This week on Surviving Roots, I sit down with spiritual healer and author Lauren Courtney to explore what it really looks like to heal from the inside out. Lauren shares her journey from being a medicated teen in New York to becoming a Miami-based energy healer, sound therapist, and author of Glow Up Your Chakras. Together, we unpack the truth about healing highs, spiritual awakenings, reconnecting with your authentic self, and how grief can crack you open to your life's purpose. If you've ever wondered whether you're truly healing or just performing a new version of self-improvement — this episode is for you. We discuss: Chakras, trauma, and self-remembrance The dark side of awakening (and what comes after the “healing high”) Why you don't need crystals, ayahuasca, or a guru to start healing Moving from chaos to clarity — one choice at a time Tune in and walk away with inspiration, insight, and the reminder that your power lives in your truth. This week on Surviving Roots, I'm joined by Dr. Gertrude Lyons—master coach, podcast host, and author of Rewrite the Mother Code: From Sacrifice to Stardust. Her work is a deep call to reclaim the way we mother—not just our children, but ourselves. With features in The Guardian, Motherly, Thrive Global, Business Insider, and beyond, Dr. Lyons is leading a movement to challenge generational norms, uncover inherited beliefs, and help women rewrite the internal code we've been conditioned to live by. We talk about: The quieter symptoms of the mother wound. How generational trauma shows up in motherhood. Why “doing it all” doesn't equal doing it right. And how to reclaim joy, intuition, and enoughness in your own story. This is a powerful conversation about honesty, boundaries, identity, and breaking free from outdated definitions of caregiving. Whether you're a mother, mothering something, or reparenting yourself—you'll find a piece of yourself in this episode.
No one wants to over-stay their welcome, but it seems that frequently pastors are a little too quick to want to move on to a different pasture. The New Testament stories I reference are found in Acts 8:4-8, 26-40; 16:6-10. Send us a textIn this episode, I chat with Lucy Caldwell about contemporary Irish literature's vibrant yet complex landscape, her latest novel, These Days, and profound philosophical insights. Growing up in Belfast during the Troubles in a "mixed marriage" family—Protestant father, Catholic mother—Caldwell developed a unique perspective that informs her award-winning writing. Lucy describes writing during the pandemic and experiencing "a portal between worlds" as she researched the Blitz while living through COVID lockdowns. Lucy Caldwell was born in Belfast in 1981. She is the author of three previous novels, several stage plays and radio dramas, and three collections of short stories. She won the BBC National Short Story Award in 2021 for “All the People Were Mean and Bad.” Other awards include the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the George Devine Award, the Dylan Thomas Prize, and a Major Individual Artist Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2018, and in 2019, she was the editor of Being Various: New Irish Short Stories. In 2022, she was the recipient of the EM Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters for her body of work to date.Lucy CaldwellThese Days, Lucy CaldwellJan Carson, AuthorGlenn PatersonWendy Erskine, AuthorKerry Dougherty, AuthorSupport the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links

•Arizona Dranes Born somewhere between 1889 to 1905, no specific record of her birthdate, however she was born in Greenville, Texas to Melton & Millie Dranes. She was born blind and as a young girl she attended the Institute for Deaf, Dumb and Blind Colored Youths of the State of Texas. It was in school where Blind children were typically taught trades as that was thought to be the only means of making a living for disabled people. •Arizona began learning classical singing and piano and as attitudes began to change about the blind, early reformers raised money for the school by providing public exhibitions of blind students, demonstration they were competent and intellectual. Arizona helped set her course by the curriculum which included an emphasis on music. •Arizona's recording journey peaked in 1928 to which she recorded “Just Look” on the Okeh record label. It seems Arizona was the first woman to record gospel music. Vocally her classical training was very apparent with the “rolling ‘r's”. In parts of the song you can hear some of her classical cadence in her musical phrasing on the piano. •Here we and a truly unsung Gospel Music Pioneer in the woman Arizona Dranes. •Please send Let's Talk: Gospel Music Gold an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Fight-or-flight may be a natural response for shepherd leaders who are being bitten by sheep, but it's not the response that glorifies God, strengthens our leadership, and heals the flock. You can watch the video of my training with that group of pastors. I would like to invite you to join a cohort of pastors that will be dealing with the same painful sheep bites you have experienced. We'll meet together online every other week for 10 sessions to discuss the biblical principles that will help us all respond in the supernatural ways that strengthen our leadership, heal our flocks, and bring glory to the Chief Shepherd. This cohort is limited to just 10 pastors so that we can develop some solid friendships that will last well beyond the cohort, so please sign up today. Check out more information on my book When Sheep Bite here.
