What can you do about mental health in your workplace?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2019 9:47

What can you do about mental health in your workplace?Mental ill-health could be one of the biggest issues to face businesses today, therefore promoting positive mental health is very important. one in four people in the UK will experience some kind of mental health issue over the course of any given year.Leaders are not exempt from MH -At LAMBERT, we have found, that its not just employees that are struggling, it is the business leaders too -therefore our programs help employers support themselves and their employees too.A study by BUPA (2018) confirmed that 68% of business owners themselves suffer from mental ill health. As such, at LAMBERT we encourage leaders to address their own wellbeing as we help their employees i.e. we have them participate in the program too and get them to put in place clear policies and processes to support their whole org.A ‘Mind study’ found that 56% of employers said they would like to do more to improve staff wellbeing, but don't feel they have the right training or guidance. This is why we do what we do.‘Culture of fear’ -Similarly, the research undertaken by ‘MIND’ confirmed how a ‘culture of fear’ and silence around mental health is very costly to employers:· More than one in five (21 per cent), when asked how workplace stress had affected them agreed that they had called in sick to avoid work· 42 per cent had considered resigning when asked how workplace stress had affected them and 14 per cent stated that they had already resigned· sadly 30 per cent of staff said that they would not feel able to talk openly with their line manager if they were feeling stressed’‘Culture of silence’ -To help everyone achieve their full potential within an organisation, there are certain areas that need to be addressed -especially around the link of mental ill health and career progression. As this could be contributing to a ‘culture of silence’ -around mental ill health itself.Equality -So, there’s currently no discrimintation against age/gender/ethnicity/disability/sexual orientation but this needs to be the case for mental health history too. Throughout our wellness programs, we assess employees, and often find that their perceptions of unequal access to career progression opportunities were attributed to mental health -and likewise this affected their chance of being selected for a job.Based on everything iv’e just previously mentioned, employers are now realising that they ‘need to do more’ to promote a mentally healthy workplace, because even if you don’t struggle with mental ill health personally, you’ll likely know at least one person who will. The no’s are high -& climbing. When we implement wellness programs for organisations, we find that those struggling with mental ill health is mainly due to BOTH a ‘personal’ and a ‘professional’ standpoint. That’s why our work-life programs are so successful, and creating awareness is key -but there is always more that can be done. That’s why we get businesses to put support mechanisms in place to help, so that they can promote mentally healthy workplaces.Advances in technology (create a balance with mental health at work and at home) -It’s no surprise that we are an ‘always on’ culture, and as easy as it is to say ‘have a good work-life balance’ – it is harder to achieve AND ‘more than ever before’. This all has an impact on wellbeing and mental health. So, where you wud implement a nutritional detox, a digital detox is just as important -but perhaps on a more regular basis. For e.g. having a ‘no phone Friday’ or for banning the whole org from accessing work emails after working hours or during the weekend etc. What do you do now ref tech? Most of us juggle family and other commitments on an evening and at the weekend, so grounding yourself with them is key to optimal WB - except that work-life balance means different things to each person. How do you look after your business AND your employees? -If you are struggling with mental ill health, you need to reach out because mental health is an essential aspect of overall wellness, a vital pillar. It must be looked after, but the most common mistake/downfall is people being afraid to ask for help. LAMBERT puts the business AND employee needs at the heart of our programs. The issue of MH is almost always linked to work i.e. either directly causing it, or because employees feel it is impacting upon their performance – communication is key - so talking to each other is a must (talking things through with managers or HR can help) – LAMBERT helps businesses to put steps in place for support purposes.Preventing things escalating is of paramount importance – do you have a plan in your org to tackle MH issues? We should all be aware of the wellbeing of those around us -full stop.Listening to your colleagues, friends and family - asking them how they are but just listen to what they ‘actually’ say. As a leader, raising awareness of the resources and information that’s available is key, and signposting them to specific advice is a business priority. From researching our own programs, we make sure that business leaders have the knowledge they need, so they can drive ‘change’ in this area. Most business leaders’ goals are to drive productivity, but they need to have a mentally healthy workforce to achieve this. So, what can your organisation do to facilitate a mentally healthy workplace?

Physical wellbeing can often bring about unnecessary pain and discomfort - avoid all the pitfalls with these tips.

Tips to avoid any unwanted set backs!Workplace wellness programs can often be the catalyst towards better health, however occasionally individuals can do too much too soon. Here are a few quick tips to avoid injury, even if you are a frequent gym goer -not just for those starting out. Preventing injuries at all costsMost sporting injuries occur to ligaments, tendons and muscles, with only about 5% of sports injuries involving broken bones. Most frequent sports injuries are sprains (injuries to ligaments) and strains (injuries to muscles) caused when an abnormal stress is placed on tendons, joints, bones and muscle. Ways to reduce injury:• Wear the right equipment - Comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear;• Increase flexibility - Stretching exercises before and after exercise; • Strengthen muscles – Adding resistance exercises to your workouts; • Use the correct technique- This should be reinforced during the initial stages; • Take breaks – Certain rest periods can reduce injuries and prevent heat illness;• Stop your workout - If there is sharp pain or a pain that is getting worse with your activity.• Avoid heat injury - By drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise. Decrease or stop during high heat/humidity periods and prevent heat injury by wearing lighter clothing.

