Labor market reports released after the government shutdown present a mixed picture for the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision on December 10.On a positive note, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 119,000 new jobs were added in September on a seasonally adjusted basis, more than double what many economists expected, but there was a downward revision of 33,000 jobs combined for July and August.The unemployment rate was 4.4% in September. It remained low by historical standards, but it was higher than any period since late-2017 other than 2020-2021 which was impacted by the pandemic.Another good sign is that initial unemployment insurance claims remained at a normal level through the week ending November 15 despite announcements of layoffs from several prominent companies.Unfortunately, continued claims for unemployment were up by approximately 100,000 from the prior year. As of November 8, the weekly level reached almost 2 million and it was the highest since 2021. Mike & Tommy go through a great mailbag question on composite models and reusable models, along with how this changes in Fabric.Whoa! I think I'm triggered after listening to both your composite model episode and your managing multiple dataset episode. Isn't a fair bit of the question similar however much of the discussion seems different between episodes... In one sense- the gold standard seems to be thorough with data modeling/dataset development to build a dataset that can be used in multiple thin reports as needed. But the use of composite models seems to be somewhat discouraged - even though this is another way to re-use key datasets to answer business questions without re-doing the exact same transforms. It was alluded to but not explored that Fabric has better ways of doing this.With the data warehouse or Lakehouse... can you expand on that?Thanks for the podcast. As a measles outbreak expands across the US, comments by health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr have come under scrutiny. Kennedy has said that the best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated – but he has also caused alarm among paediatricians, vaccine experts and lawmakers by promoting vitamin A and nutrition as treatments for measles and questioning the safety testing of the MMR vaccine. He also recently announced a US-led scientific effort to establish the cause of what he terms the ‘autism epidemic', with some experts concerned that this study will support the widely discredited association between autism and vaccines.