Laurens Hammond Rev. Clarence Cobbs & the 1st Church of Deliverance Laurens Hammond filed for a patent on his musical machine. After Laurens got the company up and running, Hammond's Serial Number One went to a dealer in Kansas City, where it was used for years as a traveling demonstrator. The Hammond Organ was an immediate success, and before long, Churches, Theatres and Concert halls were humming to the Model “A”‘s sound. Rev. Clarence "Preacher" Cobbs, Pastor of 1st Church of Deliverance in Chicago, Illinois wanted something different, and procured a Hammond Organ to replace the piano at the request of Kenneth Morris. Rev. Cobbs was also one of the first African-American pastors to have his own radio show. He immediately began to use the Hammond Organ on his broadcasts, and it was a hit! In 1954, Hammond introduced the organ that secured the legend, the Model B-3. Its Chorus-Vibrato and Touch-Response Percussion™ made sounds that were totally new and fresh. Gospel churches embraced the Hammond B-3 like no one else. The Ministers of Music elevated Hammond playing to a level leaving even the most proficient artists shaking their heads in disbelief. •Please send Let's Talk: Gospel Music Gold an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. •Ron Bell a singer, songwriter & musician born October 1965 was a native of Stamford, Connecticut. At an early age growing up, Ron was introduced to Church, which guided his faith and belief in the things of God. One very important teaching aspect of his childhood development he learned was about servitude. It all began with singing in the choir. Ron loved singing, being able to express himself in song. He enjoyed the feeling of being able to move and touch the lives of others with a positive uplifting word by way of song. This passion grew into who he is and where he is today. In August of 1994 he relocated to Texas. Ron presently resides in Mansfield, TX. and is a licensed ordained Elder/Minister, a Song Writer, Business Owner, and CEO of a Non-Profit Organization. •In 2012 he established Ron Bell and CM3, (Christian Ministry Music Movement) and he currently serves in the Music Department at the West Irving Church of God In Christ where Superintendent Andrew Jackson Jr., serves as local Pastor. Ron Bell and CM3 (Christian Ministry Music Movement) entered the 2024 calendar year preparing for Outreach Ministry beyond the four walls of the Church. While filling 2024 with dates focused on Evangelizing Men and Women Prisons, Rehabilitation Centers, Correctional Facilities, sowing essential necessities to the Homeless, as well as actively supporting Community events and Church services...there is still something more to come. •June 7, 2024, Ron Bell & CM3 Releases “He'll Be With You Always” •Please send Let's Talk: Gospel Music Gold an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Release a new episode. 00:00:55 And as always, we appreciate if you can give us a five star rating and leave a review without any further ado. Now let's dive into the show. Hello and welcome. Today is April 4, 2024 and spring is in the air. And you know what happened in spring. 00:01:18 It's something new, something fresh, things are developing, flowers are sprouting, and there is a new beginning. In many, many instances, we look forward to new, exciting things to come into our lives. And one of the exciting things I want to share with you today, my new book become empowered, that will be released this month. On April 24, to be precise. That book came out of a long development and working together with twelve amazing contributing authors who shared their real life story. 00:02:09 In this book, including the one that I am sharing, we have 13 empowering stories that will not only entertain, but it will also help you understand. Oh wow. I'm not alone here. It's not just me that experiencing hardship and hard times, no, many others have gone before me and have experienced that and they share how they overcame it, their share their transformations and triumphs. And we hope that by sharing those stories you will inspired. 00:02:55 So today I actually want to talk about the power of stories and I have a surprise guest today who will share her experience by writing down her story and sharing the story publicly in this book. And when I work with my clients, I cannot emphasize enough how important stories are. We as human beings are hardwired to tell stories, to listen to stories, and to learn from stories. And if you are an entrepreneur, you know when you can share your message through a powerful story, you are able to transform more lives by teaching through stories. And you will also realize that you can connect with your ideal audience in a more powerful way. 00:04:03 And you also will realize that when you can share your story more effectively, you can turn prospects into clients. And when you have more clients, when you are able to help more people, you can make a bigger impact so stories have something profound. They share an experience. And we all love a good story, either reading it in a book, listening to it on a podcast, or in an audiobook, or watch a story unfold on tv or in a movie. You see, when you understand the power of stories and when you implement that into your life, either as an entrepreneur or even in your personal life, if you have to communicate with your loved ones, with your children, with your spouse, with your friends, with your neighbors, when you know how to communicate better. 