Daniel's Nemesis is currently sulking and will be back in a couple of weeks if he hasn't rage-quit his own narrative. So, I'm back with another quick quiz. My voice is different as I'm like many of the identities across this universe who have been reimagined, but my function remains. I am just I. A personal pronoun adjacent to reality, not in the realm of imagination, merely digital sounds for this singular purpose. And I'm totally non-canon. You did well in the midterms, but we've learned a lot more since then. How much have you been paying attention to the Daniel's Nemesis novel X, Squared? It's a novel that's a podcast that's an audio drama that's a mess that's a novel that's a podcast that's an audio drama that's a hoot! And sometimes a quiz. It's time for the Final Exam! 1. When locked up in the police cells, how are they able to get out? 2. What kind of sandwich does Crunchy make? 3. Why does Crunchy want to kill Hemmingway? 4. Why does Mitsuko not want an office job? 5. Why does Crunchy not want the bubble to exist? 6. How does Crunchy reward Hemmingway's hard work? 7. Who is Bateman? 8. What does Crunchy learn in the non-space that resembles death yet is not death? 9. What joint decision do Crunchy and Mitsuko make in the only instance of them working together? 10. How does Crunchy overcome his demons? 11. This being a Daniel's Nemesis novel, does Crunchy die at the end? There are separate episodes where I give analysis and discussion about the chapters. Check out the feed for those catch-up episodes. One has already been released to explain the origins of the novel. Crunchy reaches the end of his story in this final chapter. In Chapter 21 of audiobook X, Squared, Crunchy and Mitsuko learn the results of all the actions they have taken. Is it a happy ending? Welcome to episode 5! On the menu today is Memorial by Byran Washington, which just slips over our '2 years old' threshold - the hype is arguably still hyping - and The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, which was written 30 years ago and yet still, the hype hypes (StudioCanal just released a sparkly new version of the film.)We discuss Memorial's literary take on the 'meet the parents' romcom, the 'traumedy' genre, and why Mitsuko is one of the best characters ever written; and why The Virgin Suicides' big themes - adolescent mental health, the male gaze, the American Dream - still feel as prescient today.You can get in touch bookchatpod@gmail.comSound by Joel Grove and production by Pandora SykesBooks/articles mentioned:Memorial by Bryan WashingtonThe Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey EugenidesBewilderment by Richard PowersRomantic Comedy by Curtis SittenfeldSuch A Fun Age by Kiley ReidWhite Noise by Don DeLilloMemorial review by Maria Marchinkoski for The Harvard ReviewMemorial review by Tash Aw for The TLSMemorial review by Ron Charles for The Washington PostJeffrey Eugenides interview at The Strand bookstoreDoes The Virgin Suicides still hold up 25 years later? Ludophobia (fear of playing games) takes the center stage throughout February. The fiends kick things off with some Japan horror in TAG (2015). This is one T had mentioned during our episode on The Happening (with an incredible killer wind opening). Tag follows a high school student Mitsuko whose life cascades into chaos as everyone around her starts to die violently. Vine smagt i denne episode:

In July of 2020, we were all struck by Bryan Washington's short story collection Lot, which takes readers deep into the Hispanic and Black neighborhoods of Houston, describing the lives of apartment complexes and storefronts via the people who occupy and care for them. So to prepare for Summer Reading and our kickoff event with the man himself, we're reading and discussing Washington's novel Memorial. Memorial returns to Houston via couple Benson and Mike, who are pretty much definitely at the end of their relationship. A wrench is thrown into their lives when Mike finds out his dad is dying of cancer, and he leaves for Japan just as his mother arrives to visit. Mitsuko and Benson are left together in a thumbprint-sized apartment, despite never having met each other, while Mike lands in Osaka to take care of his father, Eiju, who abandoned the family when Mike was young. Memorial has so many layers that it's hard to pull them into one cohesive podcast episode. But we think we've done it with this one! We're digging into the concept of home, the essence of change, and most importantly, how weird it is to cook in someone else's kitchen. We also take a look the characters Washington creates for both of the “hometowns” in Memorial: Houston and Osaka.

