Hugh Turley - The Murder Of Ernest HemmingwayMarch 25Hugh Turley returns with another deep dive into the people involved and surrounding murky circumstances surrounding the death of writing giant Ernest Hemmingway.Ernest Hemingway was one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century. With his novels such as The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea still studied in classrooms across America today, Hemingway's legacy continues to inspire generations of readers. But the controversy surrounding his death lives on as well.On July 2, 1961, Ernest Hemingway died at his home in Ketchum, Idaho. The New York Times reported that he accidentally shot himself, and Blaine County Sheriff Frank Hewitt initially said that no foul play was suspected. But just two days prior, Hemingway had been released from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he'd been treated for depression and other mental health struggles. People soon began wondering whether the famed author's death was truly an accident.Note : Ernest Hemingway may well have had secret contact with Soviet intelligence agentsWebsite : Hugh Turley MagicianBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
It will come as no surprise to regular listeners of this podcast that we are all big fans of Steve Perry, the chief vocalist of Journey. So it should also not come as a surprise that we would want to feature his debut solo studio album called Street Talk. Perry embarked on this solo project shortly after the release of Journey's "Frontiers" album, at a time when the group was packing arenas around the world. The name of the album comes from his pre-Journey days when he was leading a band called Alien Project - but he had at one time considered naming it, "Street Talk." Perry also used Craig Krampf as drummer, who was also a previous member of Alien Project. The album obviously has similarities to Journey due to Perry's vocals, but it is significantly softer than the more pop rock/hard rock approach typical of Journey. The songs are written or co-written by Perry, and showcase Perry's voice in a more ballad-heavy manner. The lead single, “Oh Sherrie,” was written about his relationship with Perry's then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, and hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. We covered “Oh Sherrie” on episode #148, but there are three other singles that broke into the top 40, powering the album to number 12 on the Billboard 200 album charts and to 2x Platinum in sales.Perry had worked outside of Journey during his tenure with the band, including vocal work with both Sammy Hagar and Kenny Loggins. Other members of the band were also working on side projects, so it was expected that all would return to the group after their separate projects. Perry followed suit, this, but troubles began to surface with personnel changes and Perry's mother's failing health causing the "Raised on Radio" Journey album to be delayed.Street Talk gives us a good look at Steve Perry outside of the rest of the Journey band members, during a time when Perry was at the top of his vocal game.Rob brings us this excellent album for today's podcast. She's MineThe track that starts side two is a slow rocker that demonstrates Perry's versatility in musical styles. The lyrics describe a struggle between a guy and his rival over a girl. It made it to number 21 on the US charts - and you can't go wrong with a sax. Captured By the MomentThis song is deeper lyrically, with Perry looking at significant times in history and music as snapshots in a frame. He pays tribute to some key figures from the 60s and 70s including Martin Luther King Jr, Jackie Kennedy, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and others. It has a distinctive 80's keyboard sound. Foolish HeartA subdued piece, this track is the second-biggest hit from the album after "Oh, Sherrie." The lyrics depict a guy longing for love, but who does not trust his heart to make good choices. It was co-written with Randy Goodrum, who wrote "You Needed Me" for Anne Murray. It was the last single released from the album. Strung OutThis faster paced track closes out the album, and discusses love from the perspective of a guy longing for a woman in a relationship with another. "I feel like Bogart in a crazy movie. Bogie and me, we never beg - but this time maybe I've got voices in my head." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Who's the Boss?”Tony Danza plays a former baseball athlete trying to raise his daughter while working as a live-in housekeeper for a single advertising executive. Alyssa Milano played Danza's daughter. STAFF PICKS:I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister Wayne kicks off the staff picks with glam rock sensation Twisted Sister in their follow-up to "We're Not Gonna Take It." Many listeners may be more familiar with a cover of this song performed by SpongeBob SquarePants in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" entitled "Goofy Goober Rock."For Whom the Bell Tolls by MetallicaLynch brings us a signature song from Metallica's 1984 album, "Ride the Lightning." The heavy riffs typical of Metallica are accented by the toll of chimes, and the lyrics are inspired by Ernest Hemmingway's novel of the same name dealing with war, death, and fate set in the Spanish Civil War.Hard Habit to Break by Chicago Bruce takes the tempo way down with a hit off Chicago 17. Vocal duties are carried by Bill Champlin and Peter Cetera, and the song is arranged by David Foster. The lyrics depict a man struggling to get over a long lost love whom he took for granted. Chicago 17 is Chicago's best selling album, and their last with Peter Cetera in the group. No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney Rob closes out the staff picks with a single from the soundtrack to McCartney's film, "Give My Regards to Broad Street." McCartney brings in Pink Floyd alumnus David Gilmour for guitar work on this song. Gilmour requested that his session fee be donated to a charity of Paul's