How to improve the physical environment in your workplace?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2019 5:08

What does your physical environment look like?Analysis of your physical environment -In short your company culture needs to show the following: You need to show that you are providing ‘up to date information’ about physical activity, and sending out active messages to your workforce? So Let us know -What exercise / P.A messages and information you are supplying to your workforce? For e.g. are you providing prompts to promote physical activity near stairwells or elevators etc? Are you planning to provide or support physical activities (competitive and non-competitive), that help develop the skills needed to participate in physical activities? Similarly, how you are encouraging physically active behaviours? for example: Discouraging watching TV on breaks and/or discouraging sitting for long periods of time. Let us know how you are providing your workforce with adequate breaks DURING working hours, AND encouraging them to be active during those breaks? If not, will you allow employees to be able to use physical activity facilities outside of work hours? AND IF THIS IS THE CASE what incentives are you offering, for engaging in physical activity (e.g., merchandise, coupons or cash)? Will you offer incentive-based programs to encourage activity (e.g., pedometer walking campaigns) etc? Instead of having sit-down meetings, how is your company allowing for walk and-talk meetings to encourage such physical activity? IMPORTANT -What do you provide by way of ‘flexible scheduling’, so your whole workforce/employees can make time for exercise? If you provide an on-site exercise facility, what does it include i.e. classes such as aerobics, kickboxing, yoga, etc? If so, do you provide on-site childcare coverage to facilitate physical activity participation? If not, are you planning to support local fitness centres and provide free, discounted or subsidised memberships to your employees? Or similarly will you offer them company-sponsored fitness programs or clubs? What effort you are making to map out ‘on-site’ or ‘nearby walking trails?’ And how are you encouraging employees to map their own biking or walking routes to and from work i.e. by way of support are you going to provide bike racks in safe and convenient locations, and/or are you providing showers or changing facilities for them?

How to overcome low participation rates in your wellness program?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2019 5:57

How to overcome low participation, low engagement, low morale and general dissatisfaction. It is not uncommon for such organisations wellness programs to struggle with: 1) low participation 2) constantly experiencing low engagement 3) low morale and general dissatisfaction. “IMPORTANT-Keeping your expectations to realistic levels”  Our programs are ‘not off the shelf’, they are designed specifically for your org -however all ‘similar’ wellness programs that LAMBERT has helped org’s to plan/design/execute and sustain would have been tested with many different types of organisations. Communication between the whole workforce is of paramount importance, which always leads to participants having positive experiences. A bridge will always need to be built between management and employees -which helps to create an understanding of the big picture.  Employee engagement has to be maintained, which ultimately helps to improve individual/group/organisational morale and helps sustain the quality of the program.  Program results will depend on the interventions planned, but management and front line staff must work together to ensure participation is monitored regularly towards sustained results. As a whole organisation, your management and workforce will collectively all form new ideas -to solve problems that may be faced and move forward in a positive manner. Committment during the first two months (in preparation for a future program start date)TO DO:  Allocate key members of your organisation to form a wellness team/ committee to meet frequently -this time for meetings can taper off to monthly later.  Once the program has been established, the time to facilitate such team/committee meetings should be approx 10 hours/month. Plan for unforeseen eventualities- that if key people should leave (rotated system in place) Providing they have the right skill set, existing program managers can be trained to facilitate such meetings.  similarly, always look towards building: a) involvement b) participation and c) keeping commitment, morale and engagement high. The No 1 aim- is to get to the root cause of the business and individual employee concerns, keep expectations low and implement solutions to your needs gradually i.e. over time not all at once. that are proposed. Keep all channels of communitaion open, listen to the proposed ideas but more importantly -regularly providing feedback to ensure the program remains a solution-based strategy. Continuously work as a team to address all concerns and suggestions towards sustainable success.  Management can partake in LAMBERTS leadership program, which will provide them with the skills towards fostering positive relations with the employee participants. Plan – an option is to trial your first wellness program with a single dept i.e. like a pilot study - just to see if the program is a comfortable fit with your organisation.

