The notion of equitable public health seeks to address health disparities and social determinants of health that affect an individual's ability to achieve optimal health. While public health inequities are not a new concept, research in recent years has revealed how a community's demographics and surrounding environmental conditions impact residents' quality of life and actual life expectancies. Health equity requires dismantling systems that lead to inequalities and providing additional resources to underserved communities. Currently, equitable public health is a goal that many are working towards, with physicians such as Dr. David Margolius striving to make it a reality.rnrnDr. David Margolius was appointed as Director of Public Health for the City of Cleveland in 2022. Prior to that, he served as the Division Director of General Internal Medicine at MetroHealth. From the moment he arrived in Cleveland, Dr. Akram Boutros' visionary thinking has inspired MetroHealth to elevate medical care by providing and integrating social services to build equity, promote justice, and improve the health of people and communities. With the 2019 creation of the Institute for H.O.P.E.™ (Health, Opportunity, Partnership, and Empowerment), MetroHealth is connecting patients and neighbors to fresh food, stable housing, education, career training, and other services that keep them healthy. Dr. Boutros paired that work with a $1 billion reimagination of the system's main campus on West 25th Street. The new MetroHealth Glick Center, which opens in October 2022 and will be the first hospital in a park in the country, has sparked the rebirth of the surrounding neighborhood while preserving its Hispanic culture. Dr. Boutros' focus on inclusion, diversity, and equity is just as significant. In 2020, 39% of MetroHealth's new hires were racially or ethnically diverse.Under his leadership, MetroHealth has grown to more than 20 community health centers, four hospitals, five MetroExpressCare locations, and ten pharmacies. Those are in addition to MetroHealth's main-campus medical center, which is home to the area's most experienced Level I Adult Trauma Center, Ohio's only Ebola Treatment Center, and the only adult and pediatric trauma and burn center in the state.MetroHealth's annual revenue grew from $785 million to more than $1.5 billion during his tenure. MetroHealth now treats more than 300,000 patients at more than 1.4 million visits annually. Since 2013, the health system has created more than 1,800 new jobs, sent doctors into more than a dozen local schools, and received the largest donation in its history – $42 million from JoAnn and Bob Glick. A Quote From This Episode"You only have to lead from a place of love. Leaders don't lead organizations; they lead other people. And if you don't truly love the people you work with and who put the time in to support the organization's goals, you're not going to fare very well."Resources Mentioned In This EpisodeMetroHealth Video Campaign - Healing Begins With ListeningDwight LeeLisa RamirezMary Massie-StoryJohn Hariston Jr.Leadership and Self Deception by the Arbinger InstituteAbout The International Leadership Association (ILA)The ILA was created in 1999 to bring together professionals with a keen interest in the study, practice, and teaching of leadership. Recently I moderated a panel with Cleveland Area Healthcare leaders and Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, representing Ohio's 9th Congressional District, to discuss constricted access to social services. The virtual event was hosted by CareAdvisors, a healthcare technology firm. They had recently done a survey of Greater Cleveland social workers to determine what needs had changed because of the pandemic, and more importantly, what are their clients saying are their biggest concerns. The responses were eye opening. Panelists included; Terrance “Terry” Byrne, MBA, MJ, FACHE, vice president of Health Center Operations, at Neighborhood Family Practice Community Health Centers; Dr. Patricia Lyons, PhD, LISW-S, owner of Lyons Counseling and Consultation Services, president of the Columbus Association of Black Social Workers, and director of the Molina Healthcare Social Determinants of Health Innovation Center; Dr. Michelle Medina, MD, FAAP, associate chief of population health at Cleveland Clinic; Margaret Mitchell, president and cEO, YWCA Greater Cleveland; Dr. Adam T. Perzynski, PhD, associate professor of medicine and sociology, MetroHealth and Case Western Reserve University; and Lisa S. Weitzman, MSSA, LISW-S, ASW-G, C-ASWCM, WeCare manager of business development, at the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging. During the roundtable, panelists discussed lessons learned and innovative ways that their organizations have increased services and shared resources. Specifically, they tackled issues of vaccine hesitancy, food insecurity, health disparities, how to incorporate social determinants of health into their delivery systems, the shift in priorities due the COVID-19, and the impact of the digital divide for aging and other vulnerable communities.