choice. It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Zoolookologie by Jean Michel JarreWe close out on a jazz fusion number from the time which uses samples of voice and spoken words to form an art rock sonic landscape. Ahead of the highly-anticipated third installment in Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool series, set photos are being shared with abandon as drone shots show off more of the movie than the Star wants. The 2024 Golden Globe nominations are in and the leaders will surprise nobody, with Barbie and Succession topping the boards with nine nominations each. Other buzzworthy films and shows with many chances to sweep awards are Oppenheimer, The Bear, Killers of the Flower Moon, Only Murders in the Building, Poor Things, and The Crown. Some noted projects that did not garner any noms are Napoleon, Ferrari, Origin, and Swarm. Next year's awards show will premiere two new categories: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. This year's Golden Globes will be the first held without the oversight of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has opened the voting opportunity to a more ethnically and racially diverse voting group made up of 300 journalists from 76 different countries. The Wall Street Journal reported Angelina Jolie has officially signed on to reprise her role as Maleficent for a third film in the series. Amazon released the first teaser trailer for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the reboot series of the 2005 film of the same name, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The new series stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and will drop in its entirety on Prime on February 2. Tom Blyth, the breakout star of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, signed on to star in a film adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's World War I novel A Farewell To Arms. The project will begin filming next year. Warner Bros. Discovery signed a multiyear U.S. output deal with studio A24, bringing the entertainment company's slate of films exclusively to Max for streaming after their theatrical runs. Peacock renewed the action-comedy series Twisted Metal starring Anthony Mackie for a second season. According to Deadline, Sean Gunn will play the evil businessman Maxwell Lord in the new DC Universe that is helmed by his brother James Gunn. It is not yet clear if Sean Gunn will make an appearance in the upcoming Superman Legacy or if he will appear in different future DC projects. Netflix renewed the animated drama series Blue Eye Samurai for a second season. After a series of concerning reports about Marvel Studios' Blade film, Mahershala Ali addressed the state of the project. “We're working on it. That's the best I could tell you,” Ali said, speaking to Entertainment Weekly. “I'm really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we'll be back at it relatively soon.” Godzilla Minus One, now at $14.36 million at the box office, is currently the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America. This follows an opening weekend that marked the biggest Stateside debut of a foreign film this year.
On Today's Show "That's still my trick too, never tell them how they're feeling. Never begin to even show how they're feeling. They'll get it anyway. You're describing negative space and the negative space you can't even get at.” - Jon Klassen Where there is empty space, our brains will fill in the blanks, and often, the way in which we personally fill those blank spaces is far more potent than anything that can be written in words or shown in an image. That's why despite being gifted in both illustrating and writing, Jon Klassen always intentionally restrains himself from specificity. Jon is a Caldecott Medal winner author and illustrator known for his distinctive minimalistic art style and quirky but profound writing. His work includes his Hat Trilogy, starting with "I Want My Hat Back", along with newer works such as "The Rock from the Sky," “The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale” and many collaborations with his longtime friend and author Mac Barnett. In this episode, Jon tells us the story of how he learned to embrace the unspoken through a “gunshot moment” in his youth. He'll talk about how he intentionally incorporates negative space into his work and why that is so impactful for young readers in particular, and we'll hear about the SNL classics that inspired his coy sense of comedy. ***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In his reading challenge, "A Tale to Remember," Jon invites readers to follow a process that for him emerged unintentionally in the creation of his latest book, "The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale." My guest today is a writer, producer and director of plays, films and videogames. In 1997 he left Belgium to study theatre at NYU in New York. While a student my guest began freelancing as a video game journalist contributing to Next Gen, Official Dreamcast Magazine and the legendary Famitsu in Japan. He then joined Treyarch to work on the video game adaptation of Steven Spielberg's MINORITY REPORT, a project that set him on the path of cross-media storytelling. His 2014 graphic novel RICKY ROUSE HAS A GUN was named one of The Boston Globe's books of the year. Then two years later his debut feature film, THE WHITE KING, adapted from a Hungarian novel, debuted at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Later, he produced the theatrical adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises, a West End success described by a reviewer for The Sunday Telegraph as ‘intense, raw and compelling.” Most recently, my guest directed C-Smash VRS, a virtual reality-based follow-up to the cult classic Arcade and Dreamcast game, Cosmic Smash. Ernest Hemmingway is rumored to have invented many drinks around the world, lets get to the bottom of the truth in today's podcast. Join Amanda Sasser of Contiki bar and Jason Wise as they drink around the world seeking the truth about this mythic writer and drinker.