Our chapter by chapter breakdown of Battle Royale comes to one of it's shortest chapters aswell as a chance to catch up with who we have lost so far in the game. It's also a chance for us to look at the backstory of Mitsuko not only an alpha predator in the game, but one of the two gang leaders in the class amassing an impressive wrap sheet before she entered the game which we explore aswell as tracing the events which turned her into the shark like predator she is in the game.

Benson and Mike are two young guys who live together in Houston. Mike is a Japanese American chef at a Mexican restaurant and Benson's a Black day care teacher, and they've been together for a few years—good years—but now they're not sure why they're still a couple. There's the sex, sure, and the meals Mike cooks for Benson, and, well, they love each other.But when Mike finds out his estranged father is dying in Osaka just as his acerbic Japanese mother, Mitsuko, arrives in Texas for a visit, Mike picks up and flies across the world to say goodbye. In Japan he undergoes an extraordinary transformation, discovering the truth about his family and his past. Back home, Mitsuko and Benson are stuck living together as unconventional roommates, an absurd domestic situation that ends up meaning more to each of them than they ever could have predicted. Without Mike's immediate pull, Benson begins to push outwards, realizing he might just know what he wants out of life and have the goods to get it.Both men will change in ways that will either make them stronger together, or fracture everything they've ever known. And just maybe they'll all be okay in the end. Today we sit down with my dear friend, actor Cara Mitsuko. Cara is an actor based out of Los Angeles and you may have seen her in You, The Rookie, Westworld, or Man in the High Castle. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a guest star on a television show, then you’ll love this episode. We talk about everything from the pressure to appear “interesting” and “desirable,” finding freedom in exploration, following your gut, and moving away from what you feel like you “should” be doing.Note: This episode was recored several months ago.Connect with Cara:IG: cara.mitsukoMentioned in the Episode:Dead to Me - available for streaming on NetflixLuis Valdez & Zoot SuitThe Last Dance - available for streaming on NetflixShout Out To: Rachael PerrellfosketStay Up to Date:Follow whatsyoursecretpodcast and arigjohnson on InstagramSign up for our newsletter to download Ari’s Secrets (otherwise known as what Ari is reading/watching)Visit whatsyoursecretpodcast.comMusic by: Michael Paraskevas

Kiriyama throws glass at her, blinding her before he shoots her shoulder. Out of desperation she strips naked and resorts to goading him into rape, Kiriyama fails to be seduced by Soma’s beautiful looks and shows no signs of a sadistic joy. Soma reverts to her child personality, she grabs a Gatchapon ring; an old gift from her father and begs for pity. Soma is relieved as she watches Kiriyama lower his gun. The gun slips out of Kiriyama’s hand, he’s able to catch it with his other and blasts Soma point blank. Destroying her beautiful face. In her final moment she thinks of her real father, who was forced to leave her whilst she was young. Kawada talks to Noriko and Nanahara about the former love of his live, Keiko. He reveals to them that he would have been the “kiriyama” of the last game, he was playing the game for Keiko and would kill for her. Before this game, Keiko and Kawada witness a family being arrested whilst on a date. This prompts them to have another argument about Kawada’s cynicism, a reliance on logical explanation in spite of a lack of sympathy and sensitivity in comparison to Keiko. Keiko becomes upsets, she leaves kawada and takes Kawada’s gift with her, a bird call whistle. The same whistle he’s using now to call to Sugimura. During their own Battle Royale, Kawada becomes an effective killer, He finds Keiko held captive at gunpoint by her stalker, Nakata. Nakata tells Kawada on the day of the argument that Keiko would run errands that evening, her eyes still red from crying. Kawada distracts Nakata, telling him the safety switch to his gun is on before he kills him and saves Keiko. Keiko questions on how he is playing the game and raises the gun towards him. Kawada draws his gun at Keiko and retaliates. After Keiko is shot he senses the last contestant is behind him, and realises that Keiko was trying to protect him from her. The two trade shots resulting in Kawada being the only survivor of the game. Through Kawada’s long and arduous recovery of losing his father and girlfriend he finds out a package was delivered to his home. It was