The Daniel's Nemesis Podcast is back, and with a difference. Salvaging a terrible novel has never been so difficult.  It all started with aliens invading after the First World War. But that was never enough. The novel became more surreal, less conventional. Imagine it's 1918. The Great War has just finished, but now the aliens are invading. Ginger Jeeves, ace fighter pilot, traumatised by the war, cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy. Skaj Frite is the Supreme Leader of the Trascons, wondering if invasion is truly the way to claim a new home for his refugee race.  XBook, the surreal novel in which these two characters deal with such very extraordinary events in vastly different ways.  Presented to you is the whole book in an audio format. It's lower quality than I hoped for due to the length.  I will have the timestamps for each chapter in the description so that you can move around.  The audio quality, narration speed and volume will vary due to being recorded in chunks over literal years.  This isn't a great book. To understand why I think so, please check out Series 1 of this podcast where I break down the book over 25 episodes. Be very patient with the first 8 or so episodes. Things start to get interesting and better after that.  Again, this is not a great book. But, for budding story-tellers, you can't always study what's great. You also need to study the failures. You really do. Studying my own failure has helped me a lot.  Be warned that there is some disturbing imagery and lots of naughty words. This is for adults.  Anyway,  Remember:  This is Fiction, always fiction. Surreal Sci-fi mess XBook is almost at an end. **Some distressing moments** Here are the antepenultimate and penultimate chapters. This is where we find out how the characters should be getting ready for the final conflict, but what we actually learn is how this novel falls apart.  Any story is about wants vs needs and motivations, but what happens when the main character doesn't have any of those?  Don't know what's been happening? Well, this is not the best place to start. Nor is the beginning. XBook - Designed to be the greatest book of all time. Written 20 years ago, its themes are still necessary today.  How many other stories look at the same alien invasion from the human AND the invading aliens' perspectives?  Ginger, an aberrant character, fresh from the Great War of 1918 is now on the alien mothership, and still having surreal visions.  We talk today about surrealism and the aberrant character's place in the avant garde.  There is not as much talk of disguises as some parts may suggest. THIS CHAPTER IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. XBook. A novel that was written when I was trying to work out the world, and my place in it. The form of expression was that of an alien invasion in 1918. The world has just come out of its Great War, and Ginger, a human fighter pilot, is the one man to attempt to stop this invasion. He is on the alien Mothership right now, hiding from an entire civilisation in their air ducts with one round of ammunition in his pistol. Today's subject is William, Supreme Commander and leader of the aliens. Due to increasing pressures, he launched a massive invasion after the first, small invasion failed. He now has a pesky human scurrying around somewhere on his ship.  Surrealism, existentialism, stream of consciousness, finding meaning then deconstructing that meaning and leaving it in shattered pieces only to be later tucked under the carpet when my parents come to visit. This is the world of XBook. An anything-goes novel, in which… anything goes. XBook - Alien invasion done through the invading alien's perspective…. Because. Saving the Earth from alien invasion done through one human's surreal perspective…. Because, because? WARNING: Some graphic and violent content in this episode.  XBook is the surreal story of a fighter pilot stopping an alien invasion in December 1918, just as the war has finished.  Looked at from another point of view, XBook is the story of the leader of an entire alien race wondering how best to get his citizens onto Earth.  It's kind of two books rolled into one as the same events get scrutinised from different angles.  One is very inward looking, the other is just bat-shit surreal.  After reading the chapter, and I'm very happy to be reintroducing this element, I analyse the chapter trying to work out what was going on in my mind a couple of decades ago when this got written.  So, what's happened so far?  Attempting a small invasion (having first given notice), the Trascons lost out in a  counterattack from the humans.  Commandeering one of those alien fighter craft, our human protagonist, Ginger, is now on his way into space to take on the aliens single-handedly.  As the Trascon Leader, William, launches a massive invasion, Ginger is unable to do anything as his stolen ship is caught in a tractor-beam and is being pulled towards the alien fleet.  Just remember:  This is fiction, always fiction. Naturally.  I mean, when you're in your late teens and socially isolated, then in your early twenties and being exposed to weird films at university and you're bored in the holidays (social isolation again), this is what happens. XBook, is what happens when you put an alien invasion right after the First World War and then use one of your main characters as a springboard for surreal fantasies.  If that sounds like a book that was written by someone young and dumb, you'd be right. I last looked at it about 15 years ago, and just occasionally I admire my writing. Just occasionally.  Each episode, I read out a chapter and then analyse it. Well, this is going to be the last analysis. It's complicated, but very much chronicled through many previous episodes.