“I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God” (Jer. 31). Jeremiah 31:27-34 Psalm 119:97-104 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5 Luke 18:1-8 “When the Son of humanity comes will he find faith on earth” (Lk. 18)? These words from two thousand years ago are the defining question of our time. This week the House Committee on the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol concluded its hearings. We have seen indisputable evidence that politicians continue to use false claims of electoral fraud to secure their own power.[1] Last month the governors of Florida and Texas falsely promised jobs and resettlement help to asylum seekers who they sent to Washington, D.C. and Martha's Vineyard. They used immigrants, including children, as part of a political stunt.[2] This action echoes the way that black southerners were bused out of the south by segregationist White Citizens' Councils to cities with prominent integrationist leaders in 1962.[3] This week in Ukraine and Iran ordinary people were slaughtered because of a distant political agenda, because of an ideology. Here at home we see terrible poverty and neglect on our own streets. “When the Son of humanity comes, will he find faith on earth?” In the face of the heartbreaking cruelty and dishonesty of his own time Jesus tells his friends, “a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart” (Lk. 18). Jesus tells this story near the end of his own journey to Jerusalem, as he talks about the end of time when God's realm of justice, peace and love will come. The Hebrew Bible frequently demands that the powerful have a special responsibility to widows, strangers and orphans. These groups are vulnerable because they have no male relatives to defend them. Although widows in the Bible (like in the stories of Ruth or Elijah and the widow of Zarephath) often model tenacity, resourcefulness and initiative, they represent vulnerability just as the judge symbolizes power. In several sections of Luke's Gospel he uses a “how much more” argument. “If you then, who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him” (Lk. 11:13).[4] This parable uses this same logic. A widow comes to a judge seeking justice. He does not believe in God. Nor does he respect people. He refuses to help her until he reasons that, “because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out” (Lk. 18). Let me point out two ways in which the Greek version differs from the English translation. When the judge says that he does not want the widow to “wear him out” the Greek word for this is hupopiazē. It is an expression from boxing. It means to literally give someone a black eye. The judge doesn't want the widow to embarrass him or injure his reputation. Second, the Greek more strongly conveys urgency, impatience and conviction. Greek uses double negatives to add emphasis. It's almost as if Jesus raises his voice to underline what he means. A more literal version might be, “And will not God give vengeance to his chosen ones who are crying day and night? And be impatient to help them!”[5] The point is not that God resembles the unjust judge. In almost every respect Jesus describes God as the opposite. The judge is self-centered. He only uses people. But God is full of love, impatient for his children to thrive. Jesus is unafraid to be humiliated for our sake. The purpose of this “how much more” story is for us to trust God and to persist in prayer.[6] Today I want to give you one picture of a faithless world and then to consider how faith humanizes us. In college I knew a woman whose favorite story was Ernest Hemmingway's "The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber." This always worried me about her partly because of the story's misogyny but mostly because of its position with regard to faith. We meet Francis Macomber as a thirty-five year old American business tycoon on safari in East Africa. As the story unfolds we gradually come to realize that he has committed the cardinal sin in the universe of Hemingway fiction. The day before he betrayed his manliness and ran in fear from a wounded lion who had been concealed in the tall grass. Margot, his wife, does not try to comfort him in his humiliation. Instead, she despises this act of cowardice and as a consequence she sleeps with the safari leader that night. Hemmingway also seems to hate his own fictitious character, because he wouldn't leave his wife, because "he would take anything" from her.[7] The next day the group goes in pursuit of a dangerous buffalo. Then, suddenly, in an almost religious conversion, Macomber changes. Hemmingway writes, that “[f]or the first time in his life he felt wholly without fear. Instead of fear he had a feeling of definite elation.” The safari leader admires this new courage. His wife fears it because she no longer has the power to make him ashamed of being afraid. Why is it called a "Short Happy Life"? Only moments later as Macomber tries to flush the buffalo out of the long grass, “he [feels] a sudden white-hot, blinding flash explode inside his head and that was all he ever felt.” Although his wife claimed she was aiming at the buffalo, she shot him in the back of the head. When the son of man comes will he find faith on earth? In Hemmingway's universe there is no faith. Men can never depend on women, or on other men. Every person is either a conquest or an adversary. The individual can only rely on an elusive courage that comes miraculously from within, an irrational bravery which completely isolates each soul from all else. The theologian H. Richard Niebuhr emphasizes that faith means more than merely faith in God. Faith concerns all the ways that we are connected to and support and depend on each other. “We see this possibility – that human history will come to its end… in the gangrenous corruption of a social life in which every promise, contract, treaty and “word of honor” is given and received in deception and distrust. If [human beings] can no longer have faith in each other, can they exist as [human beings]?”