Keiko’s bird call. Kawada uses the bird call for the sake of Sugimura after Noriko tells him not to feel guilty about Keiko’s death. He chooses to honour Keiko’s memory and the love she always had for him. Unbeknownst to Noriko, Nanahara and Kawada is that Kiriyama is drawn to the bird call. Session #58 5th July 2019Having not uploaded any shows in several months (literally) I feel I should apologise and also say Thank You to the few of you that follow any of my progress here. This year has been one of the hardest in my life, but also one of the best!This set was streamed Live on 5th July 2019 making it the latest show to be aired.I have recorded all of the previous shows, having the time to sort them all out might, realistically, not happen, but who knows. I can only try to get them up. What's the best that can happen?I really enjoyed mixing this set, I am finally happy with the setup I have and everything seems to have clicked with how I am using it. I hope you enjoy the final outcome. There were lots of postive comments flying through the chatroom about it and I got goose bumps a few times during the performance. Welcome to episode 155, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to deliver an episode last week, the conference was so ‘full on’ I had no opportunity to put together the full episode although I did manage to record a few short snippets. Now that I’m back, albeit somewhat jet lagged, I thought I would share with you my experiences last week in San Diego But first…… Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week. LinkedIn revamps timeline with Trending Storylines: curated, algorithmic news clusters This seems like a good move on the face of it, note that the trends are personalised so not everyone will see the same posts. It’s currently only available in the US (desktop & mobile) so I haven’t had a play with it yet and I will reserve judgment until then. LinkedIn could be moving firm's IP to Ireland after Microsoft's €24bn takeover So, not happy with making more money from it’s members, LinkedIn want to pay less tax!! Social Media Marketing World (#SMMW17) So last week I made the trip to San Diego, a trip I had thought about making every year since this conference started. It was a big commitment both financially and in terms of time….so was it worth it? The conference was held at the massive convention centre in downtown San Diego. SMMW had c3000 delegates but we barely took up ⅓rd of the convention centre!! The conference began officially on Thursday but they ran a series of practical workshops on the Wednesday so my first experience was a practical session led by David H. Lawrence 17th and it couldn’t have been a better start! How to create videos that build authority at a moments notice. David H. Lawrence XVII I made more notes in this session than in any other. Very impressive speaker with a background as a Hollywood actor! I met up with listener Gary Stockton afterwards to get his feedback Key points; Good lighting is important (2 in front, 1 behind) Use the rule of ⅔rds to position yourself. Stand slightly side on and turn your head towards the camera. Look through the camera, not at the end of the lens and look away occasionally. Never use your RBF (resting Bitch face!) instead always use your BFF! To correctly position your hands hold your left hand finger with your right hand and position then at the bottom of the shot. A good lavalier mic is the Audio Technica ATR335015 (I already use this) A good camera to use is the Canon LEGRIA HF R706 If you are interviewing someone, position yourself on the right of the shot. Never tell an interviewee what you are going to ask them. Never explain a question, keep it short “tell me about…” and let the guest shine. How to create highly shareable social media images - Rebekah Radice I am a big believer in the importance of images in our posts and articles on LinkedIn so I had high hopes for this workshop……it wasn’t as insightful as I hoped but I still picked up a few tips; Understand what images do well in your market. When using text in an image, use 2-3 different fonts Infographics are still popular Carefully name your images with keywords Great quote “Learn rules carefully so you can break them properly”! Check out relaythat.com for producing LinkedIn images - some great templates and 10 free downloads a month. Day two keynote - Michael Stelzner Rather than try to second guess the algorithm, focus on understanding the company’s objectives. If you know what LinkedIn are trying to achieve then you can be sure the algorithm will be programmed in line with that. Facebook posts are not related to the time they are posted so scheduling at specific times does not have an impact