How to overcome management concerns, about starting a wellness program?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 4, 2019 4:12

Pre-empting Management ConcernsThere are often common concerns from management, regarding the implementation of a wellness program -so we need to address these areas before continuing. “All content shared with you today is purely for the program to be effective enough for long-term success” If the process of program implementation is followed to the letter, it is very likely to be satisfactory to all participants. However, the key point is having a supportive management - and if this structure is in place and works -so will the program. So, how do you plan for better participation rates/and interest with your wellness program? Firstly, you must create solutions for every single employees’ needs, therefore the process should be designed and customised to your organisation as a whole. Secondly, ensure that a budget is consistently available and set aside/readily available for your wellness program. But WHY is this?As you may or may not be aware, hhealthcare costs continue to explode out of control, as does worker compensation costs, etc etc. BUT Health IS wealth, so no budget should be restricted in this area……..Another important point: Your organisation can start testing the program without much cost at all, by implementing certain parts of it first. So start thinking about: bridging the gap between both the business needs and the needs of each individual employee -this is the key to success. It is also important to note that the cost of doing nothing is more expensive, and if a wellness program has previously been half-heartedly implemented -then such organisations always pay the price for such acts of cutting corners.

Fellow business owners, how do you help your own wellbeing? Since starting my business in 2014 there have been the obvious stressors that come with the launch and getting going. Similarly, my father took ill and then sadly past away and for the best part of 2 years led me down the depression rabbit hole. Until recently my mental and physical health deteriorated due to both of the above factors - but found a way out.My religious routine is to walk daily, stand up regularly whilst working at my desk and complete a 40-60min workout at least 4x per week.

How to improve engagement in your workplace? | Health and business alignment strategy

Employers are now realising that the surest route to driving engagement is to invest in their employees, with a growing awareness from the C-suite that investment in workplace wellness can be the key to turning disengaged, disinterested employees into productive, focused brand champions committed to their organisation. LAMBERT seeks out and embraces what drives a business, and aligns employee health with bottom-line performance. Imagine being in a different country, unable to speak the local language - yet you feel pressurised to deliver a programme that you have been employed to do. You are alone, you feel vulnerable, but you must get results - otherwise you will be returning home on the next flight home having failed. How do you even start to engage? We believe in the need to continually articulate, promote, and refine the value proposition(s) for worksite health that are applicable to specific organisation’s and their unique business needs. Given the alarming chronic disease trends throughout the world LAMBERT has set out to investigate and learn from organisation’s that have successfully developed and implemented global strategies for health promotion and optimum wellness. Beyond our specialisation in corporate wellness, we continuously demonstrate an unwavering passion and belief in the role that wellbeing plays in modern society. We have an innate ability to spark large-scale change within organisations; becoming a catalyst for companies and individuals to understand their symbiotic relationship between each other and the environment in which they live and work. Focusing on Value On Investment (VOI), more so than ROI On a global level, employers now understand the need to offer wellness programmes with their employees in mind, but LAMBERT does not deploy wellness programmes as a cost control tactic for fear of missing the much greater potential benefit of improving organisational performance. We approach health promotion differently, and as such educate employers on how to be truly dedicated to creating a healthy, high-performing workforce rather than just being bent on cost control. Our global methodology focuses on reducing employee absence and presenteeism, boosting workforce morale and engagement, and in certain workplaces improving workplace safety. At LAMBERT we created an employee health management initiative that was effective and easy to manage, an initiative that marked a transition towards a more strategic and comprehensive wellness programme. Our health management initiative is designed to help employees and their families become aware of their health status, by providing tools to maintain and improve their health, and educate them on how to be engaged consumers of health care.

Value on Investment (VOI) and Value of Expectation (VOE), rather than Return on Investment (ROI)

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2019 3:24

Just one of our differences is how we get Business owners to focus on Value of Investment (VOI) and Value-of Expectations (VOE).On a global level, employers now understand the need to offer Wellbeing (WB) prog’s with their employees in mind. LAMBERT tries not to deploy WB prog’s as a cost control tactic for fear of missing the much greater potential benefit of improving organisational performance. LAMBERT approaches health promotion differently, and as such educates employers on how to be truly dedicated to creating a healthy, high-performing workforce rather than just being bent on cost control. With ROI there are too many variables that we should consider instead. As suggested by the Institute for Health and Productivity Studies (2015), many benefits of workplace health promotion prog’s cannot be quantified, and therefore may not show up in ROI estimates. Galbreath, (2011), cited by Harder et al (2014) agree and claim org’s that take a cost-analysis approach to worksite health promotion are at risk of entering an inescapable cycle of ill-health within the workplace. LAMBERT shares a great case study with you today, about one of our clients journey -from an avid 10km runner towards a world championships. An amazing story summarised for you, a client that wanted general weight loss tips i.e. how best to reduce sugar in his diet etc to how best to add protein into his diet to support his gains. Similarly, he was not exempt from injury either, as he picked up a calf injury from running too much and not strengthening enough -and had a long standing back injury to contend with. His biggest barrier was his workload, due to him being a high-end businessman working long hours -a common theme in the corporate world.