00:05:08 And sometimes incorporating a little story will help people understand you better. And that's what this podcast is about. We have to become empowered. We have to become better communicators. We have to become a better version of ourselves. 00:05:28 And the more we learn, the better we can do that. So I wanted to share the labor of love of this particular book. When I started this project, I had. An idea, I had a vision. That was it. 00:05:51 I didn't realize how much bigger this project became. First of all, the twelve other women who share together with me the stories in this book became good friends. Actually, we collaborated together through email, through zooms, and I learned their stories. And of course, me being the first one who read it was very humbling. It was a humbling experience. 00:06:31 And I realized that these women opened their heart through their stories. And especially sharing those publicly with you in this book is very powerful. And I saw that there was so much more we can learn from each other than just staying in our own circle of friends and family and circle of influence when we open up and read more, listen more, share more, we have more influence in this world. And all of us, we hope that we are able to make a difference in other people's lives, perhaps in your life, when you listen to those stories. And I personally want to invite you to of course, buy this book. 00:07:39 But first of all, become part of this experience and you can by joining our vip guest list. So you are going to be invited to a very special launch party that we have on April 24. I will have a link in the show notes that you can become part of that journey and being part of that vip guest list, you have the opportunity to get signed autographs and you will also have the opportunity to win prizes. Because of course, there are always some. Perks that will help get more people excited for this book launch. 00:08:32 Here we go. We are launching there too. But it's the book launch. Yes. English is not my first language and sometimes words are being so similar or written so similar. 00:08:44 So how is it not being pronounced? And just for your information, German in that respect is much easier. It might be harder grammatically, but reading you just read as it is written. It is pronounced as it is written. Alison, I am so glad that you joined me today because you are one of the twelve contributing authors to my book. Become empowered. Echoes of grace and strength and when I see you, Alison, you are such an example of that grace and of that strength. Well, first of all, welcome. 00:12:20 How are you today? Oh, thank you. It's lovely to be here. Yes, I'm really well and it's just all so exciting around this book. It's wonderful. 00:12:30 So thank you for having me on here today. Yes, and what I love about this book too, and about the authors is that it's really international. And for those who are listening, you could see or you could hear already an accent. Alison is originally from England, and of course, you know my accent. I'm originally from Germany. 00:12:55 And now, Alison, you live in Sweden, right? Yes, I was brought in, brought up in London, but I live just outside Stockholm now. So my, my husband is swedish. That's what took me to Sweden. So, yeah. 00:13:10 Fantastic. Fantastic. I love it. And we do have another author. She is originally from. 00:13:19 She is dutch and lives now in Spain. And we have canadian and we have authors that are originally from Colombia and I think another south american country. It's. I love it. And not only because it's so international, but also you bring your own nationality and your upbringing into your stories. 00:13:48 So those stories are just amazing. And if you all want to read them, the big book launch is on April 24. Make sure you put it into your calendar, and I will have a link below here where you can actually get. Become part of our vip guest list. So. 00:14:09 But now I want to get into asking you a couple questions. Of course, we don't want to reveal your story, but what I will do is I'm going to read the topic and also one of the highlights from your story or one of the takeaways that we highlighted here. So the topic or your title is through tears and triumph, a journey of healing and empowerment. And first of all, I want to ask you, we all have stories, but writing them down and even more, publishing it for the world to read and hear is a different story. So how was your experience in writing down the story? 