[8] What shall we do in this time before the second coming of Christ? We need to pray and not lose hope. We also need to strive to be people of honesty and integrity, to listen and care for others. To use the language of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) we need to treat people as ends rather than as means to our own goals. The heartbreaking sin of this judge was his inability to see the widow as a person. I have a friend named Sue Everson who is a world authority on hopelessness. As a medical researcher she studies the effect that hopelessness has on our health. One of her more startling statistics is that people who feel hopeless are twenty percent more likely to die in the next four years from a stroke. Hopelessness increases your chance of a stroke to the same degree that smoking a pack of cigarettes a day does. Sue scientifically studies how religion seems to make people less hopeless.[9] Today with churches around the world we celebrate the Children's Sabbath. A central part of what we do together involves our care for children and families. We teach children how to listen spiritually, how to pray and not lose heart. Professor Lisa Miller has been our guest on the forum twice. She argues that denying our spirituality is not just untrue but unhealthy for us and especially for children. Using new techniques ranging from twin studies to neuroimaging, scientists are coming to a new appreciation for just how important spirituality is for human flourishing. Miller claims that all children possess a kind of “natural spirituality.” This interest in the Holy, this, “direct sense of… the heartbeat of the living universe… precedes and transcends language, culture and religion.”[10] This spirituality protects us, but not completely, from depression, anxiety and the tendency to misuse alcohol and drugs. So what is the most important thing that we can do as adults for children? We can support their Sunday School teachers and the families who gather here. We can take their questions seriously. We can listen to them.[11] And so the conversation continues every week here. In life we are forever asking and being asked a simple question, “do you believe me?”[12] Do you? Seeing what is happening in the world, it is easy to struggle with a crisis of trust right now. I trust God but I don't know if the Son will find faith on earth. And yet at the same time I feel remarkably supported by the life I find at Grace Cathedral. C.S. Lewis writes that, “Faith… is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of changing moods….” Because of this he says we need to pray and hold some of the Christian ideals in our mind for a period of time every day. We need to worship because, “We have to be continually reminded of what we believe… Belief has to be fed…” People do not cease to be Christian because of a good argument but because they simply drift away. Kathleen Norris writes, “prayer is not asking for what you think you want but asking to be changed in ways you can't imagine. To be made more grateful, more able to see the good in what you have been given instead of always grieving for what might have been.”[13] My friends pray always and do not lose heart. Be trustworthy and care for the children. When the Son of humanity comes may he find faith on earth. [1] Alan Feuer, Luke Broadwater, Maggie Haberman, Katie Benner and Michael S. When you think about high energy, what comes to mind first? For some it's a Red Bull energy drink with between 80 and 111 mg. of caffeine. For others it's supplements like creatine which creates bursts of speed and energy before weight-lifting. And for others it could be sugar or chocolate, my favorite. In interviewing Sheri Traxler, certified intuitive eating counselor, we learn about creating authentic high energy not based on shortcuts of energy that create a roller coaster of highs and lows throughout a day. Her message is not one of diets but of creating a high energy lifestyle with thoughtful preparation, healthy habits and quick wins with or without lattés. The Two Hungers - Matthew KellyGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribeVideo Transcript:“In A Moveable Feast, Ernest Hemmingway writes about the many types of hunger we experience. He wrote this about a nagging hunger that he couldn't seem to satisfy, “My wife and I had a wonderful meal at Michaud's, but when we had finished and there was no question of hunger any more the feeling that had been like hunger when we were standing on the bridge was still there. It was there when we came home and after we had gone to bed and made love in the dark, it was there. When I woke with the windows open and the moonlight on the rooftops of