What is wellness? | Addressing the confusion

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 27, 2019 6:21

There's so many different meanings of the word wellness or wellbeing, for example in 2015 I started as a mature student started a master's in health and well-being and one thing that was very clear was that the room full of students all mature students, but on speaking to other people afterwards of younger ages - no one could really define the word wellness or well-being for that matter. No-one had the same view of it and in some cases when you're in workplace well-being industry that's not that could be a problem so if you've got if you're a business owner and you've got employees that don't really understand how to look after their wellness or how being-well can make them perform better and/or you as the business owner depending on your knowledge of it you may or may or may not know how it can benefit you as a company - and also a lot of workplace wellbeing companies / consultants etc promote wellness well-being in different ways to each other - so why is that? Ultimately, there's different columns of wellness there's psychological wellbeing /physical well-being / mental well-being spiritual well-being / intellectual well-being / environmental well-being social well-being, and some companies will use some of those some companies will use all of those and there's financial well-being as well and they all affect people in different ways every single aspect. Some of them on one day some another, and so it's all interchangeable and it's that it's a moving problem. So one employee could come to work some suffering or struggling with one area wellness and the next day be fine and then a couple of weeks later could be struggling with another - so you can see where I'm going with this in the respect there you know certainly the way LAMBERT does business with our workplace wellness programs is we help people every single day, every single week, every single month, every single year throughout - while ever they are employed with the companies that they work with we help them and we and that ultimately has a knock-on effect for their productivity, return on investment for business owners etc etc it's this snowball effect and ultimately if the employee knows that, knows that the business owner (the boss) is looking after their wellness / their well-being it's a win-win but ultimately the program has to be structured in a way that each and every individual employee can be looked after and supported in every way that they need. It's no mean task, but it has to be that way because in wellness there's so many moving parts So that's what I wanted to cover in this particular video, ultimately it's rich content to just give you an idea of how we work and to just throw it out there about the struggles of workplace wellness programs in some cases / in many cases the reasons why some of them don't work because certain aspects are not looked at etc etc. Just interact with us, and let us know if you've tried any workplace wellness programs before, if you've struggled to implement some of them or just what your thoughts are of them know do you feel that they have worked for you in one area not worked for you in the other - and maybe it's because of what I've just been mentioned in this video? Either way we look forward to hearing from you and getting started with you in the futureTake care

The secret to building healthier and happier workplaces | Improving your corporate culture

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 27, 2019 6:27

As a business owner, you personally could be against change related to implementing a workplace-wellness-program, and your employees may be seriously against change as well. Let's face it, not many people like change. However, i want to explain to you an experience that I had in a certain region of the world (I'm not going to name that place) however you know it's very difficult. I was on my own as a consultant advising senior high level personnel, and ultimately there were many many stakeholders involved, so change from the top all the way down the chain to the bottom - the person at the bottom is ultimately the employee. There was a lot of friction along the way, so it was an uphill battle but I / we collectively had a lot of success. It took a lot of immersion, integration, teamwork and trust because we had to get the backing from leadership. If leadership was against change then that struggle was even more amplified to get the end goal so we had many many uphill battles and that's sometimes what you need for success - it's not always going to be clear-cut. Workplace wellness programs are not off the shelf, and they have to relate to the internal culture AND the external culture as well. You have to bear in mind the environment your'e working in AND the internal environment of the mind of every single participant that you wish to implement the plan for. You have to notice that at all levels there's so many different types of leadership as well - all the way to the top. Similarly, even if you've got the the say so, the go-ahead from the top level (which fortunately we did out there - from most levels) there it's still a struggle with implementation. It's so easy to say yes the top leadership want this change, but in reality, as you start filtering that information down you will still come up against barriers but we always managed to get success in the end. So if you're a business owner let us know ''if you've tried to implement a program before?''''What experiences you've had with wellness?'' and let us know ''How do you perceive your workplace culture to be at this moment in time?'' ''Have you done a needs analysis, if so is there a big gap between what you want as the business owner and what the employees want?'' ''Have you done that analysis?'' LAMBERT Wellbeing can do that for your company, but ultimately these videos are to give you pointers in how you can implement changes and the struggles you may come up against. This video was recorded to specifically share with you about culture change, so to summarise change is one thing, culture is another...and to combine the two there may be problems along the way. Success is possible, but with a lot of chipping away but success can be found. There are so many workplace wellness programs out there that try and implement culture change, without really realising that culture change is two separate things changes. So if you've tried to implement a workplace wellness program before, this may have been the problem. Ultimately the way you make changes has to complement your business, and also the employees themselves. If you can interact with us, and let us know if you've tried anything before that would be great, and we can communicate with you in the comments below or on any of our platforms at LAMBERT Wellbeing. We look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck.
