What happens when a late-twentieth-century detective novelist develops strong opinions about the First World War?   This month Angus, Jessica and Chris discuss Reginald Hill's The Wood Beyond (1995) and the short story 'Silent Night' from the collection A Candle for Christmas (2023). Along the way, we consider the significance of the genealogy boom to the historiography of the war, the politics of the Shot at Dawn campaign and the tradition of novelists inventing fictional regiments.   References: Midsummer Murders The Sweeney Who Do You Think You Are? ADAM HENLEY talks about his TV history and THE WEST WING First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on February 2nd 2025. This week we welcome a new voice to VISION ON SOUND, that of ADAM HENLEY, an archive television fan who I first met when he offered to help out with some of my technical support when I was recording our live show on stage at WHOOVERVILLE in Derby last September. He expressed an interest in taking part, and suggested we might talk about THE WEST WING for the show. However, because he hadn't been on the show before, I also wanted to talk a little bit about his own life as a fan of television, so, whilst we do get to THE WEST WING in the end, it's on a journey that takes via LOGOPOLIS, the PYE TUBE CUBE. THE YOUNG ONES, EASTENDERS, BLACKADDER GOES FORTH, THE TIME MACHINE, and the films of POWELL AND PRESSBURGER to finally reach the Oval Office, which is certainly a very different route to the one taken by the current incumbent, and I hope that you'll stick with us for the full term of this edition of the show, which is, luckily enough, only going to take up an hour of your time. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

What happens when the First World War meets pulp science fiction?   This month we read the novel: Black Hand Gang (the first in the No Man's World trilogy) by Pat Kelleher. The book depicts a fictional battalion of British soldiers who are transported from the Somme to a strange alien world. This week we review - (Series 4 Episode 6) Blackadder Goes Forth is set in 1917 on the Western Front in the trenches of World War I. Captain Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) is a professional soldier in the British Army who, until the outbreak of the Great War, has enjoyed a relatively danger-free existence fighting natives who were usually "two feet tall and armed with dried grass".Finding himself trapped in the trenches with another "big push" planned, his concern is to avoid being sent over the top to certain death. His comrades in arms are his second-in-command, idealistic upper-class Edwardian twit Lieutenant George St Barleigh (Hugh Laurie) and their profoundly stupid but dogged batman Private S. Baldrick (Tony Robinson).Rather than the Germans, who remain generally unseen, Blackadder's nemeses come in the form of his superior, the eccentric General Melchett (Stephen Fry) who rallies his troops from a French château 35 miles from the front, and Melchett's bureaucratic assistant, Captain Kevin Darling (Tim McInnerny).Written by Richard Curtis, Ben Elton and Rowan Atkinson.Produced by Mandie Fletcher, Martin Shardlow and Richard Boden.A BBC tv Production.Blackadder is available here: https://bbc.in/38L9c5m The Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube. William acts a bit like Captain Kirk on board the Starship Enterprise (again), and he also covers some exposition (again). A lot like the last episode (chapter 5), but a new day, and William is still going on.  Yes, it's episode 6 of this old novel by myself, Daniel's Nemesis, called XBook. It's about an alien invasion in 1918, just after the Great War has finished and we follow both sides of the action, from the human perspective as well as the alien perspective. Unfortunately, both perspectives are a bit skewed. Think Independence Day meets Blackadder Goes Forth with a touch of Salvador Dali mixed in. I did, and I wrote about it. After I read the chapter, I shall then dissect it and start to bring out some psychobabble as well. Think of this as "how not to write a book". Bad fiction by a bad author who feels the need to exonerate himself by putting his many times rejected novel on to the Internet as an audiobook for all to laugh at. This isn't a mash-up of science fiction and historical fiction as both of those genres would require a modicum of research... The only fantasy in this story is that anyone would recognise it as a story. Enjoy!

We begin 2018 with a discussion of Neil's favourite film of 2017, and a worrying early revelation about Dan's general problems with musicals. But we persevere, and discover not only a few musical gems in Dan's closet, but also a shared appreciation for some of the plot elements in La La Land. Things get a bit philosophical and introspective as we dig into how we motivate ourselves (and others) when we (or they) suffer setbacks, how we tell our own stories about the world around us, taking the opportunities that come your way, avoiding being paralysed by "what if", and a few of the many screw-ups we've made in our past relationships. A new series in which each week I read a chapter from a novel I wrote as a teenager 15 years ago, and afterwards talk about it to see how little I have changed since then. This is a story of an alien invasion taking place on Earth directly after the First World War, a mix of Blackadder Goes Forth, Independence Day, and Un Chien Andalou. Yes, those natural bedfellows. And as you can imagine, this was not a novel that was published. Here, I present the awfulness of this novel for your amusement, and you can think of it as a How To NOT write a book.  Today, we just look at the synopsis, with a bit more detail surrounding the creation Assterwork, and will jump into the first chapter in the next episode.  Please like and comment. I would very much like your support in improving this podcast, but maybe don't recommend this to your friends just yet....

Kelly & Tom welcome the Dowager Cousin Jackie back to UYDS for their coverage of Blackadder Goes Forth. The trio is surprised by its tonal similarity to Parade’s End and spends a long time extolling the virtues of Orphan Black for no other reason than the fact that everyone should watch Orphan Black. Otherwise, they realize that Captain Flashheart is essentially Duffman from The Simpsons (RIP Rik Mayall), discuss the many sins of Chris Columbus, solicit accounts of raising pigeons from chicks, uncover Tony Robinson’s Da Vinci Code connection, revel in the madness of General Melchett, fist-pump for Miranda Richardson, admit there’s something about Bob, and wonder why there are only three people in the British army. All this, plus Kelly thinks Blackadder is a Capricorn, Tom makes a lot of Shakespearean interruptions, and Jackie refuses to acknowledge fruitcake as cake. Waffle On about Blackadder Goes ForthHello and welcome to this months edition of Waffle On in which Captain Simon Meddings, Private Mark C Kelly and General Peter Coleman sneak out of the trenches and poke their heads out into no mans land (the Internet) and have a good old tally yarn about this classic British Comedy. Also as usual we throw in a little cheeky clip at the end of the show. To listen direct just press the little play button on the podbean site , or download via iTunes or Stitcher Radio. RHLSTP #20 - John Lloyd - It's Not Personal. Richard continues with his mission to get to be a guest on QI with top TV producer John Lloyd, though Lloyd seems intent on demonstrating why Herring is too thick to get on the programme with increasingly difficult questions about how many chemicals there are in a carrot, how to define art and if God wears sandals. Or something. It gets brain-hurtingly deep and philosophical as both men attempt to discover the meaning of life. Plus there's some great behind the scenes stories from Not The Nine O'Clock News and Blackadder Goes Forth, Doctor Snuggles and the world of advertising. Does everything happen for a reason? Why does Richard Dawkins waste his time retweeting praise? Where else could you hear a quite clever man being bamboozled by a very clever man, before asking him if he'd prefer a ham hand or a suncream armpit?
