The beautiful thing about recovery is that it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each individual has their own unique journey and different strategies that work for them. The key to long-term success, though, lies in embracing a variety of tools and methods, allowing you to find what resonates most and keeps you moving forward. In this conversation, Gust Host, Jamie Demeris and returning guest, Glenn Carosella, discuss the importance of understanding the deeper perspective behind your “why” and the inner-work it takes to find systems that work best for you. They also discuss the notion behind the biological understanding of addiction and why you have to keep doing the work to overcome the negative pathways. Curious to learn more about our guest? Glenn Carosella, LCDC, holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. He is currently serving as an Outpatient Affiliate Manager in Katy, TX, and is an adjunct faculty member at Lee College. With a diverse background in addiction treatment, Glenn has held roles as a Recovery Advocate, Director, and Inpatient Counselor, bringing a wealth of experience to his work. He recently celebrated six years in long-term recovery on September 13th. As a passionate educator, Glenn has also contributed to the field as a former educator with the University of Houston Charter School and has presented at key industry events, including the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals (TAAP) luncheon in Houston and the Houston Employee Assistance Professionals Association. He has made his second appearance on the Positive Recovery MD podcast, sharing insights from his personal and professional journey in recovery. Topics Discussed: Why you can't “outthink” addiction (but you can change your behavior) How to navigate triggers, boredom, cravings, & distractions Finding what fulfills your sense of meaning and purpose The process behind building an intentional foundation in recovery Getting reacquainted with your inner child Identifying authenticity and uncovering who you are Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverymd/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/positiverecoverymd/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links: Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers' Positive Recovery Daily Guide? It seems like every family has been affected by substance abuse in some capacity. For many of us, it's a parent, spouse, child, or even a friend who has suffered from drug or alcohol addiction. Seeing firsthand the effects of addiction, though, often encourages us to help our loved ones be a guiding light for those lost in the darkness of addiction. Recovery advocacy is about being the voice for those who can't speak for themselves. And this is precisely what led our guests to dedicate a lifetime to fighting for the policies that ensure everyone has access to the proper treatment they need. Sherri Layton, LCDC, CCS, AADC, began working in addiction treatment in 1977. Sherri didn't initially set out to pursue recovery advocacy as her lifetime passion. But when she landed her summer job at the Houston International Hospital working on the drugs and alcohol substance unit, she instantly knew she wanted to make a difference in people's lives. In 1992, Sherri began working for La Hacienda Treatment Center. Now, she is semi-retired, acting as the coordinator for La Hacienda's advocacy efforts, and is a powerhouse regarding recovery advice. She serves both statewide and nationally as Director of Public Policy and is Co-Chair of NAADAC's Public Policy Committee. She also serves on NAATP's Public Policy Committee and is on the Board of Directors for Texas' Association of Substance Abuse Programs. In this conversation, Sherri and George Joseph discuss the importance of advocacy in addiction recovery, including the impact of laws like the federal parity law, the value of building relationships with legislators, and bridging the gap for new advocates and counselors. They both offer actionable insights for those interested in becoming addiction counselors or getting involved in advocacy, ultimately aiming to inspire more professionals to join and support the cause. When it comes to addiction, it's important to remember that it is a family disease. When one person in the family struggles with addiction, it impacts everyone - the turmoil, pain, and confusion it brings ripple through every relationship, leaving no parent, sibling, or spouse unmarked. There is good news, however - Families can and do heal together. If you have a loved one who is struggling with addiction, you may find yourself asking the question, “How can I navigate this tumultuous journey without falling into the trap of enabling my loved one?” The importance of family involvement in the recovery process cannot be overstated. When families commit to healing together, they can break the cycles of pain and rebuild trust and connection. In this podcast takeover, Julie DeNofa, President of Positive Recovery Centers, and Colleen Hargrove, LCDC, Outpatient Manager at PRC—Round Rock, discuss the various family roles in addiction and how to support your loved ones on their journey to recovery. Be sure to tune in as Julie and Colleen explore the delicate balance between providing support for recovery and enabling addiction, offering practical tips and real-life examples of families who have successfully navigated this path. It's part of a €2.9 million allocation from the Department of Rural and Community Development aimed at supporting the staffing of Local Community Development Committees. Clare LCDC Chairperson and Independent Shannon Councillor Gerry Flynn says while the funding is welcome, people in this county need to see enhanced services in their communities.

