Have Many 17:30 The Myth of the Perfect Life or Career 19:30 Life in Christ Happens in Ordinary Moments 21:45 Letting Go of Pressure and Trusting Today 24:00 Noticing Where Christ Is Already at WorkIf this conversation resonates, like, subscribe, and share it with someone who's been asking these same questions.Connect with Bethany:

What If It's a Bunch of Shit? Margaret Rutherford on the Relentless Camouflage of a Perfect Life

“There is tremendous loneliness in the kind of life where you just don't feel like anybody knows you.” — Margaret RutherfordYesterday, the Brooklyn psychotherapist Daniel Smith defined perfection as the devil. Today, the Arkansas-based Dr. Margaret Rutherford explains what happens in our FOMO age when the devil wins. Her subject is what she calls the “perfectly hidden depression” of today's Instagrammable types. Perfectionism rates are going up, Rutherford warns. And so, not uncoincidentally, are suicide rates.Rutherford's own mother in Fifties suburban Arkansas was a case study. Beautiful, smart, talented and anorexic. The perfectly mannered and coiffeured hostess. Married the “right” husband but in love with the wrong man. An Arkansas Madame Bovary. “The fucked-up fifties woman” as one of her friends called it. She became a prescription drug junkie because of her addiction to perfection. Nobody knew her, not even herself. The relentless camouflage of her life became a prison. Rutherford has spent the last decade trying to help people escape that prison — first with her book Perfectly Hidden Depression, now with a companion workbook. On AI and therapy, Rutherford is equally blunt as Daniel Smith. She noticed that AI always praised her ideas. But what if AI, like Instagram, is what she calls “a bunch of shit”? A real therapist tells you what you may not want to hear. The AI shrink starts with flattery. Rather than therapy, that's just more camouflage for a perfectly imperfect life.Five Takeaways•       Perfectionism Rates Are Going Up. So Are Suicide Rates: The academic researchers have been screaming this for years. People whose lives look like they're going great are dying by suicide. They slip through every diagnostic crack because they answer every question the way a non-depressed person would. They leave the therapist's office with a wave and a smile.•       The Relentless Camouflage of Performing Your Life: Destructive perfectionism isn't wanting to do things well. It's fuelled by fear and shame — the need to cover up everything that's caused you pain. The camouflage becomes a prison. Your sense of worth depends on it. You can allow no one to see you struggling — not even yourself.•       Her Mother Was a Fucked-Up Fifties Woman: Beautiful, smart, talented — and knew none of those things. Anorexic. The perfect hostess. Married the right man but was in love with someone else. Became a prescription drug addict because of the need to look perfect. Nobody knew her. She didn't allow anybody in.•       The Harvard Study: It's Not Money. It's Connection: The seventy-five-year longitudinal study found that happiness comes from feeling in relationship with other people — not wealth, not success, not followers. We've transplanted connection with metrics. The perfectionism epidemic and the loneliness epidemic are the same epidemic.•       AI Therapy: What If It's a Bunch of Shit? Rutherford noticed that AI always praised her ideas. Oh, these are wonderful. Then she thought: what if they're not? Real therapy means being told what you may not want to hear. AI starts with flattery. A good therapist starts with the truth. You cannot replace the human sense of gentle — or not so gentle — confrontation. About the GuestDr. Margaret Rutherford is a clinical psychologist, TEDx speaker (2 million+ views), and host of the Self Work podcast (500+ episodes, 5 million+ downloads). She is the author of Perfectly Hidden Depression and its companion workbook. She practices in Fayetteville, Arkansas.References:•       Dr. Margaret Rutherford — her practice, podcast, and books.•       Episode 2854: Perfection Is the Devil — Daniel Smith on boredom, envy, and why our darkest emotions aren't so dark. The companion conversation.•       Episode 2850: Bring the Friction Back — Stephen Balkam on social media addiction. Rutherford's camouflage meets Balkam's friction.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. A special episode: In this talk, Amoda Maa dismantles the persistent myth that awakening or enlightenment delivers a perfect, pain-free, or effortless life. Awakening does not eliminate life's polarity—its ups and downs, birth and death, pleasure and pain. What fundamentally changes is the end of resistance. When there is no longer a separate self opposing experience, a deep peace and acceptance arise that are not dependent on circumstances. From this absence of resistance, life may or may not change externally. Safety and comfort are discovered as inherent in being itself, not produced by conditions. This is a different understanding of perfection—not a flawless life, but a wholehearted intimacy with life as it is, beyond duality, beyond expectation. Taken from a series of discourses given at the "Five Spiritual Myths" online gathering held in January 2025.

In this episode, Greg and Nathan discuss the significance of Christ's perfect life, emphasizing that His sinless obedience wasn't just a model for living but a crucial part of God's redemptive plan. They explore how Jesus' flawless fulfillment of the Law was necessary not only for the removal of sin through His sacrificial death but also for the imputation of His righteousness to believers. Without His perfect life, humanity would remain guilty under the weight of the Law; but because His righteousness is credited to us, we are not just forgiven—we are declared righteous before God. The hosts reflect on the beauty of this divine exchange, highlighting how it secures both our redemption and our standing as beloved children of God.

Living an Imperfectly Perfect Life - Episode 5006 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Scott Smith explores the concept of living an imperfectly perfect life, discussing how life's natural peaks and valleys affect our journey. He shares insights about human adaptation, the challenge of maintaining New Year's resolutions, and the importance of mastering life's basic fundamentals before pursuing complex goals. Key Takeaways Life naturally flows between peaks and valleys due to hedonic adaptation, and understanding this pattern helps manage expectations and responses. Mastering the basics (sleep, nutrition, hydration, health) creates a strong foundation for pursuing larger goals. The fundamentals of human experience haven't changed throughout history - success comes from embracing simple, proven principles. Discipline and self-awareness are crucial for maintaining progress and achieving goals beyond basic needs. Featured Story Scott discusses National Quitters Day (January 10th), when most people abandon their New Year's resolutions. He connects this to his Perfect Week Planner tool, emphasizing how awareness and discipline can help maintain momentum despite the natural tendency to quit. The story illustrates how simple, consistent actions often yield better results than pursuing perfection. Scott's Three-Step Approach Master the basics of life first (sleep, nutrition, hydration, health) Find and follow existing maps for achieving specific goals Maintain discipline to execute plans consistently Memorable Quotes "If you master the basics, if you get right down to it, if you got your health, life is perfect." "You are the only person responsible for your life experience." "The stuff of life is the stuff of life is going to keep coming at us. And the basics of life are the basics." This week on Dopey! We are joined by addiction/recovery heavyweight, VP of Public Affairs at Hazlelden/Betty Ford, author of BROKEN and BROKEN OPEN - William Cope Moyers! William takes us down the long path of growing up in the limelight and succumbing to addiction - only to claw his way out becoming one of the countries most heralded speakers and writers of recovery. When dental problems struck! William had extensive surgery and got excessive oxys prescribed! Here what happens next on a very special new episode of that good old Dopey Show! PLUS! The Origin of Boofing Meth in OKC, Doing Coke in Kabul and much much more on this weeks newest DOPEY!  What AI says: Dopey Nation. Dave dives headfirst into an episode so jam-packed with raw honesty, wild tales, and dark humor that your headphones might file for workers' comp. Joining him is the legendary William Cope Moyers—author, public advocate, recovery powerhouse, and Suboxone truth-teller—to unravel the rollercoaster of addiction, redemption, and, yes, a little “dark energy” courtesy of painkillers.