Paris, it was there. I put my face away from the moonlight into the shadow but I could not sleep and lay awake thinking about it. My wife slept sweetly now with the moonlight on her face. I had to try to think it out and I was too stupid. Life had seemed so simple that morning when I had wakened to the spring…” We have all I suspect had similar experiences with hunger. To be human is to be hungry. Knowing what we truly hunger for is wisdom. The Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa talk about the “two hungers.” There is the Great Hunger and there is the Little Hunger. The Little Hunger yearns for food while the Great Hunger, the greatest hunger of all, is the hunger for meaning. Laurens van der Post, the South African author and godfather to Prince William wrote, “There is ultimately only one thing that makes human beings deeply and profoundly bitter, and that is to have thrust upon them a life without meaning. There is nothing wrong in searching for happiness. But of far more comfort to the soul is something greater than happiness or unhappiness, and that is meaning. Because meaning transfigures all. Once what you are doing has meaning for you, it is irrelevant whether you're happy or unhappy. You are content.” What are you hungry for today?”If you have not read LIFE IS MESSY, order your copy today: https://amzn.to/2TTgZKn Subscribe to Matthew's YouTube Channel today! https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewKellyAuthor/featured?sub_confirmation=1https://www.matthewkelly.comGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribe The Best Version of Yourself and 60 Second Wisdom are registered trademarks.#MatthewKelly #BestVersionOfYourself #BestVersion

Nick notes that Germany’s natural gas reserves are at “alarm level” and energy policies of its own making have manufactured its energy scarcity.Continuing on energy and climate policy, Nick discusses how the two are the root cause of global turmoil, an emboldened Russia and China, a weakened West, and fueling inflation to record highs. He goes on to discuss the winners (government, bureaucrats, the expert class, large companies with market power) and the losers (small and mid-size businesses, consumers, and taxpayers) of mounting regulations, proposed SEC rules on climate risk, and ESG investing complexity—a theme explored throughout his book Precipice.Additional topics this week include Pope Francis, self-responsibility, and New York City real estate. Nick closes with a few of his favorite Ernest Hemmingway quotes in conjunction with the author’s July 21st birthday.

Welcome to July 19th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate friendly competition and cooling off. Today is National Words With Friends Day and I have a few choice words for you guys! Marlo: Don't say french fries. John: Marlo hates fries! Anna: That is so yesterday's news! I had my seasoned fries on a Friday and I am just glad Marlo came to his senses. Anyway this game looks really fun, it's like a scrabble game you can play with your friends in an app form. On National Words With Friends Day enjoy a friendly spar with your favorite nerds. Some drinks are synonymous with tropical vacations, but the daiquiri is named after a small mining town in Santiago de Cuba. During the Spanish American War, workers at a mine in Daiquiri would gather to cool off at the end of a long day's work. At a place called the Venus bar their American supervisor, Jennings Cox came up with the drink made from rum, lime juice, and sugar. But when Ernest Hemmingway first encountered the daiquiri, he ordered another without the sugar and double the rum. This drink became known as the Papa Doble. While he usually drank whiskey, Hemingway bragged that he could drink 17 daiquiris without getting a hangover. On National Daiquiri Day, celebrate responsibly with the drink that still tastes good at the end of a long, hot day. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Ernest Hemmingway said, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” A longtime lover of books and especially those about hound hunting, Steve takes his listeners on a literary journey in this episode, an unusual “guest-free” trip in which he shares two old and dear book-friends from his personal library. A chapter from Steve's book, Gone to the Dogs – A Coon Hunter's Journey provides the basis for the first conversation centered upon a historic coon hunt in southwestern Michigan in the year 1924. Fielder builds his story upon the original story, published in Hunter-Trader-Trapper magazine from coon hunter Guy Beeman in which he and a friend capture a giant ringtail that stretched the tape to 50 inches, tip to tip. Steve embellishes Beeman's tale with an in depth look at the times including the vehicles driven, the equipment used and the startling realization that the hunt takes place as the nation finds itself in the throes of an influenza pandemic the likes of which we have now experienced some one-hundred years hence. A second story from the aged classic turns comedic as Steve shares contributor Orma Winter's tale of a city slicker on his first coon hunt with hounds. Also, in this episode Steve reflects upon three years of podcasting in which 157 episodes have been produced. Give this one a listen and we'll celebrate together from our vantage point aboard a coon hunting time machine. Enjoy.