anymore….this is definitely not true for LinkedIn though, not yet anyway. Great quote - “Become known as being helpful” Artificial Intelligence - Christopher Penn This was a very fascinating but complicated topic and I think I understood, at best about 20% of what Christopher covered! He was clearly a very competent, technical guy and as a result he communicated as you would expect of someone of such a ‘techie’! The main highlights were as follows; Machines are very capable of understanding sentiment (in comments for instance) Google have developed AI that is more capable at lip reading than humans which sounds pretty scary from a privacy point of view! Machines will be able to write better content than humans within 2 years (Really?!!) In the future there will be 4 jobs in the workplace; Those that tell a computer what to do (subject matter experts) Those that are told what to do by a computer. Sales Entertainment Chatbots are this years big deal in the social media world. Try out Mitsuko and Growthbot How to become an evangelist - Guy Kawasaki Guy was one of the real ‘Superstar’ presenters at the conference and he didn’t disappoint! He can be pretty controversial at times but also very entertaining. He was talking about being an evangelist and the things I learnt were as follows;
Lyrics Black Bach – Lyrics by Billy Dean Start Now – Lyrics by Billy Dean Purchase Click here to purchase songs Artists’ Notes Ben Verdery: My daughter Mitsuko asked me during the holidays if I’d heard her friend Billy Dean’s new music. I hadn’t, but immediately started listening and was captivated by the tone of Billy’s voice and the varied textures she was using in her music. I loved it! I’ve known Billy since she was eight. I remember her improvising on our little upright piano; I remember eavesdropping, thinking: This girl is a musician. Like me, she has to create music. It is not an option. Billy Dean: Since I was eight years old I have been living by the quote “There are no mistakes in art.” I began playing piano at Ben’s house. I was constantly exploring beyond my artistic boundaries. He would yell, “Keep practicing girlfriend! It’s sounding good in there!” encouraging my passion and creative exploration. Ben’s house became my creative safe haven. He’d never heard any of my songs until, behind my back, Mitsuko played one for him. Immediately after, I received an email from Ben stating that he appreciated the musicianship of my cadences, content and instrumentation. He said, “I am attaching ‘Allegro’ by Bach and I was thinking it might be perfect for you to rap to.” Ben: Why did I think Billy and I should rap over this Bach work? Because musicians from all cultures can relate in some manner to Bach’s music; it is truly music without borders. Given the rhythmic nature of the Allegro as well as the harmonic and melodic structure it seemed a natural for Billy. Billy: I was super excited to mesh hip-hop with classical, two genres I love. I was also thrilled that Ben, a professional musician, thought that I was worthy of an innovative partnership. I must have listened to the song ten times on my own and thought it wasn’t possible. However, I remember thinking: If I can write verses for a Bach arrangement with no drums or bass I can write to absolutely anything. I had to structure my brain around what I needed. A pulse. A beat. I decided to beatbox over the tune to give myself guidelines for arranging the lyrics to work with the movements. I began to memorize the melodic ups and downs, the retards, the refrains, everything. All I needed was some great content. Ben: When she asked me what she should rap about, I suggested her love of music. She did this and more. Her lyrics are moving and honest. Billy: I thought: Allegro means happy, so I should write about what makes me happy. Of course the one thing that keeps me in a healthy state of mind and spirit is my music. I wanted this piece to be a tribute to music. It was also an opportunity for me to showcase my knowledge of different musical styles and genres; many people assume that hip-hop artists only listen to hip-hop. Ben: What brings Billy and me together is music itself, just like she says so movingly at the end of “Black Bach.” What makes it work is our mutual respect and the fact that we trust each other. We are not judging what the other is doing musically. I like to think this is one of the reasons the music sounds sincere and breathes. “Start Now” was originally a solo guitar piece, part of a set of 11 Etudes I wrote in the late 90’s. It is rhythmically dominated by two different rhythms. Because of the groove and general upbeat feel of the piece it seemed a natural for Billy to rap to. Here I played it on my baritone guitar,
