(Rediffusion du 21/08/2025) Chantal Pichon est née et a grandi à Madagascar. À 17 ans, cette bachelière brillante quitte le nid familial pour poursuivre ses études dans l'Hexagone, à Marseille. Ses parents sont tous les deux médecins, et elle devait suivre leurs traces, mais une autre voie s'ouvre à elle. « Au départ, je voulais être chirurgienne, raconte Chantal Pichon en souriant, C'était mon rêve. À vrai dire, celui de mon père. Et puis, après, je me suis dit que si je ne suis pas médecin, je peux devenir chercheur en biologie, comme ça je me rapproche de la médecine. Je ne soignerai pas, mais je développerai des nouvelles thérapies. » L'ARN messager n'a plus aucun secret pour elle Son nom et son visage sont associés depuis peu de temps à l'ARN messager, découvert par le grand public lors de la pandémie du Covid-19 et ensuite lors de la vaccination. Elle est en la matière une véritable pionnière : cela fait plus de 20 ans qu'elle travaille pour plusieurs laboratoires sur cette technologie. Titulaire d'une chaire d'innovation à l'Institut universitaire de France, cette chercheuse est reconnue mondialement. Pourtant, on ne sait presque rien d'elle. Dans le cadre de la stratégie d'accélération France mise en place par le président Emmanuel Macron, elle dirige un gros projet sur la mise au point de nouveaux vaccins. « J'ai des projets européens pour essayer de trouver des moyens pour réduire le coût des ARN messagers, explique-t-elle, comme je viens de Madagascar, un pays pauvre, ce qui me guide, c'est d'arriver à placer une petite brique à mon niveau pour justement développer de nouvelles thérapies pour le plus grand nombre. Car c'est très bien de développer des nouvelles thérapies, mais si c'est juste pour des pays développés, et si c'est réservé à des personnes qui ont de l'argent, eh bien, je trouve cela un peu dommage ». Un parcours pas toujours simple Chantal Pichon a déjà été confrontée au racisme en France. « J'étais candidate pour piloter une école, le profil me correspondait. La directrice était présente, elle m'a regardée et m'a dit : « Êtes-vous sûr que vous pouvez vraiment représenter cette école comme vous êtes là ? Cette phrase m'a véritablement blessée. Je pense que si on ne réussit pas, tout le monde vous accepte et quelque part, vous êtes à votre place. Mais lorsqu'on commence à réussir, cela agace. Il y a de la jalousie, mais je pense que cela concerne tout le monde ». Pantalon fluide couleur kaki ou noir, agrémenté d'un pendentif. Chantal Pichon, élégante et souriante, déambule dans ce laboratoire flambant neuf implanté par l'Inserm, organisme de recherche public français. « Je suis excessivement fière et reconnaissante vis-à-vis de l'Inserm, je veux rendre à la société ce que j'ai eu. J'ai l'habitude de dire à mes étudiants que quand on veut réussir, on peut. En fait, quand les gens vous font confiance, ils vous proposent des moyens humains, des moyens financiers, des équipements. Et puis quand plusieurs collègues vous font confiance pour mener des projets avec eux, eh bien cela vous donne aussi énormément de responsabilités. J'ai beaucoup de pression, j'espère vraiment réussir. » À 60 ans, cette femme passionnée et impatiente a un rêve. Avec sa jeune équipe d'une quarantaine de personnes, qui regroupe plusieurs nationalités, elle met en place les vaccins et les thérapies innovantes à partir de l'ARN messager, une technologie qui pourrait être utilisée notamment dans le traitement de certains cancers.