Ernest Hemmingway said that "the world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places." This was a deep and at times painful episode. Me and Tiffanee were in good spirits, relatively. We recorded this episode on her birthday. I had no idea. Yeah, some friend I am. But days before something happened. It was likely the saddest day of Tiffanee's entire life. The love of her life, her dog coach, died. What's worse is that it was sudden and unexpected. She went in for a relatively minor surgery and never woke up. I understand how devastatingly painful that experience is. It wasn't too long ago that we lost our dog Orlando. If you're a dog lover and you've experienced this personally, you completely get it. If you're not, this may not make sense to you. But most of us have had the experience of losing someone we love. It's an excruciating feeling. Suffering and loss are an unavoidable part of being human. Maybe it's the fact life IS so fleeting that makes our moments so significant?I have attended more funerals than I'd have liked to, obviously. One thing that I've observed is that in confronting the reality of death, you get clear on what's meaningful in life. Even in the midst of grief and suffering you can find beauty, love and meaning. We only feel a sense of lose in relation to what we value. If we can be vulnerable to understanding what we miss most, perhaps that can help us to discover what we love most. Because arguably, when facing the reality of life, that's all that matters.
Our society has a very negative view of failure and its role in our lives. For Rohana Olson, failure has to happen in order to find success. In fact, without failure it's almost impossible to find your true self. Listen in as we chat about some of the failures she's experienced in life and business and how she has grown through each. Rohana loves creating timeless images that depict the simple, every day beauty of love and marriage. It all started with the epic love of her grandparents. They were married for 71 years and were a shining example of love and marriage, but they had very few pictures of their lives together. She is passionate about capturing those little moments for her clients so that their love will shine through the years. But her vision doesn't always land with her clients. Listen as she shares one specific moment and what she did to make sure her clients were happy with the end result. She says it herself, she's no stranger to failure in life and business. However, if she'd never failed, she would have never learned and she wouldn't be where she is today. She's sharing all of her nuggets of wisdom and you won't want to miss them. 1. Grammarly; 2. Hemmingway; 3. Cliche Finder; 4. Headline Analyzer; and 5. Email Subject Line Analyzer.Grammarly is a browser extension you can download on Google Chrome that will automatically check all of your online writing for basic spelling and grammar mistakes. When the program finds errors, it will underline them in red and provide a suggested replacement. If you want to invest a little more in your writing, there is a paid version with even more features that professional writers love.Ernest Hemmingway, the author that the app is named after, is known for writing with short, direct sentences that are very easy to read. Thus, the program will score the readability of your writing based on a number of factors, including how complicated your sentences are.Three helpful features are its “hard to read,” “simpler word,” and “passive voice” features.Hard to read looks at how long and winding your sentences are.Simpler word finds places where you are using a word or phrase that can be replaced with something more concise. The passive voice feature identifies the use of passive voice. Passive voice means that your sentence subject is a recipient of a verb's action. When writing copy, you almost always want to use active voice, where your subject acts on its verb. Active voice almost always packs a way bigger punch. You can learn a little more about passive and active voice here.Like Grammarly, Hemmingway has a paid version– their desktop app costs $20. However, the online version is free and works perfectly well.Cliche Finder does exactly what it sounds like— it finds cliches in your writing.Cliches are phrases whose meanings aren't literal. Some examples include “I lost track of time,” “don't put all of your eggs in one basket,” “time heals all wounds,” “gut-wrenching pain,” and “scared to death.”In the writing world, they are usually considered to be a huge no-no.While there is some room for cliches in casual copywriting, it is usually best to avoid using them excessively because they can make your writing more difficult to read.Headliner Analyzer works like this:You feed the program your headline. Then, they rank it out of 100. Their algorithm looks at the following (plus more):Words that make people more likely to interact with your headline.Words that make people less likely to interact with your headline.Number of words in your headline.Number of characters in your headline. The style of your headline.Reading grade level. They will also give you suggestions for improving your headline.Headline Analyzer and the next tool, Email Subject Line Analyzer, make it quite difficult to get a perfect score. I wrote a novel and the Analyzer and the SEO score was 79 so I went with it. Personally, try to aim for a score in the 60-80 range.I find that the tool is best used if you are stuck between a few different ideas and want to know which is best. It can also be fun to see the difference that small tweaks can make. Also by Coschedule, like the tool above, Email Subject Line Analyzer reviews email subject lines. It uses an algorithm similar to the Headline Analyzer, except the elements are optimized to get you the most email opens.A particularly helpful feature is that it will show you how your subject line will appear in people's inboxes.