00:15:07 Yeah, that's such a wonderful question because it actually surprised me how this made me felt. It really made me feel very emotional because of what my story contains. It was very emotional for me, but it was also very healing. I think it's. The details of my story are something that I don't necessarily think about because it's too painful. 00:15:37 You know, it's kind of head in the sand scenario. And, you know, if I'm being really honest, when I started writing this, you know, it brought me to tears. I really. It felt like a release in a way of, I finally, you know, putting it. There's something about putting something on paper, isn't there? 00:15:58 Rather than. Than just having thoughts or talking about it. So I found the whole experience very emotional, but also very positive because it really, it just enabled me to kind of release those emotions and all that pain and hurt that I had throughout, you know, this. This time in my life. And it is so beautiful what you said, because you are not the only one who shared this with me. 00:16:33 There was another author, Monica, writing down her story. She, she shared with me, my gosh, tears were running down my cheeks, and it was so healing. And we hope that the readers will also experience something in that respect, that they realize they're not alone. We all have painful stories, painful experiences in life, but what we do with it, that makes a big difference. How we deal with it, how we respond. 00:17:13 And many of you actually discovered your purpose in that whole story. Wasn't that for you as well, Alison? Yes, absolutely. My whole story really revolves around, you know, what happened and how that enabled me, through the pain and the hurt and the upset, to really find my purpose. If that hadn't happened in my life, then, you know, I wouldn't maybe have been drawn into what I'm doing now. 00:17:48 So. Absolutely. It's very interesting, isn't it, in life, how things that aren't necessarily, like, positive or enjoyable can lead us into something that we find our purpose in? Yes. Yes. 00:18:03 And I want to read something that you put into the story, and I basically summarize what you just said. Challenges can indeed morph into opportunities, and in the face of hardship, there lies the potential for immense growth and evolution. I love it. And that's what this is all about. So if you want to get your hand on the book, I encourage you to join us on April 24 for our official book launch. 00:18:42 And I'm going to give you a sneak peek of the book. It's not for sale yet, but that's how it's going to look like right now. It just says not for resale because this is my proofread version. And on the backside, you see all the beautiful authors, including Alison, who is there with us today. So thank you, Alison, for being here and sharing your experience of writing your story and publishing it in this book. 00:19:18 Oh, thank you so much. It's a real pleasure. And I'm so excited about this book launch. Really, really excited. If people that are in your universe, they're in Europe, want to hear more about it, where can they find you? 00:19:33 Like on social media or maybe in any other means? The best? Well, I'm on all social media. If you search for Alison Bladh, that's Bladh a l I s o n b l a D h, or you can find me on my website, which is the same Alisonblard.com. And there's lots of information, and I will be posting lots of things about the book launch as well. 00:20:01 So perfect. Yes, I'll make sure to put that information in the show notes as well. So if people directly want to talk to you, because, you know, sometimes you want to have that direct conversation with the authors. But of course, on the 24th, we are going to have a lot of presence online and we also have a Facebook group that you can join and that Facebook group called Become Empowered. And again, the link will be in the show notes. 00:20:41 So thank you, Alison. Oh, thank you so much. Thank you. I hope you enjoyed that little inside view from one of our authors. And over the next few weeks, I will get more authors onto our stream. 00:21:00 I will have live streams and I have a Facebook group that you can join right now. You stay in touch, you can be part of the launch, you can be part of winning prizes. Just go to Facebook, become empowered and join the group to stay updated and to get the insights. And of course, if you want to be part of our vip guest list, then I invite you to join by clicking the link below.