In this episode, Joe interviews Christine Calvert: Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and certified Holotropic Breathwork® facilitator. She talks about how addiction led her to breathwork, how breathwork has helped her over the years, how breathwork can be a compliment to other self-work, and how becoming comfortable with breathwork first could be a very important stepping stone towards better understanding the psychedelic experience. She talks about how years of breathwork helped her navigate complicated states of consciousness, and the incredible benefit of learning to trust our body's capacity to heal itself. She discusses using bodywork in sessions and the importance of having the experiencer be the one who requests it; how much a facilitator's past relationship with touch affects how they use touch; the risk in meditation vs. the safety of breathwork; the concept of learning self-awareness; how profound it is to be witnessed in breathwork's dyad model; and why researching and creating guidelines for this kind of work seems impossible. By nature, sex is one of the most serious and delicate conversations a therapist can have with their patient. When they're possibly experiencing sex addiction, the challenge only increases. From its roots in intimacy disorder to the modern problem of near-unrestrained access to pornography, a sex addiction diagnosis can be a challenging conclusion for both patient and clinician to arrive at.Joined by Menninger Clinic behavioral addictions specialist Dalanna Burris, LPC, LCDC, SCAT, hosts Dr. Kerry Horrell and Dr. Bob Boland dive into this episode of Mind Dive podcast to explore various facets of sex addiction. Listen to hear the complexities of sex addiction's ties to other issues such as religious shame and substance abuse. Also hear about how clinicians can best approach one of the most delicate subjects in psychology.“A key part of treating our patients is checking ourselves at the door and being able to separate from our morality or what we may believe is right or wrong,” said Burris. “When approaching the topic of sex, we must sit with someone without judgement because they'll be able to feel it in the treatment, regardless of what you say. If you're able to have this conversation and be open, it can be a great relief for your patient.”Follow The Menninger Clinic on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to never miss an episode of Mind Dive.Visit www.menningerclinic.org to learn more about The Menninger Clinic's research and leadership roles in mental health.Listen to Episode 15: Informatics and Patient Privacy with Dr. John Torous

This week, Dr. Jason Powers and Julie DeNofa are joined by Joseph Gorordo. Joseph is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor who has been in substance abuse treatment since 2009. In long-term recovery since 2008, Joseph is also the Vice President of Business Development for Recovery Unplugged, Former President of the Austin Chapter of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, and current President-Elect for that same organization. In 2019, Joseph was awarded the Terry D. Hale Professional of the Year award and has built and developed various programs, including Residential Treatment, Intensive Outpatient Programs, and Extended Care Programs. Joseph also co-hosts the Talksicology Podcast, a weekly live discussion on mental health, addiction, and recovery. During their conversation, Joseph shares how he never felt like he fit in growing up, leading to experimenting with drugs and alcohol. However, drugs and alcohol quickly became his identity and consumed his life. After years of justifying his addiction, stealing money from his mom to pay for drugs, and trying to live up to the facade of living a rockstar movie lifestyle, Joseph knew he needed to make a change. In long-term recovery, Joseph now creates opportunities for others to find their way back. He recognizes how helpless many families feel when witnessing their loved ones struggling with addiction and provides resources to help them on their road to recovery. Joseph says the greatest thing recovery ever gave him was a loving family. By assisting individuals with their addictions, he can extend that same love and gratitude. Topics Discussed: Great lengths families often go to help loved ones facing addiction Why a strong community is essential to our recovery journey Learning to forgive others by learning to forgive yourself Why living a double life catches up with us when battling addiction The greatest gift recovery can give us Connect with Joseph Gorordo, LCDC: Website: https://www.recoveryunplugged.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joseph.gorordo Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/austinsoberdad/ Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/422YfzhbHRBMiKJXfs1uva Connect with Positive Recovery Centers: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/positiverecoverycenters/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Contact Positive Recovery Centers: If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment.
