On January 8, 2011, the Arizona congresswoman was shot in the head at pointblank range when an assailant opened fire during a constituent event outside a grocery store in Tucson. The first episode of Medical Rehab Matters addresses stroke and inpatient medical rehabilitation. Stroke impacts approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. each year and more than two-thirds of them receive inpatient rehabilitation services after they're released from the hospital. Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability and the fourth leading cause of death. About one quarter of inpatient medical rehabilitation patients are there because of a stroke.
